To be perfectly honest I have no trouble understanding why Firefly got cancelled.
Now if you're done throwing things at me let me explain.
They skipped airing the pilot, that was introducing all the characters and the universe, first, they aired the episodes in the wrong order and if the fans on the Done the impossible are right the show had breaks and could be gone for a few weeks before airing one or two episodes before going on hiatus again. And with having the friday time slot to begin with how can it be expected to hook people? Not many shows if any had survived such treatment no matter of it's quality.

As for why some shows live on forever while others get cancelled it's easy to be angry at which gets cancelled but it's all a matter of taste. If no one watched the so called bad shows they wouldn't be airing. But that's not to say that I often disagree with the decisions. I'm still mad about some shows getting cancelled.

I love Family guys intro when they returned from being cancelled.
Peter: Everybody, I got bad news: We've been canceled!
Lois: Oh, no! Peter, how could they do that?
Peter: Well, unfortunately, Lois, there's just no more room on the schedule. We've just got to accept the fact that Fox has to make room for terrific shows like Dark Angel, Titus, Undeclared, Action, That 80's Show, Wonderfalls, Fastlane, Andy Richter Controls the Universe, Skin, Girl's Club, Cracking Up, The Pitts, Firefly, Get Real, Freaky Links, Wanda at Large, Costello, The Lone Gunmen, A Minute with Stan Hooper, Normal, Ohio, Pasadena, Harsh Realm, Keen Eddie, The Street, American Embassy, Cedric the Entertainer, The Tick, Luis, and Greg the Bunny.
Lois: Is there no hope?
Peter: Well, I suppose if all those shows go down the tubes we might have a shot.
And just to be clear. I love some of the shows mentioned and I wish they hadn't get cancelled.
