Well, not really. The entire package of Dawn was the Key, not just her blood. Her blood being made to flow was simply an important part of the ritual and ending the blood flow was, in turn, a part of ending the ritual.

The loophole was that Buffy's blood happened to be the same as Dawn's, thereby creating the loophole that her bloodflow stopping was enough to end the ritual and close the portal, as occured.

But don't confuse the two points. It wasn't simply the blood but all of Dawn that was the Key. The flowing of her blood was merely a part of the ritual.

Isn't there a part in season five where Dawn is bleeding and Buffy goes up to her then mixes their blood by placing her hand/arm over Dawn's to show that they're truly sisters or blood relatives.
This is why Buff was able to halt the (unkown to me as of this time) ritual at the end of year 5.
 
I think we've come to the conclusion that it's Summers blood that is the key.
But if that's truly the case, why not just instill Buffy with this key instead of building an entirely new person around it and giving it to Buffy to protect?

I don't know if that can be explained using the series or just fan discussions.
 
I personally still don't see how it could be Summers Blood that is the key, simply because the monks took from Buffy, but never gave anything back, they don't say we infused you with this key essence....its Only Dawn......

if that was the case, it would be dangerous. clearly the monks wanted to keep the key around or they would have destoryed it. but buffys the slayer, she could die any time, therefore the key would disappear. good for the fate of the planet but bad for the monks for whatever reason they had to keep it around.

Also - Glory says the key is new to this world because the monks had recently made The Key into human form. Buffy wasn't new. The Watcher also pointed out that Dawn is the entire key, not just their blood.
 
Taking all of this into account I get the impression that The monk made summers blood the Key, they added the mystical energy to their blood!
 
I can buy that this was a writing oversight, a hiccup. Glory not knowing what form the key had-a log maybe? In spite of Spike's defining line-"it's always got to be the blood". Series TV is time pressure, time pressure. I was impressed at the small number of inconsistencies that we saw throughout.

But even if it was an oversight, it's always possible for us fans to improvise. 😉 I read through the discussion and it occurred to me that if Glory knew she had to pour living energy from the Key into the portal in the form of blood at the right time, right place, then perhaps if the Key had been transformed into a log by the monks, she and her minions would have had to effect a further transformation of the Key into a living being in order to use it. Which I assume they could have easily done-remember "Shadow".

I got the sense that the monks didn't have to use Buffy's blood to make the Key human, but they choose her blood because that way was their best chance of keeping Glory from getting the Key (other than destroying it).
 
I have a couple more episodes left in season five for these to be explained (hopefully).

In "Intervention" Glory says the key is new to this world. But at the very end of the next episode, Tara says Dawn is the key with Glory watching--thus now she knows.
However, what about the "key is new to this world" idea from the earlier episode? How could Glory be sure of Tara's truthfulness? And also...

Next:
What is it with the key that only folks with less then stable minds can see it? (such as tara and the others in the hospital psych ward).

What is up with this Ben character? he says he's Glory's brother but he turns into her on a couple of occasions...: scratch
