GOODBYE IOWA

The Good;
Some great acting from Marc Blucas as Riley comes apart. Love Buffy's rallying speech in her sushi pyjamas and Riley recognising Spike.

The Bad;
A pretty dull episode in many ways, Adam is a stupid enemy. I always said that the more Joyce in an ep the better it is, well, the more Adam in an ep the worse it is. The idea that he had a floppy disc player in 2001, really! Also the little boy he kills is the dumbest kid ever.

Best line;
Anya; "He was GI Joe for one night, it wasn't as if he was in The Nam"

Wheldon Cliches;

Character death;
Byebye another Initiative scientist and some poor MP

Shot;
No but Riley threatens one of Willy's patrons with his pistol.

Tied up;

Knocked out;

Women good/men bad;

Jeez!;
Cutting the demons arm off, nice!

Kinky dinky;
Trying to remain inconspicuous Xander tried to kiss Buffy.

Calling Captain Subtext;
Buffy, Willow and Anya spend the night in bed together. Amazed if the slashficcers didn't make great play of that! Upon seeing the Initiative Xander asks if he can have sex with Riley too. So, why does Tara ruin Will's demon hunting spell? One day we'll find out. Spike comments that Buffy has tragic taste in men, foreshadowing indeed.

Guantanamo Bay;
The Initiative are very brazen, charging around in Humvees, guns blazing. Buffy hits Willy but at his own request, the last time he'll be seen in the series.

Scoobies to the ER;
Riley goes cold turkey and gets stabbed.

Where's Dawn?

Missing scenes;

Apocalypses; 5,

Questions and observations;
Giles still has his Mark of Eyghon tattoo, you'd think he'd want rid of it? In the scene where Riley and Buffy meet at the murder site the camera goes very funny in places, going octagonal? Spike says he has a cousin who married a Privlops demon but like most of what Spike says he's probably lying.

Marks out of 10; 6/10 Adam is going to drag the scores down for the rest of the season.

Haha, Buffy's speech in sushi pyjamas was so funny. I laughed so hard! 😀

And yeah, Adam wasn't the best enemy in Buffy.

Oh yeah, after Riley Buffy's taste in man is really tragic haha 😀 sorry, some Spuffy hating again.

6/10 for this one.

I also love the pyjamas speech.
But I always thinks it would have been so much funnier if she just had done the speech in her pj's like it was nothing to it.

Now with Buffy's last line I get the feeling of being told by the writers how funny it was. Which isn't necessary, I got that anyway. It's brilliant actually.

Don't know though... probably the last line was supposed to be the real joke but it keeps bugging me a little.

/SK

Really? Willy is gone? 🙁

It's not so good episode. But it gave me some Briley love. Buffy already showed how much she cares about him. SMG was cute in the white gown, though. 😉

See you tomorrow in This Year's Girl and Who Are You? discussion. /me gets excited. 😀

I didn't know this was the last time we see Willy 🙁

Buffy in her sushi pjs...LOL.

A pretty poor episode though. 5/10.

Being honest here, I was curious about how they would develop Adam's character. Riley going crazy was surprising too. The drugs/chemicals explaination was meh. I was expecting something more surprising, like part of him not being human and more akin to Adam. Call me very imaginative but when Tara hide the magic powder(potion?) under the bed I was wondering if knew something about everything that was going on(DAMN I WAS WRONG!).

Giles waking up and the girls watching that cartoon hahaha! Really great scene. Buffy speech too =P

The showdown at the end in the Iniative, awesome scene! Sure the floppy disk part was kinda cheesy but I was intrigued still by what would happen with all this. Buffy got thrown around like a sack of potatoes! And can Forestt be more annoying?

Overall, good episode! I'm not like most peoples here, I actually like season 4, Adam isn't the best villain(it gets kinda lame in a few later episodes) but was still interesting.

Again with the bad season 4 eps. It's not so much that I hate Adam a lot... I actually think he's a pretty cool concept that wasn't so-well executed. But I just *cannot* stand Riley! Hmf.
I love how Tara is so eager to spend time with Willow.

- Spike mocks Buffy's taste in men. Watch what you're saying, Spike, you're gonna be Buffy's next bad taste.

- Willow thinks that Riley can't lie. Little do you know about Riley, Will.

- Giles: Absolutely not! I will not squat in that dank hole.

Spike: What, it was good enough for me, but you're above it all?

Giles: Precisely.

I get Spike being rude. But Giles? Xander is standing right in front of you. I've always known that Giles had no respect for Xander. 🙁

- Poor Riley. Maggie was like a second mother to him, it's hard when you discover that your minatory betrayed your trust "“ see Buffy in Helpless when Giles betrayed her.

- Now Riley feels betrayed by Buffy. Two shocks at once. Maggie was lying to him, hiding the fact that she was planning to kill Buffy. Buffy was lying to him, hiding Spike all that time from him.

- Riley: Buffy, what is this? You're hiding an H.S.T.?

Xander: Why don't you just back off and let her ask the questions, Jack? Your boss just tried to make monster food out of her.

You tell him, Xander!

- I know many fans hate Riley, but I actually feel so bad for him here. His whole life, his purpose, everything he believed in, all was a lie. Maggie lied to him all his life. I can understand how reluctant he was to believe Buffy and Giles.

- The Scoobies in Xander's basement? So much love for that scene!

- Buffy telling Giles and Anya not to make scenes from her parents' marriage "“ the Giles/Anya fans can use that as subtext. Apparently, Xander's parents weren't making those scenes that night.

- I'm curious about why Buffy would think of Riley as Mr. Normal when she knew that he worked in the Initiative. He's not normal.

- Anya: So dump him. But you can't have Xander!

Buffy: I'll try and remember that.

She won't remember that in season 8. 🙂

- I love Buffy's Yummy Sushi PJs! I also love Xander's ducky PJs from S8.

- I love Riley defending Buffy to Forrest, even though he'd been too shocked earlier he couldn't believe her when she said that Maggie was trying to get her killed.

- The Willow/Tara conversation, just exchange spells with sex and there you have it. 🙂

- Is this the last time we see Willy?

- The scene between Buffy and Riley at Willy's shows clearly that Buffy and the Scoobies aren't as black and white as some believe. Riley is clearly seeing the whole situation in black and white, but not the Scoobies.

- Poor Riley, his whole world crumbling before him. This is a very good Riley episode. That scene with the old woman at Willy's bar is so powerful.

- "Can I have sex with Riley, too?" "He (Angel) is a very attractive guy." "He's (Spike) compact but well muscled." Xander is in love with all of Buffy's boyfriends. *goes to read a Spander fic!*

- Wow, Riley pushing Willow roughly aside. I forgot about that, but Riley gets really aggressive when he's in a hurry.

- There's an icon someone made about Xander watching Buffy's back when they're going into the Initiative. I really love it. There should have been more Buffy/Xander teaming against evil. Like in high school years and briefly in S7. And of course, S8.

- The scientists weren't just experimenting on demons, they were also drugging their soldiers making them more than humans. Super powerful beings. You know, if Riley still kept those powers, he and Buffy would have been fine and dandy right now, probably with a few babies as well. Which sucks to think about, I really don't like the idea that Buffy needs someone exactly like her, only male, so she could be happy.

- The worst humiliation ever is when you were on top and suddenly you sank so low, lost others respect and were looked down on. Poor Spike.

- "You know, I don't generally like to kill humans - but I've learned it pays to be flexible in life." As Buffy grows up more, I think she'll get flexible concerning killing humans. Especially when said humans are against her now in S8.

- Riley blaming Buffy for breaking the security monitors, which is interesting. When he's with her, he's upset with her and blaming her for something she'd got nothing to do with. But when he's NOT with her, he defends her to his friends and is worried about her.

- Riley's shattering faith in Maggie, so heartbreaking. How he keeps defending her over and over to everybody.

- Xander's foolish bravery, attacking Adam and getting beaten down.

- The last scene with Buffy, Riley and Forrest reminds me of the scene in Normal Again. Buffy here plays Spike who wants to take care of Riley. Riley plays Buffy who lost conscious. And Forrest plays Xander, telling Buffy to back off, that he'll take care of Riley.

Yeah, last time we see Willy although his bar recurs. Interesting comment about Buffy needing 'someone just like her but male'. As her fling with Satsu demonstrates it needn't be male, hope for Faith yet
