I love all three of these Goddesses, Glory/Illyria tie for my faves though. Jasmine is pretty cool, but very passive until she throws a truck at Angel LOL

If these gals faced off, who do you think would win?

I personally think it would be Illyria. Any thoughts?

It's really difficult to pick who would win. It all depends on what powers they can use.

Before Illyria's powers were stripped by the Mutari generator she was probably the strongest. But afterwards, Hamilton is able to beat her easily.

Jasmine seems to be less strong physically, but if she could successfully use her hypnosis powers, she could have an army at her disposal. Also, that fact that only Connor and Cordelia are capable of harming her works in her advantage.

I guess Glory would physically be the strongest, as it took the most strength to defeat her. She does not have the tactical advantage of any special powers, except for brain-sucking, which I'm not sure would work on Jasmine and Illyria.

All-in-all, I think it's impossible to determine who would be the winner.

Illyria with her powers should win i think, although we never knew exactly how strong glory would be if she hadn't been imprisoned in the body of ben, if in her own body she might be even more powerful than illyria

True. So I was never clear...was Illyria a Goddess or demon?? I guess Illyria or Glory in their true form could have stomped Jasmine where she stood.

You can't guess anything.

You have no idea what powers Jasmine would have had as a Power that Be, you can only judge on the powers that they showed on the show.

If we take Lorne and Angel as examples of Demons, its safe to assume she could wield power over all demons(if we also take into account the spider demon things) which then opens up the possibility she would have power over Illy and Glory. If that is the case, she may have been able to kill them easily, or even have them kill themselves.

Illyria was defeated by Hamilton(and one assumes Drogyn would have been there too) but we don't know how powerful he was. He had the power of the SP's in his blood, so does that mean he defeated Illy because she was weak or because the SP's are alot stronger?

Glory was in a weakened state by her Ben connection and over doing it brought out Ben which was a massive weakness as he was only human. She was strong and fast though so that made up for it.

These all seemed like very strong, formidible and intelligent fighters so there is only one thing that would determine who would win a fight - luck.

Ohh and Illy was a God-King. Basically she ruled, most 'God' like demons ruled domains, but we take from her that she ruled them.
Though we can never be sure if this is exaggeration and how many others held the same position.

According to Wikipedia, Jasmine and Glory are gods, and Illyria is one of the Old Ones. But Illyria was worshipped as a god, so I guess you can consider her one in the Buffyverse.

I'll let you into a secret.
Wikipedia isn't the fountain of knowledge it appears to be.
I may be wrong, but Drogyn refered to her as Old one, not as an Old One which could be him saying she is an actual Old One or that she is simply old.

We do have her refering to herself as a God to the Gods.

But the Old Ones were worshipped as gods. And she was called an Old One, meaning she is the only identified Old One in the Buffyverse.

I agree with BotD. Wikipedia is good, but it's not the be all and end all of Buffyverse facts. Especially not in cases like this, where there is no consensus amongst fans as to whom classifies as what. On Wikipedia they all (plus the First Evil) fall under the category of Fictional Deities, because that makes them easier to understand for laymen. The problem in this debate is that we have haven't really got to much hard facts to base our theories on.

---- Onto the actual discussion on gods. ----

I think that in this context the term god has two distinct uses. First, it is a label or title people both inside and out the fictional universe use to denote those of great power. Secondly, in more absolute terms god might refer to an actual species, like human, dog, or vampire. So what is it? God as species or god as title?

God as Species
If you consider a god to be a species, you might be prone to think that since Jasmine, Illyria, and Glory displayed such vastly different powers and abilities, that only one of them is truly a god. Therefore, I think it would not be exactly correct to say that a god is a type of species, but rather it might be a family of species or an order or a class. Perhaps it is even an entirely different kingdom, ie in addition to animals, plants, fungi, and bacteria, there might be a fifth category for gods. In fact, I would argue that demons would be counted as another additional kingdom. (Check out some articles on wikipedia on Biological Taxonomy.)
Anyway, if you were to treat god as a different kingdom, it might be easy to see how Illyria, Glory, and Jasmine all fall under the same banner, because they might be completely different species all, in completely different families and classes. Just think of how different insects, frogs, and humans can be; they too are all different species in the same kingdom. If you regard god as a species or group of species, some unclassified Supernatural entities from the Buffyverse might also fall in this category such as the First Evil and the Ra-Tet, but Willow certainly wouldn't.

God as Title
It is equally possible to imagine that the term god has nothing to do with the biological classification of beings in the Buffyverse, but that it is instead merely an honourary title bestowed upon those with great power. Just a couple of ranks up from Governor, King, Emperor is the rank of god. Some real-world rulers have even been called gods-incarnate or have called themselves it. The way Illyria describes herself as "god-king of the primordium" it certainly sounds like a title. Question is of course, what what do you need to qualify for this title? Vast powers is a probably a good start, although this is very relative and subjective. In the world with nothing but shrimp, a lobster might already be considered a god. The key ingredient would seem to be worshippers. Is as many as one enough to be considered a god? Or do you have to be revered by a substantial amount of people/entities? Probably, but again, that's pretty subjective. Also, what if you don't consider yourself a god, but are worshipped as one: does that make you a god? Whatever your subjective standards are, if you look at the term god this way, Jasmine and Glory are without a doubt gods. Illyria, however, could be called a former-god, because she only had one known worshipper left, and he's pretty dead. If you look at it this way, Kennedy may have been right in calling Willow a god, if she herself worshipped her like one. But the Ra-Tet are not gods by this definition.

Solution: God as a little bit of both??
I think that perhaps in the Buffyverse a god is neither of the above exactly, but more like a little bit of both. I do think that there might a separate species or group of species for extremely powerful, immortal entities, which (by human standards) have all the qualities of gods. But the entities in this group are probably not entirely congruent with the entities that are venerated as gods in the entire Buffyverse. For example, in the world with nothing but shrimp, the lobster, an entity which is clearly not of the god-species, could still be worshipped. On the other hand, in a world where only god-species entities live, they might not recognise each other as gods, because they are all on the same level.

So, that's how I look at it. Glory is a Deus Infernus, Illyria is an Unus Anticus, and Jasmine is a Potensus Est; three different distantly related very powerful species in the biological kingdom of deii. In addition, all three of them were/are/have been worshipped as gods.

OK, not the first time i've read you say 'I agree with BotD' recently - are you coming onto me?
I started this a thread just like this a couple of months ago, but I don't remember where on here I did it. But like I said in my other thread I believe Illyria is the most powerful and would win. Of course Illyria before her power drain. Because Illyria is one of if not the most powerful Old One as they said in the show. And Old Ones are nothing but VERY VERY VERY powerful demons that are worshipped as Gods. What makes a God a God, is someone professing them to be so. Like in religion we call God, God because he's suppose to be all powerful and the creator of us all. Same with Buffyverse, Glory was called a God because she was very powerful and ruled a hell dimension. And Jasmine herself is an Old One like Illyria, however the benevelot Old Ones became what is now known as the Powers That Be, and the evil ones basically became your Illyrias and Glorys and many others.

Who would win in a fight Glory, Jasmine or Illyria ?
Taken at the end of the series of Angel.
Well, Glory had a slight problem highlighted by Giles being able to do the suffocation thing.
That leaves Jasmine and Illyria. Jasmine had been killed by Connor, the only one left standing at the end was Illyria, so Illyria wins by default.
Taken at the beginning of their appearances on the shows, my perception of their powers indicated Illyria. Jasmine's power seemed to come from being able to hynotise, Glory can move very fast and Illyria can alter time, reckon Jasmine just lost. Altering time to suit her own needs would negate Glory's movement especially when she was Ben. To me that means Illyria would win.
Were they all Gods ?
Hmm, whose word am I likely to believe ? the TV shows exec. producers, its creators, the writers, who ever allowed it to go to air with the content it did, or some jumped up idiots at Wikipedia who reckon they know better than the people from the show ?. I'd prefer to believe the show.

Well Illyria could just slow time and then kill em in the middle. Ya..I can picturing it now, sweet victory. Again, before she was tamed.

''This will be our day of Glory.''

New user... so yay! my first post. Anyways, here's wat I think (only an opinion coz der really not enough hard facts), but if all were in there 'true' form I'm betting on Glory.

Actually... even in their weaken state as they are now, still Glory will win. So ''Glory! Glory!! Glory!!!'' (lol another one of Dawn's screaming lines)

I think Illyria would win, personally. Or at least, if she took on a form where she was as sexy as Blue Fred, I'd be rooting for her at least. 🙂
