Graduation Day pt2

The Good;
The final battle and the end of SDH (for the moment, at least). The chance to see some familar faces again and to say goodbye to others. Buffy and the rest of the Scoobies finally graduate into the adult world and if not exactly putting childish things aside growing past them. So great to see the kids of Sunnydale High fight back at last (although has this spoiled the survival record they were all so proud of in The Prom?) Snyder's introductory speech is a definite highlight. It's all terrific and I think we should all be proud to say that we graduated Sunnydale High, class of 1999
The Bad;
Are you kidding? Well, actually one thing that always bothered me was after we see a devastated Mayor visiting Faith in hospital he seems awfully chipper when briefing the vamps for the Graduation? Maybe the briefing the vamps scene was supposed to in a different order in the script?

Best line;
Willow; "Man, just ascend already!" just beating Xander's 'Good to know that when the chips are down you can feed on the girl who loves you to save your own ass!' Also fond of Oz 'Our lives are different to other peoples'.
Wheldon Cliches;

Character death;
Byebye Larry (although his death isn't confirmed until season 6, I for one had no idea if he'd survived or not). Byebye Snyder who quite obviously had no clue what was going on. We see Harmony bitten but we don't see her sired? And byebye the Mayor, Harry Groener will be missed, he brought a lot to the table. Glad we'll see him again a few more times. Also unless I'm mistaken Cordy bags her first solo vamp.
Shot;
Vamps with flaming arrows, great idea straight out of every western you've ever seen.
Tied up;

Knocked out;
Faith still in a coma and will remain so for over a year. Buffy also unconscious. A pained Wes asks at the end could he be knocked unconscious.

Women good/men bad;
The Mayor refers to Buffy as a whore, a nastily misogynist remark. Buffy says Wes 'Screams like a woman' and compares Xander and Angel to squabbling old ladies.
Jeez!;
Watching the Mayor try to smother an unconscious Buffy is awful
Kinky dinky;
Angel biting Buffy. The sexiest scene you'll ever see between two fully clothed lovers, once again a vamp feeding is seen as a sexual act with violence as foreplay (the second time Buffy has been bitten by a vampire but by no means the last). Willow loses her virginity to Oz, it's all so sweet. Their van sex proves Cordy's theory about danger being an aphrodisiac. Willow says that its the best time of her life.
Calling Captain Subtext;
The entire Buffy/Faith dream sequence is just one huge Buffy/Faith love in, especially Faith's caressing of Buffy's face and Buffy kissing an unconscious Faith. Face it, they love each other, they're meant to be together. And remember it's Faith who gives Buffy the secret of defeating the Mayor. Angel in his delerium also mistakes Oz for Buffy, THAT would have been an interesting conversation! Wes and Cordy's kiss is a disaster, one day they'll love each other plenty but not like that.
Guantanamo Bay;
Buffy gets Angel into vampface by slapping him around a little. Is Buffy going to let Angel drain Faith entirely or give them a bit of each of their blood?
Scoobies to the ER;
Buffy is taken to hospital for blood loss whilst Wes is carted away at the end. The Scoobs must be such frequent visitors there the staff must know them by name.
Where's Dawn?
Safely out of town with Joyce. However I think it's no great leap of imagination to say that the cat in the dream sequence is representative of Dawn. Indeed this could be the moment it's decided she's Buffy's sister rather than Faith's. Faith remarks about 'Little Miss Muffet, counting down from 730' which of course is 365x2 and it'll be 2 years before Dawnie shows up.

Questions and observations;
Goodbye Angel, he makes a fantastic exit. Again, what exactly is the Mayor's plan? He obviously believes in a sort of idealised vision of Sunnydale, how is being a huge snake going to achieve that? Also although this is referred to as an apocalypse it really wouldn't be the end of the world, we've had demons like this before and the world goes on. Also surely the Initiative/Military/National Guard would just blast the Mayor to bits? Xander's soldier knowledge once again comes in useful. Although I'd really have liked to have seen the hummus offensive.
The Mayor says Faith doesn't like to be cooped up, prison must have been tough for her then. Why should Wes leave the country? Would the Council really give up that easily? Shouldn't the hospital staff call the police when the Mayor tries to smother Buffy? There's a great picture of Wes in the Sunnydale High Yearbook asking 'Who is this guy? The first mention of shrimp in the Buffyverse. Anya refers to her car but then in 'Triangle' says it's the first time she's driven? The Mayor says Sunnydale is 100 years old but surely the town dates back to Spanish/American times?
Lot of fanfic based on the concept of 'what if?' the ascension had succeeded. Like the one where WR&H, the Initiative, Doyle, Gwen, Spike, Fred, Warren, Lorne, Tara, Gunn etc team up to set the world to rights, also fond of the monks sending Dawn to Faith as her sister, Glory killing the transformed Mayor in her quest for The Key and Faith killing her then being won back over to the good guys by her little sis' love. All time favourite though is Faith realising the transformed Mayor doesn't love her anymore so she goes to the Oracles and turns back time, even if it means she ends up in a coma.
Marks out of 10; 10/10 and no mistake. For me Buffy peaks at exaclty this point, it's still a wonderful show for the next 4 years and never jumps the shark but this is the best of the best and we'll never see TV consistently as good as this ever again.

And what a coincidence, it is being aired here on Sky NZ next week
This episode is heartbreaking for me. Angel leaving? He probably did the best thing, I mean I know he did, but when it comes to Bangel I really don't care what the best thing is. Maybe I'm a little selfish, well I know I am, but this episode just puts tears in my eyes everytime I watch it. When they are standing there in the last scene I'm thinking "You moroon, don't go, go to her and kiss her. And you? Go to him. Hug him, and tell him he is wrong. He can't leave". I'm so sad, and angry, but when she tells Willow she is ok, all that goes away and then I know he did the right thing 🙂

I just rewatched this episode recently and that scene and if you look closely you see the glint of tears in Angel's eyes. Before he turns and wallks away.
Great finale. It's not The Gift, but I almost cried just thinking of it. It's not about any characters. It's about high school. I survived. :cry:

And you're right. Faith and Buffy meant to be together. *ducks from Bangels and Spuffies* I mean, if Angel won't become human one day, Faith should be the one for her. 😉

Sadly, I think Faith had no idea about the dream. She acted like she had no idea about it in This Year's Girl.
Buffy said that she thought Faith has changed, but she was wrong. It's like Faith had her own dreams that Buffy always wanted to kill her.
Maybe The PTB sent the dream to her. But I always believe it's in the form that Buffy wanted to see. So maybe she does have feelings for Faith. *finger crossed* 😛

And I think Little Miss Muffet comment is about Buffy dying in The Gift.
Because 2 years is from season 3 finale to season 5 finale, right? 🙂

A little note on Wes and Cordy kissing. Gotta kudos to Alexis and Charisma. I think it's harder to kiss awkwardly than kissing normally when you're acting. They're great actors!

Oh, I've never thought about Anya and driving before. Thanks for pointing it out. 🙂

Angel leaving was sad, but I love the fact that we got a new awesome Jossverse show. 😉

I completely agree. Buffy doesn't get better than this. This is a perfect end to my favourite three seasons of the show. I miss the high school years! (Thank goodness for DVDs 😛)

The scene when the vamps go to eat the students and turn round to see the army, never fails to give my goosebumps.

Again, the pride Giles shows at Buffy not only defeating the Mayor but graduating.

Angel leave is indeed bittersweet, but I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. There was no need to running and kissing, if you ask me. They knew they would see each other again and there really was no point in delaying the inevitable and making it harder for them both...and me!

Like I said, a truly fitting end for a (imo) perfect three years of television and high school.

I miss high school scooby gang too :(

I sure wouldn't have minded going to High School with Buffy and the gang. Never a dull moment.
I think when Angel walks away it's easier on Buffy like that, had he said more it would have been more painful for her, better to have a clean break. I think Faith does share Buffy's dream and remembers it but she's just so mixed up she represses it. Her inner conflict in season 4 stems from her Slayer nature that is represented here, ultimately the Slayer must fight evil.

Ok, see everybody on the season 4 reviews board and Angel season 1 board

Ok, I think you made more sense. Now I believe Faith was in that dream. Not that I don't want to believe. :D

I always thought he never said goodbye because that would mean it's really over, and it's not. He'll always be there, not matter what 😀

That is what I thought when Angel told Buffy he wasn't going to say Good bye. I know why there wasn't but I wish there had been more crossovers.
I just watched this epi and I have to say it is a GLORIOUS season finale!

Buffy sacrificing her blood for Angel...risking her life for his.The ultimate exhibition of their love. Plus, Oh MY GOD!!! The sexiest BANGEL scene...i can't decide between Amends and this one.They did not need to do anything.Just that bite was so passionate!Poor Angel in his delirium we can see what he is truly longing for...

Faith and Buffy dream almost brought me to tears.Because of the 7-3-0 thing...I have read what it means and it's very sad.It is also painful to see a sad Faith.She seems so melancholic in this dream and also i think that's the real inner Faith talking to Buffy. One slayer to another. Magnificent!

Well the Mayor really grieves for his Faith.He even tries to kill Buffy! Lucky our boy Angel was there!

And i have to add...the blood of the Slayer certainly made him stronger. At the battle he handled dozens by himself!

Finally, the goodbye scene!!! Oh go Blondie!!!RUN to him!!!🙁
Her face expression says a lot. It says "i am happy you are alive Angel", "i don't want you to leave" , "i understand why you are doing this" according to my opinion.

Also Buffy's clothes rock!What a great way to graduate!!!Kick ass with your classmates' help!

P.S Cordy tends to fall for nerds, right? 😉 I am glad she and Wes decided that this could never be more than a friendship.

I love it when he mistakes Willow for Buffy. Part of me wanted Buffy to stay with him after all Angel was dying.
This was a great send off for Angel IMO, but I hated that this was the last episode with Cordelia, the show never was the same without her.

No but Angel wouldn't have been the same without her? Anya steps admirably into her (far too expensive) shoes and develops a dynamic pretty much of her own. I'm not sure what else there would have been for CC to do in Sunnydale?

I love this episode! I agree, Angel biting Buffy is without question their sexiest scene.

The ending is sad, although I wish it would have been a little more tear-jerky, just 'cause those are my favorite scenes. However, I think the scene worked perfectly for everything. It wasn't goodbye forever.

I for one am glad it wasn't, Angel coming back on Buffy or her appearing on his show is always a highlight

So true, though I really didn't like the direction Cordelia took in the fourth season of Angel.

They really ruined Cordelia's character in Angel. I hated that :(
I've just finished season 3 and this episode is probably one of two to have a really epic feeling in BtVS! From the moment Buffy tell the others 'I'm ready for war', and then you got all these scenes with both sides preparing. Really good build-up to the graduation scene. That scene was memorable! The speech by Snyder, the usual graduation music in the background, then the Mayor talking and all the sarcastic comments by Buffy and Will, lol!

I really loved when the students just all threw their graduation clothes and started to fight back! I bet the Mayor didn't expect that, haha.

Wesley being knocked out was hilarious :lmao: He sure changed in the last seasons of Angel!

I still think it was stupid by the Mayor(who always seemed to be a smart person) to follow Buffy. I know he's a big snake and all but use your head(?!) smart guy! And was it his human voice when he said 'Well gosh!'??

The ending was more sad than I remembered... Angel leaving, and the moment of silence requested by Oz! Joss knows how to end his seasons well.

Great ep, not as good as part one, but still vgood. Anyone ever wonder why Mayor wanted to be a big snake? Was he just bored? Seemed like more fun just being invincible Mayor.

Well I always thought the invincible thing was just part of the ascention, it was nothing that would last more than 100 days.

As for becoming an old one. Obviously he just wanted power. But they didn't really explain where it started and was he a warlock or something?

Well i remember becoming pure demon was his reward for building a demon feeding ground(sunnydale). Idk who gave him this reward though.
But, lets imagine he won in Grad pt2, what would he have done? Slither about for the next thousand years?

A great episode. Certainly epic. Loved all the Fuffy stuff! It was so cute!
I actually *do* think they shared dreams on a certain level. Just some were more dominant in Faith's mind when she woke up.

Sorry to see the Mayor go. He was so great! His feelings for Faith were cute and actually made me tear up a little. 🙂

The part with faith, I figure it may be a gesture of "we're all even now."Buffy didnt seem to hate her there even after everything that happened. You almost feel bad that faith blew it with buffy

I love it when Angel grabs the mayor, pulls him off her, and says Don't do that. Then when the mayor calls buffy a not nice word Angel throws the mayor against the wall. I always liked how Angel got mad whenever Buffy was in jeopardy. They sure broke the mold when they created the Angel character.

I agree, and I loved that too. That scene was so beautiful. But one thing I don't like how they're judging Angel because he drinks from Buffy. That was her decission, and she made him do it. It's not their place to judge. They're so sensitive when it comes to Buffy and Angel.

You expect if from Xander but not Willow who always supported Buffy and Angel.
