Gunn in Double or Nothing

Anyone else who through the most part of Double or nothing thought "Oh, God, did Gunn force some poor girl to fall in love with him?" when they talked about this "she" that Gunn wanted?

A part of me thought "It must be his sisters life he's trading for", but a part of me feared the worst. Then it turns out to be the truck.

Before we found out that tough, we have this creepy conversation.

FRED: Just one last thing.

GUNN: Name it.

FRED: Who'd you trade your soul for?

GUNN: That, that was a long time ago.

FRED: I know. But just tell me, and we'll never talk about it again. Who was she?

FRED: Charles...

GUNN: That was way before I met you.

FRED: You musta wanted her pretty bad to trade your soul.

GUNN: Huh, guess I did...

FRED: Just tell me.

GUNN: It, it was a truck. I was seventeen years old and I sold my soul for a truck.

What do you guys think Fred meant?

"Aww, you saved your girlfriend's life" or "Aww, you got a love spell put on a girl" or something else?
 
I don't understand how it's creepy and I think if Gunn really had traded his soul for a girl Fred would not have found it creepy either. It would actually be rather sweet that Gunn was able to love someone so much that he would do anything (including trading his soul) for her to love him back.
 
Imagine that you're living your life as usual. You have bad days, good days, maybe you love someone, maybe you're very lonely.

Then one day, some selfish little prick decides he wants to make you his. He's in love, he wants to make you happy. But on his terms.

He sells his soul to a demon to get you. A spell is cast. A part of you changes. You're in love with a guy you may or may not have liked before.

You might never find out about the spell. You might even be happier than ever before. But you won't be you. Not entirely, because someone else has changed you against your will.

To me, in a way, that's a lot more scary than the thought of someone slipping a sleeping-pill in your drink, or being sold to trafficing. Because you're not you.
 
I don't think it does, no. Specially since it's not what Gunn did. But that Fred seemed okay with it...

It's more a ignorance thing, I know, not a evil-thing. But the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

So many people read stories about love potions, watch love spells being cast on TV. They don't think of it in terms of rape or brain-washing, even tough it's something equally forced. It something exotic and impossible, fantasy.

Ignorance doesn't make you evil. But it makes you do bad things.
 
I'm not disagreeing that it's wrong...but it's the kind of thing that unless you're on the other side, the down side is not typically seen. I don't think it makes Fred a bad person that she wasn't shocked by it.

Nope, just ignorant.

I wonder if she would have reacted differently after the Jasmine-thing, if she then had thought Gunn had sold his soul for a girl. Then she would have first hand experience with being "brain-washed".

It's not like people think after reading a fairytale about a princess casting a spell to find her true love "Wow, that prince had his free will removed. Aweful". People don't take the time out to think about things like that.

I tough, have thought far too much about people being forced to do stuff they don't want, due to my friends bad experiences, the headlines, tv-shows with rape/cutl/brain-washing-themes, so I think of stuff like that.
 
Personally, I would be mad if I found out someone forced me to love them!
Just like Tara was when she found out Willow was making her forget a bad argument they had...
i really don't think Fred would be too impressed if Gunn had forced a girl to love him against her will at the cost of his own soul.
Just a thought....
 
He's Charles Gunn, the only mere mortal self-trained Vampire Hunter in the whole Buffyverse that can go toe-to-toe with most any Supernatural Being, what woman would need a love spell to be wooed by him? 😉
 
Strangely, I never once thought that Gunn sold his soul to make some girl love him. It just wasn't the sort of thing that he would do, not because of any ego thing as much as that I just couldn't see him FORCING anyone to care for him. It simply wasn't in his character.

And being a good ol' Southern boy, I could perfectly understand him selling his soul for a good pickup truck. A man's bond with a woman is just plain romance. His relationship with his truck is sacred. The only thing closer to him is his dog and a good shotgun.

Perfectly understandable.
