Far-left climate activist Greta Thunberg was in the process of traveling to Chile this week for the 2019 United Nations Climate Change Conference, or COP25, when she got unexpected news – the event had been rescheduled in Spain after intense protests broke out in Chile.

Thunberg — who refuses to fly on airplanes because she claims that air travel is extremely damaging to the planet — put out a plea on Twitter, asking for help getting to Spain.

“As #COP25 has officially been moved from Santiago to Madrid I’ll need some help,” Thunberg tweeted. “It turns out I’ve traveled half around the world, the wrong way🙂 Now I need to find a way to cross the Atlantic in November… If anyone could help me find transport, I would be so grateful. I’m so sorry I’ll not be able to visit South and Central America this time, I was so looking forward to this,” Thunberg continued. “But this is of course not about me, my experiences, or where I wish to travel. We’re in a climate and ecological emergency. I send my support to the people in Chile.”

Thunberg concluded, “This [is] of course no problem. People are suffering all around the world, and I’m fine whatever I do and wherever I am.”

The move by Chilean President Sebastian Pinera to cancel the summit also impacted another group of extreme climate activists who set sail from Amsterdam on October 2 and only learned this week that the event had been canceled — after sailing for four weeks.

“After the initial shock and sadness the news brought, everyone came together determined to continue what we started: putting the climate impact of aviation on the international agenda,” the group said in a statement.

Just who is this kid with anyway? Is she really travelling by herself? 😳
 
It would depend on the 16 year old, and I remember one such kid who traveled the world by himself (maybe a girlfriend) but he had a very different background that had him mature and world wise, which I don't assume Greta is. There are a lot of dangerous people out there and even I would be careful travelling by myself. A kid I see as naive, even one in the public eye, makes me concerned, and having lots of money and fame may actually increase the danger she's in rather than lessen it. She supposedly has some kind of autism as well. That might make her fearless and determined, but I worry it might also make her vulnerable to those who would try to harm her, kidnap her for ransom, etc.

I am not attacking her. I am concerned for her. It makes me wonder.

Oh yeah, I would say without a shadow of a doubt yes. Not by plane or train mind you, but sailing across the world is a whole different manner. It's a very dangerous endeavor.
 
I travelled a lot when I was a teenager. At 17 I moved in with a loony host family in England and travelled all over Britain. I would have done that sooner, but my mum thought I was too much of a country yokel to go abroad, so I had to wear her down. Many of my friends went on interrails, and I would have done that myself, but I was too lazy to raise the money. Some people I know did volunteer work in Africa, starting when they were 19.

I think it is good for teenagers to get out. I don't think you need a special background to make you more worldly. If you never go into the world, you'll never become worldly in the first place.

And Greta has her dad and probably a ton of other activists travelling with her. If anyone tried to kidnap her, it would be frontpage news all over the world.

Yeah, but you said "a 16 year old isn't too young to travel the world by herself" not specifically that 16 year old. She has very special circumstances with which the average 16 year old would never be able to compare. Just look at the crew she is sailing with for pete's sake, and what she's sailing on.

But as I said, I think most 16 year olds should be old enough to travel abroad. Maybe not for months upon months, but most 16 year olds don't go abroad to meet world leaders.
 
It's different for girls than for guys (though anyone can be a target). Criminals do stupid things all the time and not everyone is going to automatically know who she is. Sometimes they do it for the sheer infamy, including murder. Even wealthy women on cruise liners have been known to disappear with alarming frequency (which the cruise liners report, of course, but also try to keep hushed up so it doesn't hurt their business). I wouldn't put it past a few opposed to what she represents arranging for a "random crime."

Still, I feel better knowing her dad is with her.


ETA: btw, I know that pic was chosen probably to be unflattering, but I find her adorable in it and actually feel like sending money to her. 🙂
 
Girls may be more at risk than boys, but I think my girl friends have travelled more than my guy friends. Isn't interrailing and backpacking a bit of a girl thing? My experience is that girls are very organized travellers.
