This is probably not news to anyone now but it seemed a shame to not mark the passing of this great actor with a thread dedicated to him.

Don S. Davis, best known as Major General George Hammond of Stargate SG-1 died on June 29th of a massive heart attack.

I have to say that I was really shocked to read this news. I read it first thing Monday morning so not the best way for a Stargate fan to start his week.

There are more details at GateWorld as well as a tribute to him and his time on Stargate.

R.I.P. General Hammond.

I haven't watched any of the "Stargate" programs in some time, but I always Mr Davis in his role there and in anything else that I saw him in. A always impressed me as a craftsman in his trade, and, whatever the role he played, his performance was always good. He's one more actor of the old school who will be missed by his fans.

I heard this a few days ago on a scifi board I belong to. It took a couple of days to sink in.

He was one of the greatest characters in the show, the perfect father figure for SG-1, one of the most, if not the most believable military men on modern television.

When he and Jack left the show, it felt like the old spirit of the show 'died' and the show became something else altogether. It just wasn't the same. But with the DVD movies I thought we'd have a chance to see him back again, and we will in Continuum but thats it 🙁.

Continuum is going to be a lot harder to watch now, for me anyway. Knowing that is the last time we will ever see Hammond as part of the Stargate universe will definitely add a whole new depth to the movie.

He was sorely missed from the later seasons of SG-1.

Ditto, been watching Stargate for over 10 years now, it'll never be right without Hammond of Texas there with them.
That's sad. I used to watch a lot of Stargate when I was younger (you know, the original episode, before they let everyone of the original ones either die or go away or whatever) so I can say it was part of my growing up.

yeah, i've been watching that show forever too. i grew up watching Hammond and his SGC.
Aww, that is such a shock!! I loved General Hammond!! He was such a great character on the show!!

I watched Continuum last night (great movie, by the way) and I have to say that it was really hard seeing Hammond in new scenes so soon after Don's death has been reported. You find yourself almost forgetting while he is onscreen. Still strange to think that this movie will have been his last ever project.

General Hammond and Coach Charlie Collins in A League of Their Own...a sad day to hear this news. Farewell, Gen. Hammond. And we thank you.

My mom used to watch SG-1 *all* the time, I kind of liked it too and watched dozens of episodes with her...I liked him, I thought he was very good in his role. I've seen him in lots of other things he's been in to (including The X-Files) and I always thought he was a good actor. Tis sad.
