Glory - Powerful Philosopher?

Last week I turned in my a paper for my english final in school centered around this quote. It's kind of sad and depressing, but how true it is! I just saw it on the main page a few minutes ago and I wanted to post it and see what people think of this.

Joss Whedon made this character as the funny, bubbly, and one of the most evil things in the world. But from an outside view, (Glory's) really think about this quote. Do you think our
world is really like this? In my paper I said yes. What about you?

It´s true to some extent but I wouldn´t lable it on humans as a whole. But as an outsider looking in I guess that it could appear that way. Life is complex, and we all try to deal with it in different ways. But it´s not like all of us are "looking for the fastest way out". But we do seem to have the need to "get away from reality" from time to time. We just handle it differently. Some get drunk or use drugs, some are looking for a fight, some have sex and some just get totally lost in a book, movie or tv-series...

I think people make bad choices or there parents do, sometimes bad things happen to good ppl but in the end it is up to you to change whats wrong with ur life . Also making what u see the world like a better and more beautifull place to be x

I've always been a Glory fan and this is the prime example why, I agree with this comment wholeheartedly. Everyone is looking for a way out, i guess the most important thing though is trying to make the most of the life that you have, despite how hard this can be. I'm sure this will spark another Glory yay or Glory nay fight though... I found Glory's portrayal, and the way Joss wrote Glory's strain of crazy absolutely brilliant and enjoyable.

People didn't like Glory? She was so well realised. I mean, there was no need for them to write the lines mentioned above; she could just be crazy Goddess chick after all. They made her so much deeper than most of the other Big Bads so far. The Master was very one-dimensional (albeit, a great villain), The Mayor was hilarious, but not exactly deep, and Adam. Well...Adam was Adam. Only Angelus and Faith were in the same league as Glory, and they get all the love!

Very true. I think Glory is one of the most interesting villains because she's so multi-layered and breath of fresh air (or evil air) after Adam (though he was a bit of a boring villain, I still love me some 'Primeval'). Being trapped in a human body for so long probably either helped Glory gain human perspective or confused her more. I always found it ironic she had trouble understanding the human race when she fed on energy from people's brains. Then again, I think Glory didn't understand the emotions that humans go through rather than the logic behind their actions because Glory, too, had logic. Her logic was to get back to her home hell dimension because things made sense there. Evil made sense to her.

Anyway, I'll stop rambling and end with this quote that really summed up Glory's actions throughout the season: "It's that nagging pinch of humanity that makes me go for the hurt instead of the kill."

Human beings as a species are sheep, and in our overcrowded societies and hard life struggles with the empty promises of there always being something better out there.... that's what people do. In extremes, they either hurt themselves or each other.

What she says is so true... because the majority of people in this world are perfectly happy with either not thinking at all or letting others think for them

All of the villains, or a lot of them anyway, in the Buffyverse are, in some ways powerful philosophers because they all tell us something true, despite being evil. They tell us something that is horrible and hurtful and spot on, which is what makes them so dangerous. (Sidebar:They touched on this theme with the Joker in the Dark Knight with the Joker, who was evil, but did say a lot of true things about humanity). Just because someone is evil, doesn't mean they are wrong. That is a lot of what I love about the Whedonverse.

I think that Glory is spot on, humans seem to destroy things whether they mean to or not, and with the "fastest way out" part of the quote i think is especially true, human beings have a tendancy to wish there lives away, always looking forward to reaching the next stage, its not until we really age and realise all we have left is death do we realise that we have wished our lives away, I think Glory is a very good villain and is right in alot of what she says, even the scoobies seem to listen to what she says and in times semi understand what she is saying!!!

I do think that Glory was briliant iun her lunacy and I think that quote only proves it. It takes a special kind of crazy person to be as self-aware as Glory was. She tops the list of big bads for me!

yes, i think glory made some stunning observations and speeches. like willow23 said, just because someone is "evil," doesn't mean they can't say something true and meaningful and needed. i love buffy the vampire slayer because i think one of its most powerful messages is that not everything is black and white--the grey area is what matters, is what needs to be examined.

Lol i think Glory is powerful and right, as i said i believe she has insight on the human race, but i also think she makes people see Buffy The Vampire Slayer as not only a Sci-Fi show but that it does in fact have some realism in its depths too!!
