Google Wave inspired by Firefly!

Not sure if many people know what Google Wave is, it's basically like a live chat emailing system thats done through cloud computing.

It's hard to explain, if you want more there s 8 min video on it here:

There's also an much longer [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_UyVmITiYQ"]video[/ame], which is like an hour and a half long, of the developers conference where they announced it and showed it off. It's going to be amazing!

But more amazing is that the name was inspired by Firefly. I watched the developers conference a while ago and was amazed when the main developer(who also developed Google maps) replied to a question with 'Shiny', which is the Firefly word for cool, what was more awesome was the whole room burst into applause, yells and whooping in support - which is awesome but I just assumed a room full of nerds, not the shocking they all like the awesomeness of Firefly

I recently started rewatching firefly and just watched the 4th Episode, where a young Simon asks his dad if he got his Wave, which is how they use the terminology for Google Wave, "did you get my wave", "I sent you a wave" and etc.

So I had to google it and found out it was inspired by Firefly
In these opening salvos the first round clearly goes to Wave, its name a homage to the science fiction of Joss Whedon's Firefly oeuvre (Google's 50 Sydney developers are big fans of the Hollywood wunderkind). A "wave" in the "Whedonverse" was an electronic communication; a Google developer described Wave as "e-mail on crack".

Also turns out there were loads of references at the developers conference!
Firefly connections

The name was inspired by the Firefly television series[20] in which a wave is an electronic communication (often consisting of a video call or video message).[20] During the developer preview, a number of references were made to the series such as Lars Rasmussen replying to a message with "shiny", a word commonly used in the series to mean cool or good, and the crash message of Wave being a popular quotation from the series: "Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!"[2][21] Another common error message, "Everything's shiny, Cap'n. Not to fret!" is a quote from Kaylee Frye in the 2005 motion-picture Firefly spin-off, Serenity, and it is matched with a sign declaring that "This wave is experiencing some turbulence and might explode. If you don't want to explode..." which is another reference to the opening of the film.

During an event in Amsterdam, Netherlands[22] it became apparent that the sixty strong team that is currently working on Wave in Sydney, Australia, use Joss Whedon-related references to describe, among others, the sandbox version of Wave, called Dollhouse after the TV-series by Firefly producer Joss Whedon, which was aired on Fox in the U.S. The development of external extensions is codenamed "Serenity", after the spaceship used in Firefly and Serenity.

How cool is this, there is no way this isn't going to take off, it's totally gonna be big, which means in a few years time the entire word could be referencing Firefly everyday!

Man, this is by far the coolest thing I've heard all year. I'm not surprised, though. Firefly is so popular. Pretty much everyone likes the show. All Hail Joss Whedon! His influence now extends past popular culture and into the techie world! 🙂
