I guess I shall preface by acknowledging that I am quite behind the times here. I still have a bit of catching up to do as well, having recently finished watching Season 6 of Buffy, with the final season still waiting to be seen. Though, I already have an idea of what happens, as I watched the entire series of Angel. I have a habit of doing things out of order.
I'm actually partial to Angel, though like with Buffy, I like the earlier seasons better, before everything became all dark, all of the time. For the most part, I like the characters on Angel better, though Spike's probably my favorite on either show. I like punk rock and gravitate toward characters that are a bit prickly. (My user name is a reference to Spike's Sex Pistols influence; though, I always thought he looked more like Captain Sensible from the Damned.)
There are actually a few things about Buffy that always bugged me, and I know I'm in the minority with this sentiment. First, and probably something that will ensure I don't make too many friends around here, but I've never been much of a fan of the Buffy character. During the stories about her relationships, she comes off a bit self-absorbed and whiny, and even when she's acting like a good person, she's just not that terribly interesting to me. I just can't relate to her at all. I think SMG did a great job in the role, and I think the writers succeeded in what they were trying to accomplish with the character and her story. But if I had to choose a character I'd want to hang out with, Buffy would be one of the last.
Now that a good portion of you think I'm a troll, allow me to continue. In the early part of the series, part of the humor had to do with the awkward manner of speaking of some of the characters (particularly Willow and Xander). It was amusing in small doses, but small doses was not what we got, and soon it spread to enter group conversations of everyone talking to each other like nervous strangers, even though they were supposed to be best friends. Besides Spike, my favorite Buffy characters are Giles and Xander. I like Anya quite a bit, too, mostly for her tactlessness.
Regarding Angel, I liked that show from start to finish, though there were certain elements that bugged me. While I was really happy they sped up the Connor storyline so we didn't have to deal with him being a baby for long, his recalcitrance when it came to accepting Angel as his dad was a bit annoying. I used to like the idea of "tweeners" (somewhere between good and bad), but this was another example of why I actually prefer the old black and white, good guy/bad guy format. Every time I thought Connor was starting to behave himself and do the right thing, he'd turn around and do something monumentally stupid just to spite Angel. (Hell, he was almost as bad as Pete Campbell!) Also, I think they went to the Angelus well one too many times. Overall, though, I understand the show got the network shaft and had to make due with an early departure.
Anyway, that's a Cliff's Notes version of my Buffy/Angel experience. Feel free to bust out the pitchforks (or not, preferably).
