Glory... Love Her Or Hate Her?

How Do You Feel about Glory?

I loved Glory, I didn't and still don't see why evil should be all dark and love the sound of it's own voice making these boringly long speeches about doom and gloom.

Hence my love of glory she was Doom and a tad of Gloom but in a bright and shiny bottle that (hides face in shame) talks alot like me, I also liked how Glory took evil in her stride, she didn't see evil as a big thing, it was just her getting what she wanted and as long as that was going smoothly she was chipper. (Oh but the Mayor id my fav Big Bad.)

Glory and The Mayor are evenly matched for my favorite Big Bads. I love them equally :D haha
For me, the elements of her character were not the issue. Dru was plenty insane but I always loved her performance. To me the concept of a prima donna, crazy making, red dress clad god is no more ridiculous than a cheerleading vampire slayer called Buffy, it's the execution that I didn't like.

I suppose it's personal really. I've always like Vincent Kartheiser's portrayal of Connor, although he was never my favourite character and many don't like him. That's what's great about this medium, people can be touched, moved, or disgusted in different ways. 🙂.

You see that's it, I agree. That's what many misunderstand. I actually like the concept of Glory, thematically, it really works, I just don't think Clare pulled it off.
 
How else could it have been acted?

I think that Clare performed the character of Glory exactly the same way that I would've interpreted the script, had I been given it.
 
I hate her. Poor acting, lack of any real molevalence, the only thing she had going for her was her immortality/strength gift that all Big Bads have, she had no real flare or any interesting qualities.

Just one big vacuous, idiotic blonde that wouldn't die. One big bad I can easily forget and move on from.

She wasn't really meant to be malevolent though, she was more the 'spoilt brat that throws her toys out of the hell pram' Big Bad than the 'incorporeal origin of evil' Big Bad.
 
But then how are we supposed to take her seriously if she isn't malevolent? All i thought was that it was ridiculous that she had any power whatsoever. And it wasn't an endearing, wow she's so not the type but its kind of cool way but more in an unbelievable way.

I totally agree with everything you said. I thought she portrayed Glory perfectly.
I mean if you take the script, forget the aired episodes, and looking at it initially, the lines and the directions how else could you have portrayed it? She did it exactly as was required, exactly as Glory was meant to come across. Extremely powerful, a God, but just totally and utterly petty and a hellgod ditz.

Pretty much like A LOT of Gods in Greek Mythology. Come on, three goddesses tried to bribe a man into saying they were the prettiest of the three. Then the two who were let down cursed him, doomed him, threw lightening bolts. All because in his opinion they weren't as pretty. Gods are petty- living in their own little soap opera. And that was how Glory was written.
 
I loved Glory.

In fact, in my epic fanfic I brought her back because she was so awesome.

I even created a bit more back story for her, I made it so that she was originally part of the Senior Partners and it is them that sent her to this dimension because she was beoming too powerful.


If you haven't read it, you should. The two worlds collide, Buffy and Angel, but the big one is Illyria/Dawn/Glory/Lilah - brilliant🙂
 
I loved her. She's my favourite Big Bad
I love the way she talks, i love what she says. When she pays a visit to Buffy and says "ooh, i like her, she's sassy" about dawn, i know that whole speech off by heart. She get's a little bit less fun when she starts all that switching between herself and Ben in the last couple of eps.
 
I think Glory's great. I can't imagine her being portrayed any other way. She was the perfect contrast from the big bad of S4, Adam, and I think it was great to see chick fights going on again, lol. I thought Clare's acting was great and that she pulled off the role really well.
 
Yeah next to Darla and Drusilla, Glory is my favorite evil character on Buffy.
She is so funny and I just can't explain it! I love her! hahaha.
 
I agree with JCC - I'd be interested to hear how people would portray her differently to how she was.
Obviously they couldn't take the same angle as Druscilla, because, well, it had already been done.
 
Absolute love for Glory. She was definitely big and bad- she was hardcore to beat, and hey, who thought Gods would be that interested in fashion and shoes? A god after my own heart!
But seriously, she was brilliant. It was like taking the 'popular', bitchy, selfish, self-obsessed and generally irritating girls from high school, and giving her superpowers- and I don't know about anyone else but if anyone took those girls from my school, and gave them superpowers, I'd run screaming in terror. The whole idea of that made me think that it's somewhat poignant that you can't ever beat those girls until you face up to them- for example, if they made your life hell at school, it'll stay with you til you face up to it and beat it down. Just like Buffy and Glory- Buffy ran, Glory followed- Buffy finally stood up to her (with help from her friends) and she won the battle.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but on a superficial level, I loved the whole idea of Glory looking like she's stepped out of a designer catalogue, with attitude and vocals to match (nice change from the slimey, the ugly, and the melanin-deprived), and on a deeper level, the whole idea that I seem to read behind it!

oooh i like your reading! no wonder I liked her as a big bad, when season 5 aired I was battling with my own high school Glorys!
I loved Glory; after Spike, she was my favourite Big Bad, and high on my list of favourite characters in the show. I found her very funny, I loved how she acted, talked and the things she said. Clare was a great actress, too, and did brilliantly with the character. And, Hello Cutie, with what you said about her being like one of those 'popular' high school girls, I completely agree! You took the words out of my mouth... But said it much better than I ever would...

I tend to speak negatively about Glory, but in reality, she's a pretty good concept for a Big Bad. It's just that she had so many irritating qualities. Her one-liners that were supposed to be funny weren't, and her "crazy, yet insightful" speeches (re: her speech about emotions in The Weight of the World) just came across as cheesy or strange.

Also, I agree with the people who say she was poorly acted. Clare always sounded like she was both reading it off an intercom and trying too hard.

Well, at least season 5 had lots of redeeming qualities...it's one of my favorites 😀
 
I found i only liked her just a little in the last...say... 2 episodes of season 5. I think she acted the whole, feeling the guilt and having a piece of humanity thing in her well enough. Not great, but well enough.

But still, i'm almost done with this season and I wish i could strangle her and say "Shutup!" i just find her irritating, not funny or engaging in anyway.
