from the Washington Post

In 2007, Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid called his colleagues Ted Stevens and Daniel Inouye to a specially secured room in the Capitol where highly classified information was discussed.
Stevens, a Republican from Alaska, and Inouye, a Democrat from Hawaii, controlled funding for supersecret Pentagon operations. Reid wanted to put an idea on their radar, one that needed to be kept hush-hush not just for national security but because it was, as Reid’s aides told him, kind of crazy. He wanted the Pentagon to investigate UFOs. “Everyone told me this would cause me nothing but trouble,” said Reid, a Democrat who represented Nevada, home of the military’s top-secret Area 51 test site, a central attraction of sorts for UFO hunters. “But I wasn’t afraid of it. And I guess time has proven me right.”

That’s because official Washington is swirling with chatter — among top senators, Pentagon insiders, and even former CIA directors — about UFOs. What was once a ticket to the political loony bin has leaped off Hollywood screens and out of science-fiction novels and into the national conversation. There are even new government abbreviations. “This used to be a career-ending kind of thing,” said John Podesta, who generally kept his interest in UFOs to himself when he was President Bill Clinton’s chief of staff. “You didn’t want to get caught talking about it because you’d be accused of walking out of an ‘X-Files’ episode.”

But now there isn’t just talk.

Last summer, the Defense Department issued a news release with the following headline: “Establishment of Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force.” The mission of the UAPTF “is to detect, analyze and catalog UAPs that could potentially pose a threat to U.S. national security,” according to the Pentagon.

A few months later, as part of President Donald Trump’s spending and pandemic relief package, the Senate Intelligence Committee, led by Sen. Mark R. Warner (D-Va.), included a provision calling for the director of national intelligence to help produce an unclassified report on everything government agencies know about UFOs, including scores of unusual sightings reported by military pilots.

That report is due sometime next month.

In the meantime, ex-government officials have been saying some remarkable things. Late last year, former CIA director John Brennan, appearing on a podcast hosted by George Mason University economics professor Tyler Cowen, said it was “a bit presumptuous and arrogant for us to believe that there’s no other form of life anywhere in the entire universe.” And last month, former CIA director R. James Woolsey said in an interview with the Black Vault, a website that collects paranormal sightings, that he wasn’t “as skeptical as I was a few years ago, to put it mildly, but something is going on that is surprising to a series of intelligent aircraft, experienced pilots.”

Both former CIA directors were referring to Air Force and Navy pilot videos that have surfaced in recent years showing unexplained objects on radar traveling at unusual speeds and performing aerial maneuvers that defy logic when compared with what even the most advanced military planes are known to be capable of. The authenticity of the videos has been confirmed by Pentagon officials. Some of them were recently featured on “60 Minutes.”

“I’ve seen some of those videos from Navy pilots,” Brennan said, “and I must tell you that they are quite eyebrow-raising when you look at them.” He added, “I think some of the phenomena we’re going to be seeing continues to be unexplained and might, in fact, be some type of phenomenon that is the result of something that we don’t yet understand and that could involve some type of activity that some might say constitutes a different form of life.”

Interesting, but I doubt much more will come of it than more vague descriptions and videos that allow no conclusion. I tend to think there are other life forms in the vast universe, but I also think we'd better hope they're not visiting. Such an imbalance of technological capability tends not to go well for the more primitive people, which would be us.

You think humans would not be the more primitive, compared to the Alien visitors. They can travel to this world - we can't respond in kind, humans try to shoot down any visiting aliens, making humans the very primitive race. So far the aliens have tried to communicate, how long will it be before their spaceships of war attack the human aggressors. I just hope the aliens know it is the military who prefer to kill rather than talk.
Maybe with the latest American views of the unexplained about UFO's will the truth be told.

I get amused about the American reticence about UFO's. Paul Hellyer, defense minister for Canada under the Liberal government for many years, has a series of half-hour Youtube videos for everyone to see where the four races of alien beings are detailed: the short grays, the tall grays, the Nordics and the reptilians. Of these, only the reptilians are enemies. There is a branch of nuclear physics that states that some particles are paired off so that an event that happens on earth (like a nuclear test) can cause other events to happen as far away as other galaxies. This is why nuclear test sites are the most common sites for UFO spotting.

You can keep them, then. Canada always has seemed more open to immigration.

The Nordics, LOL! Sure, no one hates the cute aliens, especially the tall blond ones.🙄

So what you're saying is that we deserve to be killed off, for causing paired events elsewhere. Go, Reptilians!

I think the UK (and possibly Europe) is even more reticent. In fact, I've always thought the US quite ready to subscribe to the idea (perhaps it's relative).

Why does that not surprise me?

In fairness, the US is the one with a plaque inviting in the "huddled masses". 😏
the Nordics
...is a very telling phrase. I'm trying to remember the last time blond haired, blue eyed Aryans were considered white hats.

You'd have thought that if aliens had the technology to get here, they'd have the technology to cloak their ships.

My uncle is VERY interested in aliens and i find it quite fascinating too, but I don't think they will admit anything. Im not sure what the government is like there but its a big thing to come out and say, by the way, UFO's are a bit funky and we are looking into alien activity. People like to be arrogant and just get on with their day, thinking they are the most intelligent, best species. However I think this is interesting, they could have put their foot in it now!

These releases have happened before. I don't know if it's a distraction of some kind, way to get publicity, or because too many people are questioning the official story (I vaguely recall some black monolith in some desert recently that had people buzzing over it). It always ends up with, "Nothing much there."

I'm inclined to think that the military is more likely to exploit UFO lore to help cover up tests involving aircraft, though I certainly don't buy their story over what happened at Roswell (but I don't claim to know the truth of that, just that the military is lying, which they could be for a variety of reasons), and the "it was Venus" explanation that was given so many times is rightly mocked.

I do wonder if this time is different, though. Like the USA is fragmenting so hard in so many ways that maybe they'll try to create a bogeyman to bring us back together (and if it can restore the deteriorating respect for the UN, NATO, etc, and other nations having a serious go at each other to calm down, then so much the better). It's actually a brilliant (if not ethical) plan, though I would worry for those who claim to be "starseeds" and such.

Not saying I'm completely dismissive of alien and paraverse encounters on Earth. Just that I don't buy this, and wonder why so many assume they'd use energy signals and modes of communication that we'd even know how to scan for. (Our scanning for radio signals from aliens strike me as like some stone age tribe trying to scan for time travelers by looking for the smoke signals we'd use in communicating with each other.)

Assuming the universe is teeming with life then I doubt alien life would find us interesting or worth the bother...though I did read of one detailed UFO encounter that sounded so much like kids on a joyride messing with us (including how they'd evade military jets until pursuit was abandoned and then they'd chase the jets, back and forth), including contacting some family in the woods and just being silly as they were shot at (the story made me think that their suits that covered their entire body used some form of gravity manipulation which makes sense to me, and could deflect bullets as well as allow them the acrobatics they performed). Don't know what happened there, but I find it more credible than most accounts based on how nonsensical (but not dream-like) it was, and a shared experience, and yet scifi reasons today could easily be imagined (I think that incident I'm referring to happened in the 1950s).

I read something recently to this effect, that the technology we're using now does not broadcast into the ether (ie. cable vs. over-the-air TV), and thus we are no longer 'communicating' as much with aliens.

I'm not a big believer in government conspiracies, but I always thought "Area 51" was a deliberate dodge to give UFO fans a place to focus. Whereas I have always been suspicious of northern Maine. A big chunk of the northwestern part of the state has only private, gated roads. What's up with that? 😒

Pfft. Everyone knows Maine is the home to some Lovecraftian Cthulhu and those privated, gated roads lead to the alters from which human sacrifices are still being made to appease him.

I heard a recent conversation between some family members that are BIG into aliens and totally believe in them and other stuff I think is a bit out there. I know there are some people that are thinking this will open the flood gate and prove everyone wrong and alien technology is going to be introduced and this will change everything. I gotta say, while I could believe that aliens are out there and maybe visited Earth, I'm not sure any information released will be the life changing revolution that some people think it will be. We will see what happens though.

As far as I am concerned Alien life is real, that the governments are saying they accept that Aliens are real goes to show how silly they always have been.
The main problem with saying that Aliens are real is knowing there is a religion who says they are real. I just wish Scientology was not agreeable with my belief.

Any sign of a rabid St Bernard, a Pet Cemetery and a shop called Needful Things? If so, stay well clear...in fact, drive in the opposite direction. 😄

To be fair, the current position of the US is that UFOs pose no threat to US national security, and can be explained entirely as weather, owls and drunk rednecks. Admitting that the evidence indicates there might be more to that, or that military pilots and astronauts have experienced close encounters of the first or second kind is what, is still astonishing.

We'll cross the alien bridge when we get to it. Close encounters of the third and especially fourth aren't especially convincing to me, and I think government hoax or psychological phenomenona forms a credible hypothesis regarding most of them.

I take it AlphaFoxtrot that you don't believe the religious belief that God is an alien?
