The slayer is back in town in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Goodnight, Sunnydale, complete with a glow-in-the-dark cover fitting for her nighttime adventures.
In this new picture book, written by Micol Ostow and illustrated by Agnieszka Potocka, Buffy, joined by her friends Willow and Xander, has late-night adventures as they protect the town of Sunnydale.
“When the rest of Sunnydale falls asleep each night, Buffy and her friends are just starting their day,” an official synopsis reads. The beloved trio can be seen “reading ancient texts as their bedtime stories, or casting spells that keep the children of Sunnydale sleeping peacefully.”
On the cover, Buffy is seen sitting on her bed and using a wooden stake meant for a vampire’s demise to curl her hair instead. Meanwhile, Xander is seen sitting in a chair reading a book about vampires, as Willow sits in a circle of candles casting a spell, with ghosts watching them through the window.
In an exclusive sneak peek shared with PEOPLE, Buffy is seen, stake at the ready, above a grave that reads “Here Lies the Master.” Meanwhile, vampires Spike and Angel are seen fighting in the graveyard, as fellow vampire Drusilla watches from the background.
“C’mon vampires, rise and shine! Buffy still has homework to do!” the text reads. “Angel’s soul plays hide-and-seek, while Spike just wants to rest in peace. No cookies before bedtime, boys. Goodnight, vampires (or is it morning?)”
Author Micol Ostow looks forward to passing the watcher mantle to a new generation of Buffy fans.
“I found my way to YA publishing through the Buffy the Vampire Slayer editor at Simon & Schuster, who was looking for an assistant back when the show was still on the air and the very first Buffy books were just being published,” author Micol Ostow shared with PEOPLE.
“So it’s fair to say the show ultimately set me on my destined career path,” Ostow continued. “Seeing the ‘final girl’ trope elevated to superhero status — with intention, purpose and sincerity amidst all the absurdity — felt truly revolutionary to me. It’s such a privilege to be welcoming this adorable book to the Buffyverse for a new generation so many years later.”
Illustrator Agnieszka Potocka tells PEOPLE that working on the book was a “sentimental journey.”
“It’s thrilling to think about the joy this book will bring to kids and the adult fans who can discover the story again,” Potocka told PEOPLE. “I can’t wait to see it printed.”
The book borrows its central characters from the fan-favorite WB series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which ran from 1997 to 2003. The series starred Sarah Michelle Gellar, Alyson Hannigan, Charisma Carpenter, David Boreanaz, James Marsters, the late Nicholas Brendon and Anthony Stewart Head, and more.
The series centered on Buffy Summers (Gellar, 49), a teenage girl from Los Angeles who moves to the small town of Sunnydale, which sits on a hotbed of supernatural activity — and she has been called by a higher power to serve as the town’s vampire slayer, with the help of her friends and her watcher disguised as school librarian Giles (Head). The show marked a new era of horror and young adult television, for the first time seeing a young woman in a position of power in a supernatural universe.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Goodnight, Sunnydale will be released on Oct. 13, and is available now for preorder, wherever books are sold.
