hwy guys!
i don't know if this is the right place to post this, so if it's not, can one of the mods move it for me? thanx.
anyway, i have a question about S5 of buffy and glory's quest to find the key and open the portals to the deminsions beyond.
did glory HAVE to be on the hellmouth for this to work? during the season, did anyone ever mention glory's plan ONLY working on the hellmouth, or could it have been done anywhere? was the only reason she was in sunnydale because that's where dawn was? she since glory was looking for the key, dawn being the key, is this the only reason her plan happened in sunnydale?
i hope you can all understand this, and i wouldlove it if somene could reply to me!!
thanx for all your help!!! :confused0

well...you pose a good and interesting question! I always thought that the reason Glory was there in sunnydale was because she believed that the key was there...and dawn being the key and living in sunnydale...well you get the picture. I also thought that it was necessary for Glory to be at the hellmouth in order for her to get back to her dimension, it just sorta makes sense to me and seeing as though dawn was in sunnydale, well it made sense for Glory to be there. ok now I don't know if made sense... :confused3

Hmm. Well, I get the sense that Glory and her disfigured hobbit minions were hot on the trail of the monks, who were in possession of the key. The monks went to Sunnydale to transmogrify the key into Dawn, and bequeath Dawn to Buffy"”assuming that something precious to the Slayer would be carefully and viciously protected.

So, everyone's in town, at least indirectly, 'cause of Buffy. And Buffy's in town 'cause, well, that's where the Hellmouth is. (Can't remember, were Buffy and Joyce somehow carefully manipulated into moving to Sunnydale by the Watchers?)

I don't recall that Glory had to be on the Hellmouth. She just had to find the key, right? Why would the monks take such a huge risk of bringing the key to Sunnydale, if a hellmouth were required for the dimension corrosion stuff? I just don't remember for sure. Someone around here's got the skinny...

Aah but remember that the planets or stars needed to be in alignment or something like that.

Also isn't the Hellmouth like a gateway to different dimensions? I was reading Queen of the Slayers and it had something about the hellmouth. Anyways maybe the hellmouth is like a waiting room for demons, gods, old ones to other dimensions.

Yeah, minor (and major) plot points tend to leave my noggin pretty quickly. Must re-watch.

Giles says in The Gift (and I think it was mentioned before too) that the energy of the key needed to be poured into a specific place at a specific time. So I guess that would be where they built the tower and all..

they wouldn't have built a HUGE tower if they didn't need too ...would they?
Hmm. Alright. So, possibly the monks figured that it was inevitable that Glory would kill them all"”thus they'd lose the key. And they knew what Giles discovered"”that Glory would end up at that specific time and place (the crazy-person-tower in Sunnydale)"”and that a Slayer would be the only one on earth who could successfully protect the key. So, the necessary time, place, "object", bad guy and good guy are all in the same town. All the elements for a major smackdown"”all 'cause of the Hellmouth, I guess.

Besides having to be on the Hellmouth for her ritual, and possibly following the monks there, maybe Glory just guessed the key was there. I mean, when you're looking for something super-mystical, a hellmouth is probably a really good place to start searching.

Interesting convo.

I don't have any answers myself, but I think this is the quote you guys were looking for -

GILES: The key was ... living energy. It needed to be channeled, poured into a specific place at a specific time. The energy ... would flow into that spot, the walls between the dimensions break down. It stops, the energy's used up, the walls come back up. Glory uses that time to get back into her own dimension, not caring that all manner of hell will be unleashed on earth in the meantime.

Well, I sorta decided to explain this in one of my stories. I figure the Key is like a central train station. Glory needed to make sure she got on the right train at the right time. Her minions did the readings to work out the time the train arrived at the nearest entrance to the station, which just happened to be Sunnydale. I think the ritual could have worked anywhere, but the time would have been different.

thanx for replying guys!! i can't actually remember if anyone specificaly stated that glory's plan HAD to take place on the hellmouht. i guess i'll just have to go back to S5 and watch them cloely to find out!! :flower2:

It's very interesting to ponder this.

I remember the specific quote from Giles about the living energy being used at a specific time... and that being the hellmouth. But, as we know, there is another Hellmouth in Cleveland. So, I wonder if it was just any Hellmouth in general?

The only reason that it would seem that Glory was in Sunnydale was because she was following the monks. The monks did their spell in Sunnydale. Yet, Glory did not know that Dawn was the key until much later. So, is it that the ritual needed to be done on the hellmouth, or just convenient because that's where Dawn actually was?

I think it had to take place on the hellmouth because of what Giles said however it seems a bit stupid to bring the key where it can do the most damage i mean they didnthave to have buffy protect the key its not like she was the only girl in the world with superpowers

I think there's a good chance it was just an accident of writing that things played out the way they did.

Nevertheless they are the way they are, so it's fun to try to make sense of them.

The theory that makes the most sense to me makes use of stuff that's been mentioned before on this thread. There are at least 2 hellmouths. It's easy to postulate there might be more. The key and Buffy have a connection to demon power. It's possible demon power may be necessary to activate, or even store the key. A Hellmouth would be a good place for that.

As far as I know though, there's nothing in S-5 stating canonically a Hellmouth is necessary to store or activate the key.

so, the general message i'm getting is that the only reason glory was in sunnydale was because that's where buffy, and dawn, happened to be?
thanks for all your help guys!! ::heart:: :star0:

I dont think it needed to be at the hellmout because this is never said, maybe it was a coincedence that places the key point at the hellmouth or maybe there is a reason which we are completely ignorant of e.g. maybe thats where the key was created so thats where its power can be unleashed

I figure it's like a "moth to a flame". The Hellmouth draws that kind of stuff to it by its very nature, so of course everything would converge there...besides, it makes storylines easier...😉

Cant argue with that lol
If Glory wasn't drawn to the Hellmouth, there wouldn't be a story, now would there? The Hellmouth is kind of essential to Buffy... as she lives there. If Glory went somewhere else, we would have a very different Season 5.
