I've heard opinions within other posts, but really wanted to start a thread about Glory.

What did you all think of her as a big bad?

Honestly, i cannot stand her. I found her a bit ridiculous. I understand the type of personality they were going for, and maybe it was just Clare, or the writing for her particular character, i don't know what it was...but it made her come off far more annoying. I wanted to like her, i thought the bitchy goddess would be a cool big bad but she came off way immature and just silly.

I didn't find her likable or scary... I actually feared for the gang with Spike in season 2, and with Angelus, but Glory just didn't seem like the big huge threat they made her out to be. She seemed whiny and pretty disappointing.

Thing is, though, i WANT to like her. So really, any of you who do love her, i want to know why! I want to hear reasons! maybe you can sway me? lol

So yeah, yay or nay to Glory?
 
She's actually my favorite Big Bad.

She was like the Glamor Model of Hell Gods and I loved that angle they took with her. I know she seemed petty and immature but that was the whole point. Being stuck in the human dimension made her that way, made her insane and petty and childish and it was all those effects that were her downfall in the end. Not being the brightest God in the heavens and all...haha.

But I think they needed her to be like that otherwise she would have been too dark a Big Bad. I mean if you consider a Glory who is serious, sane, and deadly focussed she'd be way too frightening and the Scoobies would have had even less of a chance than they already had.


Her crazy pettiness was needed for entertainment (and it did entertain me. A lot. Haha) but also for the narrative. As without her insanity and airheadedness holding her back Buffy and the others would have been dead by episode eight.
 
good points, absolutely. i didn't think of it that way. Though i guess i found her pettiness less entertaining and more annoying, but i think a lot of that has to do with just what different things people find funny? I mean i won't lie, there were times here or there where she was charming. But for the most part... her on screen made me go "ugh".
 
For some people Glory Humor does make people go ugh and others it makes them smile broadly. Like you said, it depends on your type of humor.

Glory for me hit my smile-o-meter right on the mark. I mean she didn't make me laugh out loud the way Giles does, but she did make me smile broadly. I enjoyed watching her. (Well now, that came out a lot more lesbian than it sounded in my head)
 
Meh, I just liked her. I don't think that all of the criticisms of Clare Kramer are well-founded.
 
I loved Glory, infact she is one of my favourite characters in the whole show. I loved the whole "fragile mind and insane" thing, she was just pure crazy. I loved her back story, being sent too earth etc. And just the fact that she was a massive threat and that Buffy had to work hard in defeting her, along with the team. Plus she was super pretty 🙂
 
I hated her. I could barely stand to see her on the screen. She was bitchy, but that wasn't it. Because I loved Cordy when she was that way.

I think it was the shallowness of the character. It distracted me from the "scary" thing and in the end I think she came across as just as scary as the Trio...pre-Warren going REALLY bad.

I liked Glory and didn't LOVE Glory, but I thought she was an interesting character. She was funny from time to time and her minions always made me laugh. I also have to agree with Fireball in the fact that I was glad that she was not easy to beat. It took a lot out of Buffy to finally get rid of her, I mean it took her life, right?! I think that she was an interesting big bad, but I perfer Dru's brand of crazy over Glory's anyday! :smile:
 
I thought Glory was a fantastic big bad. She was nice to look at (and well juxtaposed ugly minions), it was interesting and different to see Buffy get her arse wooped by a pretty blonde girl with a better wardrobe then her.
I thought that Glory was physically the strongest threat to the scoobs... it was nice to see the beginning of Willows downward spiral - also I thought it was a clever homage to the episode where Giles goes after Angel after Angel has killed Jenny.
Sometimes I looked at Glory and just thought to myself "wow if she wasn't so damn strong I would want to beat her up if I met her" I thought that made her a good villain to me. Just annoying enough to me to make me wanna shut her up... and much to strong for me to be able to. Maybe this is what's confusing about Glory - rather then being Scary and Strong she's Annoying and Strong.

It was fun to have a big bad that was based on the stereotype that originally we were lead to believe Buffy had been before she came into her power.
 
Nope didn't like the actress. I couldn't get past Clare Kramer's performance. If I'm watching an actor, I want to forget they are acting and get involved in the drama but I couldn't do that with Clare, so I couldn't get into Glory. That line when she says "I've been looking all over for you" sounds like she's reading from an autocue.

Ugh, I know! Her acting is unbearable!
i liked Glory (though she is my least favourite big bad) but there was something wrong with the whole season, it just seemed different to all the others and i cant decide whether thats a good thing or a bad thing, could be the reason why Glory is my least fav, does anyone know what i mean? And i agree with DarklyDreamingDrusilla, Dru's kind of insanity is way preferable to Glory's, though i could just be thinking that cause i'm biased towards Dru
 
See I don't think Dru and Glory's insanity can be compared. They're too different. Drusilla was, as Spike said 'completely out of her mind' but 'she was straight about it'. Dru knew on some level that what she was saying was crazy but she didn't mind because her crazy usually lead to something meaningful. i.e the messages she got from her visions. She was an ethereal crazy. She's kinda like the crazy eccentric old ladies you get on the little side market streets in L.A, who offer to read your palms or whatever.

Glory on the other hand was entirely nuts...and didn't know it! She was fully convinced she was the one making the most sense, because she was crazy enough to believe that. I loved her crazy- the way one moment she'd be entirely serious and deadly and the next she's cuddling up to her victim, confusing both the victim and us! And I remember really smiling in humor and disbelief in No Place Like Home where she suddenly starts rambling 'Not now, Mommy's talking!' and when she tells...Brother Luca, is it?...that she knows why he won't tell her where the key is. It's intimacy issues. Obviously. Haha.

And I get that the whole point was that she was meant to look not much older than Buffy, blonde like Buffy, cute like Buffy, spoke like L.A Buffy, and had the same great fashion sense as Buffy. But she was STRONGER than Buffy. Like the Buffster said 'I'm tired of strong, little women who aren't me'. That was what threw the entire scooby gang. She looks no different than Buffy, yet she can toss her around like ragdoll.

Kana- I never thought that line sounding like she was reading from an autocue. It just sounded like Glory was in one of her nuts 'Im evil but I'm casual and friendly about it' modes. I loved Clare's performance.

I liked Glory, but I didn't love her. And after seeing Bring It On, I imagine her as a hell-bent cheerleader, so ya know, weird. I don't love her or hate her, she's cool, though [=
 
Glory as a character has never been on my favorite list, and I'm not big fan of Miss Cramer either.
I was cheering up for Willow in Tough Love when she went after Glory to kick her ass.
 
Liked but didn't love Glory. I thought she was funny. And I guess I'm not seeing where the actress is getting so much dislike. She had a ultra-crazy character who rocked back and forth between petty and menacing. I thought her flightiness was well-portrayed. Or is that the problem? Did you find the portrayal lacking BECAUSE it was so irregular? I say it's not a bug, it's a feature.

As for the way Glory's written, who's to say that such an ultrapowerful being WOULDN'T be petty? Especially when faced (for the first time) with actual obsticles. Lots of monarchs and emperors were, simply because there wasn't anyone to tell them "no."

Though I do agree that I prefer Dru's crazy to Glory's crazy. Dru's crazy was endearing. Glory's crazy was what we see in more than a few dictators in the current day.
 
Exactly Legate, I agree- Clare's portrayal of Glory was perfect and I saw no flaw in her acting skills. She was meant to be playing as someone who flitted back and forth between moods and actions. She was wicked crazed.

And I nodded emphatically when I read your comparison of Glory to ruling monarchs. Monarchs have always been petty. I mean, come on, Henry the Eighth was told he wasn't allowed a divorce so he went off AND CREATED HIS OWN CHURCH. I mean that's a level of petty I hardly knew existed.

whats up with people thinking there were acting flaws? i haven't watched the Buffy seasons for a while as i do not yet own them (a problem soon to be corrected) as i'm more of an Angel fan, but i dont remember ever seeing bad acting. i saw Glory's constant change of moods as being a part of her character, that was one of her best and most entertaining features, she was unpredictable because of it and therefore far more dangerous, i remember being a little concerned for Dawns health that time she was with Glory (just after she changed from Ben in the hospital).
i agree with your assessment of Dru and Glory's differing mental states, i just find Dru the more entertaining kind of crazy, its easy to forget how dangerous she is sometimes. lol

I thought Clare was excellent. But a few other people have said they thought it was a bad performance. I didn't agree with those statements
