They tell her that she's a piece of work. She is Adelle DeWitt. She can do many things that others cannot. She can suppress her emotions, for one. They say that she's a heartless woman. Even those that are close to her never see the real Adelle.
She tries not to think of him. Betrayal, rage, laughter, mercy, love - all of those are emotions that one does not expect from her. Even Dominic, in the three years that he stood by her side and worked tirelessly next to her, never saw those feelings show.
There was something about her sharp tongue and witty remarks that drew people in, but scared them off. With Dominic, it was never so. She wonders what he would do if he saw her now. Laugh at it? Shrug it off?
She sighs and walks towards somewhere that she knows that she shouldn't be going to. The majority of the Dollhouse staff thinks that she is going there for an inspection, but the watchful and observant ones, like Claire and Boyd, know exactly why she is going. They don't say anything about it; just give her worried looks, and for that, she is grateful.
She opens the door to the Attic and walks in, knowing exactly which one is his box. She really should stop doing this. If anyone found out, they would chide her for it. But she doesn't care.
In the clear, museum-displaying-like box, lies Dominic.
His eyes are closed, and he looks almost peaceful, as though he is in a serenity of bliss. She wants to open the box, feel his face. She doesn't want to be Adelle DeWitt while she is here.
So she does. She barely registers the voice of the machine telling her that she is guaranteed full access. All that she can see is the lid sliding off, and now, she can touch him.
As though that would help. She snorts, and wonders why she would think that. Maybe it's a silly human notion in the back of her mind.
She comes here for answers. Answers to her own conflicting emotions, answers to secrets. Answers to what she's going to do now that he's gone.
He's such an idiot. If he hadn't shot her while Topher was prepping him for the Attic, she would've shown him mercy. She wonders if he knew that. She wonders if him shooting her is his last, desperate attempt to tell her something. She wonders if he didn't know and just shot her because he needed to accomplish something; give her something to remember him by before he was gone.
Because he is worse than dead, really. She would rather die than live in the state that he was currently in. Any rational person would. But for him to be worse than dead - it was sort of a relief, to her. It was selfish, she knew.
She was touching his face, wondering what exactly it was that made her so desperate to feel something now that he was no longer here.
Three years by her side. Three years by her side and she had never told him.
She sighed, pressing her palm to the glass, and then the lid was sliding back on.
She gave him one last look before she exited the Attic, doors closing behind her.
She would come back here again at the same time tomorrow, she knew.
Goodness, she was pathetic.

A/N: I was originally going to make this into a really long one-shot, but I just couldn't write it out. The ideas are still in my head, but for some reason it's hard to translate to the page. *sighs* Anyhow, feedback? 🙂
