I just posted a thread about academic writing on Buffy, and in the book one of my tutors has written, she says that Joss said the scene in Graudation Day when Angel bites Buffy is one of the most sexual scenes they have done. I watched it after reading that and yeah, I agree. Pretty damn intense.

Anyone else ever thought it?

I think it is pretty obvious how sexually charged that scene was. Buffy gasping while Angel feeds off her, the way he is positioned (lying between her legs), how she coils up around him, crushing the tin jug in her hand and then how she snaps and breaks the table (signifying her climax).

I think Joss described it as one of their less veiled metaphors on Buffy.

I've always seen vampirism as an extremely sexual concept. Spike even brings it up in that little speech he gives about blood. The bite was...somewhat intense. However...I'd still say some of the stuff in Season 6 was way raunchier. At the time though, it was definately one of the more implicitly explicit scenes.

It actually boggles my mind that YOU of all people, Mr. Innuendo, doesn't see the sexuality in this scene.

Oh yeah, the sex scenes in Season 6 blow this one out of the water, but at the time it was pretty charged!

Yeah there's definitely something sexual about vampirism. Even back to Stoker's Dracula critics identify the sexual elements within it, something which I think that Joss also explored with the Dracula episode in the show too.

I didn't say I don't see it as trying to be a sexual scene, I am answering the question based on what was said.

I understood what the attempt was, but it didn't rate at all with me as a sexual scene, so my answer is now and will ever be 'No.'


However if the question was - 'do you think there were sexual elements to the scene' then the answer is different because of intent.
Intent and execution are two separate entities and as the opening gambit is about execution, thats where my answer comes from.

You know what, i totaly agree, also the spell in season 4 with Willow and Tara (with the body switch with buffy and faith) iv always thought that was very sexual and one of the most sexual sceans too.

Oh yeah definitely. It wasn't until Season 7 that they actually implied too much physical lesbian sex scenes and stuff. I also thought the same in Once More With Feeling during Tara's song when she's lifted up.

But anyway, back on topic, like Lindsey said, Vampirism is considered as one big metaphor for all kinds of erotic-ness. I could write a good proper essay on where that comes from, but I just worked for 9 hours, so I won't. I guess it's the close body contact, the pain, the extasy that's involved (for the one who's drinking, but I guess also for the one being drank).. All of that relates to sex.

Either way, it might not be the most sexual (without actual sex) scene in the series (I would say that award goes to Willow and Tara in s4), but it's definitely more implied there.

They're obvious to me now that I'm 20, but when I fast watched them at like 13 or something I didn't really get it. Now I see them all over the place 😉

Gotta agree with EB. The way the question was posed implied it had to be one of the all-time sexiest moments in Buffy or Angel. And even though it was sexual in nature, I don't see how it can be one of the most sexual scenes in both series when Spike is half-naked through half of season 6.

As you can see we cleared that up all ready.

But considering it isn't actually a sex scene, like those of Season 6, it is one of the more implicitly sexually charged scenes.

Ok, coming back to vampirism being sexual - I am currently read a (really long) essay about homoeroticism in Bram Stoker's Dracula. And I have to say it is the most bizarre thing I have ever read!

When I previously said on this thread that there are sexual elements in Dracula this is not what I was thinking!

It's really strange, all about how Dracula is supposed to be Oscar Wilde. There are interesting bits in it as well but...yeah, weird!

SMG said it was one of the most erotic things she had ever seen on TV and that it flew right over the censors heads. Same probably goes for the Willow/Tara "sex scene" in 'Who Are You?'

I dunno, personally I find this scene and the Willow/Tara scene sexier than some of the gratuitous sex scenes in season six. The fact that they're clothed somehow makes it more sexier than just "flesh, flesh, flesh" which becomes so expected it looses all of it's appeal. It doesn't leave as much to the imagination.

Sexist scenes for me were always;

* Buffy/Angel sex scene in "˜Amends'

* Buffy/Angel "˜Graduation Day' bite

* Willow/Tara in "˜Who Are You?'

* Buffy/Riley in "˜The I in Team'

* Spike/Harmony in "˜Harsh Light of Day'

* Buffy/Xander in "˜B,B &B'
