Gossip Girl (The TV Show, Not The Books)

I'm surprised there's not already a thread for this (I searched). If there is though, the mods are free to delete this.

So...
I finished them all this morning. Needless to say, not as bad as I thought they were going to be. The whole bitca-ness of everyone may be a bit of a turnoff (I know it was for me at many points in time), but the relationships were actually the thing that kept me watching the show. My favorite was the Chuck and Blair relationship.

The TV show is actually not as terrible as the books are (the books were why I didn't want to watch the show). The books are pretty boring and pointless, and I was getting tired of how Von Ziegesar kept on going on and on about what brand of clothes and shoes they were wearing; it was getting really irritating, as was the Nate/Blair/Serena love triangle in the books that's thrown out the window on the show (which I liked them doing and congratulate them on!) Plus, Kristen Bell's in it, as is Michelle Trachtenberg, which makes me pretty happy.

Well Kristen Bell isn't exactly in it, just her voice but I guess we have to take what we can get, lol.
I kinda watch it...I originally tuned in for Blake Lively, because I used to have a huge thing for her (that's kind of over) but now I've just gotten into the habit of watching it. It's not too bad a show.

I used to like Chuck and Blair but I've really grown to despise them. They're storyline is good, but as people you can basically safely call them evil. They're the most self-centered and manipulative characters on the show, and even though they supposedly love each other they won't be together. Lamest thing ever. After that episode where they talked about "the game" and such nonsense I was completely over caring about them as characters. Ugh.
 
*Sigh* I'm depressed to say I watch this, I don't know why, its everything that I should hate about shows Give me a Cylon to frack any day... but this... is a mystery.

Perhaps due to the rather easy to *Cough* download, its everywhere, TV is rather slow to catch up to the Americans here in Oz so why not.

Honestly I can't say a positive because just when I start liking a character they then make them completely un-likable... Yes Jenny is a talented designer... oops now she's a bitch... lol

But still even though its hard to admit it, I'll continue to watch.
 
I like the show not seen season 2 as it has not been shown in UK yet. I love chuck but I do perfer the book 'cause chuck is bi and thats just so much hotter.
 
I love love love love GG. I saw the dvdbox in shop and it looked so glamorous that I got it and it's really very good 😀. I only saw S1 though, since yeah I prefer watching it on dvd AND S2 isn't on channels here yet...
 
I love GG, it's so good. The characters are so entertaining.

Anyone that's thinks it's superficial clearly hasn't watched enough of it!

I watch it and I do admit I'm pretty hooked. The show is pretty much all about Chuck and Blair for me. Love them both individually, they are by far the best characters on the show and as a couple, or nearly a couple, well they are so OTP it hurts. They are exactly what awesome TV couples are made of for me. Yeah its a bit of a guilty pleasure as far as shows go but its not crap guilty pleasure you know? it definately has a wittyness and such, enough to where I'm not embarassed to admit I watch it and enjoy it.

I love Gossip Girl. I have not read a single book and I don't intend to. I think they strayed quite a bit from the books after the first one. I read some book summaries and found that I prefer the tv storylines much better.

I am a huge fan of Chuck. I just think he's great. He's obviously very screwed up and will probably never have a normal relationship, but that it why he and Blair belong together. I'm a big supporter of the Chuck and Blair fan club! 🙂

I really don't care for Serena, she just bugs me sometimes. She's too whiny. I do like Dan most of the time. I absolutely cannot stand Jenny or Vanessa, and I think that Nate has become very dry and disappointing.

I love the clothes and handbags and shoes on the show! It's so fabulous.

I have never, ever watched it. But, after reading a very positive article about it in British Vogue (of all magazines!) I'm actually thinking about giving it a try. After I've finished Greek. You can only have one of those series at a time.
But it does sound like something I might secretly enjoy. I'll keep you posted ^^
 
If you plan on watching it, I hope you can watch it in marathon form on DVD or something. Gossip Girl is somehow more enjoyable that way.
 
Tried it out for a little while because even though its not the type of show I'd normally enjoy, the same guy who makes NBC's "Chuck" makes "Gossip Girl." You'd never know it by watching them both. "Chuck" is so much different (and better, in my opinion). Anyway, I initially enjoyed it a little as something of a guilty pleasure but I couldn't keep watching after seven or eight episodes. I think the thing that bugged me is how poorly written some of the characters can be at times. One minute, Blair is a bitca with no redeemable (or even human) qualities and then the next episode we're supposed to have sympathy for her characters because she's been nice on screen for five minutes. And it doesn't come off as the characters being multi-faceted, they just seem to be written entirely to fit whatever the next scene or story calls for.
 
I also hate how the character of Blair is written. If she's going to be an evil hobag, fine, but don't try to make her likable in the next episode. I'm pretty much done with the character, she's far more evil than good so I've pretty much stopped caring at all about that character. (I do like the actress though.)
 
Monday's episode was a letdown, I'd expected so much more. However, I don't think that *SPOILERS ALERT* Blair slept with Jack, I think her bulimia came back, because I was talking with a lot of people about it and we discussed how the promos are always so misleading, and perhaps it has to do with Vanessa and Nate?

Well, Josh Schwartz, was responsible for The OC before making Chuck or Gossip Girl so Chuck is the odd one out on his resume at this point. I really have to stick up for Blair for a sec though... if any of the characters on this show are badly written, Blair is most definately not among that list IMO. I believe her to be the most complex, engaging, and compelling character on that entire show. By saying all you see is her being a bitca one second and nice the next "5 seconds," I think you're just looking at the very surface of whats going on with her character, and Blair and who she is goes so much deeper than that. Her whole bitchy persona is merely a front, a defense mechanism she uses much in the same way we saw early Cordelia use it on Buffy. The real Blair is the girl that would remain loyal to Serena despite the fact that Serena is the true bitca in the scenario, the girl that under the surface loves her maid like another mother, the girl that despite being despicably pushed away would talk the love of her life off the edge of a rooftop because she would never dream of abandoning him... because she in fact has the biggest heart and cares the deepest out of any other character on that show. Yep, I LOVE Blair! :biggrin:
 
Well, to be fair, I did say I only watched about 7 or 8 episodes of the show but it wasn't just Blair. The same could be said for Chuck (the one from this show, not JS's better show with that title), and the younger sister (Was it Jenny? I watched it last summer....) was all over the map too. Blair was the one that jumped out at me the most. Maybe she's gotten better over time, but at least it the very early episodes, she behaves in ways that I just can't sympathize with her, regardless of what her character might be going through emotionally. I see the Cordelia comparison to an extent, but I think its different. Cordelia was better written, and Charisma is perhaps a more likeable actress because her character works for me big time, and Blair really didn't. Cordelia wasn't just mean. She was genuinely funny. And she came off as multi-faceted as opposed to being badly written because her character would say brutally honest but mean things, while helpling the Scoobies. Even at her worst, she wasn't anywhere near as bad as Blair.

Yeah well we can agree on Jenny, she can go crawl in a hole and die as far I'm concerned, her character IS in fact the most awfully written character on the show... I wouldn't even know where to start trying to explain what the writers could be thinking with her storylines.... Although I think all the truly off the wall Jenny stuff has happened in episodes you haven't even seen, not sure I minded her so much early on...

Its hard for me to really go into arguing the merits of Chuck and Blair's characters with you (Chuck being another one of the so richly multi-faceted character on the show), I whole-heartedly love both their charcters, and not just in a squeeing fangirl shipper kind of way, I truly believe the two of them are the core and heart of the show, the two most developed and layered characters on there. But with you having only gotten 7 or so eps into the first season, I can understand why you may not be able to see that... if you were willing to give it another shot, I'd say maybe try to finish out S1 and see what you think... character development can take a bit of time.
 
Serena was more than just a "bitca". She made a mistake and she felt truly, truly sorry for it and has actively tried to improve herself as a person. Blair may be complex but her "defense mechanism" is no real excuse. She's power hungry and more manipulative than anyone and rarely shows ANY remorse for the horrible things she does. She can be quite engaging as a character, I'll give you that, but at the moment her bad sides far, far outweigh the good ones. Hopefully she'll grow as a character and become someone more likable but for the most part I can't help but think she's just a pretty disgusting person and if Serena really wants to be better she should stop hanging out with Blair so much.
