Dad rock? Dude bros?

Take away the hits on the radio, listen to other songs on the albums and you'll find there are some gems. I'm digging their latest album.

Not sure of the hate for Chad either, he's written songs for a whole bunch of artists- Daughtry, Theory of a Deadman, My Darkest Days are the first that come to mind. I adore his ballads and believe he has a way with words. His style is formulaic, I love it.
But also dig the heavier stuff from early days. I do believe that their latest album has redeemed themselves for the No Fixed Address album (there were a few tunes I did dig though)

As much as people hate on Nickelback, whenever I've watched concerts in Perth, and I've been to a few, only two artists have sold out tickets completely- one being Pink, the other being Nickelback both times I saw them.
 
Nickelback just are not my thing. Find them bland. Don't look down at people who like them. Not sure I would class them as Dad Rock either, but who knows what that really means?😀
 
Mine probably had to be all of Skins lol.

it means my dad likes to listen to them. Lol. I've seen them in concert and they are a good show.

but... but... but... they wear jeans and have goatees ... their lead singers name is Chad (I didn't even know that) ... they have too much meat on their arms ... and there are like rules to follow

Acceptable subjects for rock songs: Teenage angst and romance, heroin abuse, depression, alien abduction, Oedipal angst, satanism, gender dysphoria, psychedelic experiences, alienation, murder, paranormal experiences, the Biblical apocalypse, etc

Unacceptable subjects for rock songs: Bikini pool parties
 
If were talking guilty music I would have to go with good 'ol Madonna as a guilty pleasure. Some music I love (80s and late 90's) and other music I am not such a fan of, but its the person she puts out there - always challenging perceptions. Very cool.

And then there is Kylie. I love the Loco-motion. My family was very big into dancing, and there is a bit that says even my little sister can do the locomotion - my older sister taught me to dance as soon as I could walk. Im quite sure there is video evidence of this but we lost a lot in a fire in the 80's.


And yes, I did the Locomotion while finding this video. And listening to it. Twice.

I don't think Chad can help the fact he was named Chad 😛
So following the buff trend over the last few years is a no-no? Most of the metal guys these days seem to be pretty buff.

Since when did Nickelback write a song about a bikini pool party?? What did I miss?
They do write a lot of songs about romance... Lullaby is about depression and suicide, Oedipal angst is covered in Too Bad, Leader of Men is about tripping on magic mushrooms, Worthy to Say is about pot, and Chad makes Christian references in quite a few songs. And those are only the ones off the top of my head.

Buff rock stars!? Inconceivable. Rock stars should look like stray dogs. I do not listen to anything that could be classified as metal. It is like my only no-no genre.
This is my idea of what Nickelback is. Too wholesome and cheery for moi. Not my world.

You obviously like them, and I do not like to make fun of people who are genuinely into their music. I am a big believer in the punk ethos. That means that since you play in a band, you are cooler than me pretty much by default.
 
Oh I forgot about this song, usually I skip this one when I listen to the album. First time I saw the film clip too. As I mentioned before, take away the radio hits and there are some gems. Animals was a wicked tune and I think they tried to hit the mark again in their Dark Horse album but never did.

Tell me more about these punk ethos. I need to take notes to be a better punker 😛 (I'm in two bands btw haha)
 
I am also on DIYstompboxes, a site for people who make guitar effects and they have introduced me to looper artists. These are musicians who record tracks then play against them so the music gets more complicated as it goes on. And look who they recommended this time:

The first looper artist they ever introduced me to was Teresa Andersson, a girl who moved from Sweden to New Orleans a week before Katrina hit. She had to learn to be a one-person orchestra because all the other musicians had fled:

YAS TASH! MY GODDESS! I have Jungle on right now. I bop to it.
I have had that tiny desk concert on in the background so often lately. I just adore that girl. I saw her TED talk and wow, just love her, amazing, spiritual, and not on the same level as the sheep of Oz society.

TED talks are on my tv heaps lately too. I might make a seperate thread cos I dont feel guilty at all for watching them.

The punk ethos is simply a DIY attitude to music. Kids making music for other kids to enjoy. It is the antithesis to the ageing stadium rocker. You pick up a guitar or a microphone without caring about whether you are good enough. Oz's lack of pretension concerning his musical ability is a good example. He just plays and enjoys it.

I like the punk ideology, but I have never been able to live by it. I don't play any music nor do I create any kind of art and most of the bands I listen to are super famous. Still, it is nice to have ideals.
 
I am a massive Aqua fan, though I do not feel particularly guilty about it. Lene is by far the greatest musician my country has ever produced. I got to see them live during their last reunion tour.

P.S. Lene looks amazing in David Bowie-drag.
