Gunn and Fred

The zero chemistry pairing - I am rewatching Angel, and slowing down from several episodes a night to one every few nights. Part of this is Cangel - early on, I have no problem with this ship but by the time Angel gets pulled out of the ocean, his obsession is just weird.

But most of it is Gunn and Fred. Individually, I like them - Fred is brilliant and quirky when we meet her, and Gunn is tough and funny. Put the two together and they become bland, predictable, and completely lacking in chemistry. I'm finding myself finally giving into the temptation to just fast forward through their scenes. There's no passion, no sexual tension, no romance, nothing beyond mild affectionate banter - it's like mixing red and yellow, and ending up with beige. From the time they get together in season 3, to the time they finally break apart in season 4, they have more and more screen time, and less appeal.

I remember now why I loved Weslah - it's really the only pairing that has anything going for it in terms of chemistry, character depth, hard realities.
 
They are probably my second to least favorite relationship. I see them kind of like Riley/Buffy, the obvious detour before we get to Wesley and Spike. (Fyi Riley/Buffy is not my least favorite couple🙂. But probably third to least.)
 
Don't you hate it when two good characters make each other less interesting instead of more?
 
Totally agree with the idea that there is no chemistry between Fred and Gunn. They are also in completely separate worlds - not so much at cross purposes, but orthogonal to each other, a mathematical concept Fred would be familiar with which means each other's life has zero dimension in the other person's. They do not move along with each other, they move at right angles to each other. What do a physicist and a street fighter have in common? Nothing. What enjoyment did I get out of this relationship? Nothing. How did I feel when the relationship ended (by Gunn sending the professor to hell)? Relieved that this mismatch wasn't going to continue as a ship.
 
Oh this was boring. if we didn't already know they were hugely incompatible, Gunn trying to read and understand Fred's proposal was just awful.

Also - that breakfast scene in the cafe. Never have I witnessed such cringeworthy television.
 
I'm totally in the minority here but I liked them. I don't even know why but I thought they were sweet. *shrugs*

And by Gunn I mean 'anyone ever'. 😛

Not a fan of Frunn or Fresley either- both were bland. Guun/Gwen or /Wesley/Lilah. 🙂
 
Personally I love Fred and Gunn. I thought they had plenty chemistry, they were a wonderfully sweet couple. Maybe there could have been more passion but I'm not sure why it would've been necessary for the show. I like their kind of relationship, it's just kind of there in the background, doesn't take up too much space. I wish the shows had more couples of this kind.

Maybe you need to rewatch it afterall. I thought it took up a lot of space. There were entire episodes based around it and because of it. It hardly ever seemed in the background to me.

That may be. I feel if it were in the background you would be indifferent to it as there would be nothing shown TO like.. the very fact you like it is an indication to me that it was not in the background.
 
Well I liked Fred and Gunn. There was a distinct Romeo and Juliet feel to them. It showed a softer side to Gunn that was sometimes lacking. I thought they were cute, I'm glad I'm not the only one. 🙂

I'll show you mine if you show me yours. I will say I really hate Groo far more than he should be hated - he is a walking cardboard cut-out, a plot device with badly stilted speech patterns.

I like Fred, but there is something very sexless about her. I can see sweet, but I can't see passion. She slowly turns from a really great character into a porcelain doll, and Frunn/Gurd is part of the process. The fact that Gunn is so protective does make it seem like his sister, really.

I agree - Gunn/Gwen - electric! 😀
Weslah - that was a pairing that really changed both of them, and they were hot together!

This! ^
She's just a passionless character; TOO cutsey and sweet. It's like every other character gets a chance to be sexy but her- even Tara (Tara blossoms in S6).

Gunn/Gwen- I think I just like Gunn in formal wear, but they had potential as a couple.
 
Illyria shows that the problem was never Amy Acker- who is a fantastic actress, the best on Angel by far- it was how Fred was written as a character.
Like a pure, perfect trophy for Wesley to win and Gunn/Angel to protect.
 
Fred and Tara are basically the same character, as was early Willow. They all play that sweet shy intelligent girl who needs protecting.
 
Noooo to Gunn/Gwen. Gwen was for Angel, Aaaangel! *goes and sobs dramatically in a corner*
