I figured I'd spin off the Cost of living thread with a grow your own one.

I know @Hunga Munga and @Octavia already grow some veg, does anyone else? I've now got my allotment so I'll be starting properly in the spring. @Vamp Tramp has it on her bucket list as well, so hopefully a few of us will get into growing our own food.

Yay!

I need to pick my parsley and use it up before it all goes to seed. Open to ideas! Bunnies and doggos can both eat parsley treats too. I also have a few species of thyme, lettuce, sage and mint all around the place to use. Herbs go good in the heat.

My new blueberry bush is starting to flower, its a different breed to my original one. I must remember to water it. The original is netted, but poorly. Im not sure how to care for my asparagus, its not yet 18 months old, but has some tiny spears. Not sure if I should pick them or let them go for a real lot next year?

Defo want to grow a chayote/choko vine but none I planted have come up yet. I have another starting to grow in the fruit bowl so Im gona plant that too. Its been tough with bugs destroying seedlings since loosing the ducks.

My baby nectarine tree has some sort of leaf disease. Im not sure if I will get any off it this year, but it did flower! Its only in its first year.

Got too many lemons and limes so should pick them and run them over to the pub before they rot off!

Currently we are only growing our own herbs in the garden box but I am definitely looking to start seriously growing in the next year. Corn, potatoes, cucumbers, eggplant, maybe add some garlic bulbs to the herb garden. I thought maybe we could grow some pumpkins next year as well. 😃

I just planted some pumpkin seeds out 🙂 just from a pumpkin I cooked last night. I will be surprised if they sprout haha something will probably eat them before they can!

Now is the best time to grow watermelon and runner beans. I've got a Carob tree to plant soon.

I just got back from the allotment, so many weeds. That's going to take me a while to clear, but once I have I'll put cardboard over it to help keep it clear over winter ready for spring planting

My grape vine has come back to life. It has been thoroughly neglected and I left the nets on from last year, as well as the vine parts I trimmed at the base. It all a tangled mess. Not much I can do for it until fruiting is done now. Gee thats gona be a fun job, not. Haha. I do hope I get some grapes this year though! They are super sweet, like lollies. I missed out last season. I must remember to harvest BEFORE heatwaves or I will be fighting off drunk bees again.

I have an apple tree. Don't get much of a look in though as the bugs and birds like the apples.

I've ordered some blueberry plants, hopefully they will arrive soon before the weather turns and i can get them onto the plot. I've made a start on the weeding, almost there with one section, aiming to finish that this week, and then cover it over. Need some heavy stones or bricks though to weight it down.

Im sorta worried to look in the orchard right now. After we got the frame and netting up, I neglected it big time. Its all overgrown but I can see blooms on the pear tree. Duno how many will survive! The net isnt the best but not quite bad enough to be replaced either. Almost time to start the water on that too. The rain that was supposed to come today was barely a drizzle.

Spanky is into hydroponics and would recommend growing your own that way. It's cool, man.

I have a pond and have been trying to get an aquaponics set up happening for a long while. Not getting far! Got the pump now though, grow bed next.

I have two little jars with taps on the bottom which I might get started soon with perlite and minerals. @ILLYRIAN do you think I'm too late to try to start watermelon seed?

No, I am, a lot will depend on the temps and the soil condition.
Do it! They go fine in pots 🙂 my favourite spot to put a pot of strawberries is near the front door. They smell wonderful!
Yes I'm going to do strawberries and raspberries in pots, as they can spread quickly and I don't want them taking over the plot.

Blueberry plants due to arrive Monday, which I'm glad about as weather due to turn on Wednesday so I can get them put in before then.

I was mulling over a mulberry tree but they are so messy and I really dont need as much fruit as they produce. It would just be a bug magnet here I think.

I have two different types of blueberry plants. One keeps leaves all year and is fruiting now, the other had lost its leaves and its buds are taking for ever to flower. I still haven't fixed the net on it.

Ate some endive when I was out in the garden this afternoon. Got a couple of baby endives coming along well too.

I bought two different ones, apparently having different ones helps to produce more fruit than 2 of the same or just having one.
