Go Ahead and Argue But Buffy is The Slayer, and I Can prove it.

Well in order to make up some kind of explanation I would like you to answer the vital question in this debate. If you say 'Buffy is THE slayer', there's but one thing I should ask you.

What is THE slayer?

To me it's real simple. The Slayer is the one everyone on the show calls "The Slayer".

The problem is, you can think that, but if you call Buffy"The Slayer" long enough in fan circles, sooner or later some self proclaimed Buffologist is going to start quoting the slayer-line to you like he/she just personally discovered it, and tell you "Buffy is not the slayer. Faith is".

I have a question.. when Buffy first died she only died for like a minute so how did they know to call the next slayer (kendra) i know it was written that Buffy was to be killed by the master so is that how they knew?? and if so why didnt they do something earlier if they knew the slayer was to be killed by the master so soon after being called what was the point in her being called in the first place?? and were Kendra and Faith already in training to be slayers when Buffy was or was not THE Slayer i think i remember something about Kendra being taken from her family when she was young to be trained...
These are probably really stupid questions that cannot be answered except by Joss but they are always things i have wondered....

Actually Akasha, I believe those questions have actual answers, with some pretty concrete support.

First of al though, who are "they" ?

As far as I know the transference of slayer power has always been described as an automatic process based on rules created by the magics that created the slayer line.

The First slayer was created by the Shadowmen, thousands of years ago. We know this from Joss's Comic book mini series Fray (Ep. 3).

The rules governing the slayer line also appear to have been created by the Shadowmen. It's suggested pretty clearly in the following bit from Chosen

BUFFY (cont'd)
What if you could have that power?
Now. All of you. In every
generation one Slayer is born because
a bunch of guys that died thousands
of years ago made up that rule.

At no time has it ever been suggested any person or group of people is actively participating in the transference process.

In fact in Showtime Beljoxa's eye tells us there is a corruption in the laws governing the slayer line. To me this suggests the passing on is done remotely by mystical power governed by set rules, not by actual individuals.

Were Kendra and Faith in training while Buffy was the slayer? I'm going to say definitely yes for Kendra, and possibly yes for Faith.

Kendra arrives fully trained following the season of Buffy's first death, and I believe you're correct when you say Kendra said something about her watcher taking her from her family at an early age.

Faith spoke of having a watcher before coming to Sunnydale, but there is no timeframe for it.

Yes Kendra was a potential slayer, and her tribe knew of that so they sent her off to her watcher to train, Kendra hadnt seen her family since she was probably like 3-4 since she didnt even remember her family that well.

Since Kendra died in Becoming Pt.1 Faith was actived probably sometime towards Becoming Pt.2 so she had been the Slayer for awhile now. I do not think she was already trained by her watcher before she became the Slayer because the way she grew up, The Watchers Council probably wouldve taken her away from her mother to train her and give her a better life.

I do agree with you about the whole Buffy is THE Slayer.

Well then you don't need to prove that Buffy is THE slayer, because there's nothing to prove, there's just to count the times that the characters call Buffy THE slayer and to compare that with the times that they call others THE slayer.

As for the reason they call Buffy THE slayer, perhaps it has something to do with the fact that the scoobies all hang out with Buffy and are very close to her, and that there have been only a few other slayers, but most of the time there was only one.

However, as you mentioned N4H, we know that Buffy could not spawn a new slayer, because she didn't (The Gift), and if Faith also cannot spawn a new slayer, then that leaves the potentials not actually being potentials. Which of course, would negate the need of the First to attack the potentials, since they have no true slayer potential. So we'd need to explain why the First, who seems to be fully aware of the ramifications of the Slayer line, is bothering to pick off weak potential slayers, who were not potential slayers after all.

We could make an argument that the First knew in advance about the possibility of Willow pulling the 'activate all slayers' trick. It wouldn't be out of the realm of possiblity, since The First does display quite a bit of foreknowledge. For instance, The First obviously knew enough to be concerned with 'The Vamp with a Soul' (Spike) and his eventual part in things. Maybe it did suspect in advance that all potentials would be activated?

And if so, why didn't it focus more on Willow? It did try to convince Willow not to use her magic, but it's attention did not seem to be focused in Willow's direction, so much as in Spike and Buffy's direction. Or is it possible it didn't know how the potentials would be activated, or who would do the activating, but knew the danger existed?

What are you thoughts?

My thought, first time he came was for Angel the soul-vampire, second time he came was right after a second vampire got a soul, Spike... and in As5 we learn that two vampires with a soul cause somekind of rift together... I think it means something.

But Buffy could activate new slayers through the power of the scythe. True, Willow does the magic, but seeing as it's the slayer's weapon with a special connection to slayers, it's not too much to suggest the possibility both Slayer and Scythe must be in place to make the magic work.

The scythe is a priority for The First. It's a powerful weapon, but it's not a bomb. The First wants the scythe for more than just a weapon. The only other thing we know it does, is it activates new slayers. Unless we know of some other capability, it seems logical to conclude The First probably wants the scythe for it's slayer activating capabilities.

I postulate: Corrupt Buffy, then make use of her power through the scythe. Evil slayers.

The First wants Buffy alive. If you were the First and you wanted to corrupt either Buffy or Faith, which one would you choose? Probably Faith right? It tries to kill Faith twice. What does that tell you?

There is the possibility The First planned to corrupt Buffy through the love of a vampire somehow. In Amends though, The First tells us Angel is useful to it's plan, but not vital.

Okay okay. So we know The First knows the Slayer line in broken. And yet, we also know that it must suspect a reformation of the line is possible; thus it's motivation in killing all the potentials. This supports the idea that The First knew the inherant capability of the Scythe, but doesn't explain why it would kill the SITs it was hoping to turn to the 'dark side'.

I'm mainly fascinated by the implications of this theory, which is a very good one imo. Possibly the First didn't know *how* the reformation might occur, but it *must* have known it was a possibility. This just makes me wonder about The First, and it's dealings with Willow.

The First could not be unaware of the power of Willow, so it must have been clever enough to see the high probability of Willow being involved in the reformation of the slayer line. I mean, given the chess peices on the board, if I had to suspect any of them as being critical in repairing the slayer line, it would be Willow. And yet, the attempts at keeping Willow out of the picture seemed almost cursory. I mean, it could have assigned Willow her own personal Turok-Han or something, or made a serious attempt to take her out. Did it fear something there, or was it completely oblivious?

It's information seems very accurate thus far. What blinded it to Willow's role? Maybe it suspected the witch in the pyramid of being the possible force behind a reformed slayer line, and missed the boat on Willow completely?

Yeah, I know what you mean. Personally I think they should have made a bigger fuss over Willow, but they went off on the Spuffy storyline instead. I pass it off to careless writing.

Pushed to it though, I can make a case for the "Willow was not really that important" arguement.

Remember when Giles says to Willow, "There are others who can do what you do. You just don't want to meet them."

Miss Harkness and the coven are just a phone call away.

There are probably others.
