I dont see why people correct grammar online.

Well it acctualy depends a little. Let me phrace is like this.

As long as its okey to read and understand. Why point out grammar? We are not in school?

99% of people correcting others grammar is out of being obnoxious, petty or wishing to cause embarrassment. You are not my english teacher, I should be able to have a conversation or spread my viewpoints without the worry and anxiety of being hassled.

I mean, people have been at school or work all day. Correcting how I talk or write at 9:00 pm at night- it's the last thing I need. If you really want to annoy me, hassle me about the points I raised. Not if I used a verb incorrectly. Language or grammar doesn't always have to be so perfect.

Of course, I have nothing against say, a parent politely correcting how a child talks or reads.

I rarely bother to think about grammar, I try to check for spelling though. If I'm in the chat then I am even worse, and if the chat is busy then thinking about spelling goes out the window too or I'll type too slowly to keep up.

I don't mind people correcting my grammar, but when people say stuff like 'obviously it's wrong--how could you not notice that?' and be all rude, it's really annoying. I'm really picky about grammar but normally just let it go cause most times it's only little things.

English is not my mother tongue, it's like my third language so if you want to correct my grammar and improve my skills free of charge, go ahead, it's your time.

I let grammatical things slide although I hate the usual email/twitter contractions like "R U 4 real"? The only time I would try to correct something is if I couldn't understand what the person was saying or there was something ambiguous. My typing is more of a problem than my writing, so if I make mistakes, it may be trying to use the keyboards on the laptop and the tower computers - they don't feel the same.

[MENTION=11194]EVIL UU[/MENTION] I learned more about composition than I ever did in school from a manager I worked for who was an Estonian (and there is no connection between Estonian and English other than the days of the week) who learned French before he learned English.

Estonian is a Finno-Udric language like Finnish or Hungarian - there is almost no correlation with English.

Personally, I'm pretty okay with grammar, reading and writing as much as I do, you learn and it's easy to pick up. Spelling is usually where my downfall lies and is usually when Mr. P comes out of the woodwork to yell at me 😉

It doesn't bother me when people correct my spelling or grammar, though. Like I said, that's how you learn and I've learned a hell of a lot more through betas looking over my work and posting online than I EVER did at school, lol.

What's a "beta"?

I'm a frantic writer. A beta is someone - usually a friend - who reads over my fics before I post them online and points out any mistakes. They can be spelling mistakes, grammar, sentence structure, tense, the flow of the story - anything that can make the fic as perfect as it can be. People who volunteer as betas are very, very good with spelling and grammar and, as a fic writer for more than ten years, I've learned more from them than I did at school.
