Going off to war...

Just found out yesterday that my Calculus teacher of last year is going off to Iraq with his reserve unit for a year. He was *the* best teacher I have ever had. He taught my pre-cal class my junior year, then last year I had him for Calculus and Physics. That man is a genius beyond reason - he taught pre-cal, algebra, calculus, college algebra, and physics. All in a day's work, I guess. He was the only teacher I ever had that made math make since. I *loathed* calculus with a passion, but he made the class such a joy. I just hope he keeps safe over there. My family's got history with military (ex-navy grandpa, ex-marine uncle, and another uncle currently in the army), but I've never experienced having someone you know well being sent off to war. Anyone else out there have a more personal connection to the war over in Iraq? Think it'd be too much of an inflamatory topic to start a thread over our own personal reasons for/against war in Iraq?...
 
I'm right there with ya, xtrustno1x.

My kid brother, Javier, is in the Army and has been serving in Iraq almost from the beginning of the war. I practically raised that kid, and It bothers me that he's there sometimes...but I know deep down that he'll be alright.

I don't agree with the war....but I am nevertheless proud of, and appreciate, my brother and the rest of the men and women out there who are forced to risk their lives.

Here's a link to some pictures from my brother's MSN group, the 1ST PLATOON NINJAS. The pictures are all from Iraq, mostly of him and a couple of his crew, as well as a few location pics. My bro is the tall, tanned and slim Hispanic dude with the thin Adolf Hitler moustache....lol. Did I mention I was proud of him? 😀

And as far as this being an inflammatory topic, xtrustno1x, well...it is a VALID topic of discussion that affects a lot of people, and if you or anyone else here want to discuss it and let your feelings be known, you have every right to do so. It doesn't necessarily have to be inflammatory...these things CAN be discussed in a passionate, yet rational, civil, and intelligent manner....without degenerating into a mudslinging bash 'em up.

I say, discuss away. It's good for the soul.

I agree - war can be discussed without it being reduced to..well..a war. It's been my experience here in Texas that war is something you don't disagree with. Neither is Bush. I've come accustomed to coming online and talking about politics and the like that my fellow *cough* residents of Texas regard with conservatism and Bush-loving. I'm just glad I wasn't born here...

When I saw the pics your brother has posted, the first word that came to mind was "sweltering". I have no right to complain about the weather here anymore. At least we have the luxury of wearing less clothing...

I remember the first death over in Iraq that I really felt a connection (albeit, a silly one) to. The name has left me now, but he was one of the first men to do over there during the first courses of the war. But, when I saw his name in the paper, I could have sworn it sounded familiar. Sure enough, after watching a re-run of some concert MTV put together for the troops, there the young man was, talking to Kid Rock. Stuff like that just sends you reeling back down to earth. The fact that we're all so...mortal...

Thats an excellent point, and one that I agree with.

There was a few months where we were worried that my brother was going to be sent to Iraq. He is not in the forces, but a Civil Commissioning Engineer for Siemens. They are being called in to re-build things and if he was sent he could not turn it down - short to resigning which he would have as he gets head hunted by other companies.

But thankfully we were told last month that he is going to remain in Spain but getting moved to Seville.
 
Whilst I may not necessarily agree with the reasons behind this war (without UN sanction) I most certainly have the utmost respect and admiration for the men and women who are out there putting their necks on the line - both military and civilian. I hope they all come out of it safely and this troubled country finds a peaceful, democratic resolution to its problems.
 
My brother's friend has been to and from Iraq several times. It must of been about a year ago he first went and he just pops back from time to time. He's a cool guy and helps me insult my brother ^_^

Anyway, I'm against the war I'm not exactly gonna hold it against the people that are fighting it. So I hope your teacher is okay and survives.
