I want to try out the new Whedonverse Buffy-Boards index, so go ahead ask me any Whedonverse related question. What does 5X5 mean? What were the names of the demons in Fray? What's Ben Edlund working on? What does "Shiny" mean in Firefly? Where do I get a scythe like Buffy's? How does Angel speak if he doesn't breath?

Anything anywhere in the Whedonverse. It doesn't matter.

But more seriously, ummm is there meant to be a similarity between the name "River" and "Reavers" in Firefly, or am I over-analysing?
 
The reference is from A Hole in the World when Spike gets impatient with Drogyn's insistence Spike not ask him questions.

I'm going to make a wild-eyed guess on the etymology of Reavers, and say it probably derives from the bands of brigands that used to rustle and plunder along the English Scottish border from around the 13th century till whenever. They were called Reivers. I believe Reive originally meant to rustle.

When immigrants came to the new world from the Anglo-English border region they probably brought the word reivers with them, and it became reavers, which my official Scrabble dictionary tells me means plunderers.

I'm thinking it's probably a word you heard often after the civil war in areas like Kansas Missouri when groups like Cantrell's raiders came home and continued with their plundering ways. This would explain the Firefly connection, as Firefly is often described as a futuristic western.

Disclaimer: None of this is researched. It's off the top of my head, so take it for what it's worth. I'd suggest Wikipedia as probably a good place to go for more info on the subject though.
 
No what I meant is when I first watched Firefly one of the first thing I thought of is how similar the name "River" (as in Summer Glau's character) was to "Reavers". Just wondering if there was any connection, you know suggestive links between sweet lovable River and flesh-eating Reavers. Cool research into the background of "reavers" though.

Sorry. These are secrets that must die with me. 😀

On there possibly being a connection between the choice of the name River, and the choice of the name Reavers, I'm not aware of it, or any place it's ever been suggested. Something to think about though, maybe.

I know one thing. I can hardly wait to see River unleash all her high tech instilled power in the upcoming Serenity movie.

Ok here's another one from Factory X. Kind of looks the same though, doesn't it. Hang on. I'm sure I saw one that was shiny and red. It might have been plaster though. I'll go look again...

Well, I think I tracked it down, but one problem you can't get it anymore. I can't even show you a picture because it was on ebay, and it's disappeared. They were handcrafted replicas. I'm thinking maybe what happened was the guy wasn't making them officially. He wasn't licensed by Fox. He's most likely shut down now. If they were the ones I was thinking of though, they were sweet.

I'm guessing you can only get those official factory crafted models now.

Ooh, ooh, thought of one...which films have benefited from Joss's uncredited re-writing or script doctoring skills?
I seem to remember reading something about the first X-Men movie and I'm sure that there must be many more...

Was one of the credited writers for the story of the Disney animated feature "Atlantis: The Lost Empire"

He is also reported to have done uncredited work on Waterworld.

Cordelia: I'm not aware of the name Xin Rong ever being mentioned in either series. In the transcript I have for Fool For Love she's simply listed as "slayer"

Near as I can figure the name first appeared in Dark horse's Buffy comics issue # 3 penned by Christopher Golden in 2000

OK I did a little more research on the Xin Rong thing.

Near as I can figure the name Xin Rong first appeared in an issue of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Spike and Dru comics called All's Fair in December of 2000.

It's credited to 2 non-official unwhedonverse names Christoper Golden and Eric Powell. I believe Golden has written Buffy related books, apparently comics, and I believe he co-wrote an animated project with Amber Benson.

The story of All's Fair seems to concern the chinese slayer's (who they call Xin Rong) father sending his 3 warrior sons after Spike. Apparently they catch up with him in St. Louis during the world's fair, and mayhem ensues.

I do not believe the Buffy comics are considered canon. If Joss ever offered an official authorization of the name Xin Rong, I can't find any evidence of it. Fans however seem to accept the name, and often use it when they refer to the chinese slayer.

I finally got the answer to this question in a PM (Thanks Kindred)

Apparently it's a 64 Daytona. I'd never even heard of a 64 Daytona.

No problem and thanks for trying to find out for me. My interest comes from always having loved Studebakers, but not being able to get a good enough still frame of the show to identify it beyond all reasonable doubt.

See, the 1964 Studebaker Daytona's and '65's are very similar but that the '65s were an effort at a "more sporty" appearance and are predomanently two door "cruisers". There were plenty of two door '64s, but it's almost immpossible to find a four door '65.
