Gunn vs. Wood: Who's a better and more skilled Demon Hunter?

I'm going to have to go with Wood, just because he was the son of a slayer and was raised by a watcher who probably trained him as well.

Gunn!!!!!!!!....Wood was trained but to me experience is real education....Gunn has slayed way more Vamps then Wood which Wood makes perfectly clear when he first fights alongside Buffy

Gunn beyond a shadow of a doubt, based on what we saw of the two men fighting.
Look at the fights that Wood was involved in. The one in the alley, he took out one vampire. The next time we see him fight, again against a single vampire, Spike has keep him from being a happy meal on legs. The third time is his one on one against a thoroughly distracted Spike. If he had kept his mind on business, instead of gloating like an amateur, he might have gotten the job done, but once the trigger is deactivated, Spike makes toast out of him without half trying. Then, finally, in the big battle, if not for Giles, toast once more, which, granted, wasn't too hard to accept, considering the odds, but he was the only one in the entire group to almost immediately lose their primary weapon and have to fall back on a puny little 2 1/2 inch push dagger.
Gunn, on the other hand, goes about the business of taking out vampires and demons in a totally cool, controlled, professional manner. No gloating. Axe swings, vampires turn to dust. Even in his final fight in "Not Fade Away," when he faced off against a whole room full of vampires, he got the job done. Okay, he got pretty well chopped up in that one, but still, he left in one piece, and the bad guys were dust.
The way I see it:
Wood ain't no good,
But Gunn gets it done.

But Gunn had the experience of slaying, probably from his mid teens, and looking after his sister and friends on the streets.
Gunn is much tougher and resilient than Wood too.
Gunn was also the 2nd best fighter on Ats, Angel and Gunn, going to kick some vampire ass.
Remember Holtz little minion was reporting back about the fang gang, and she describes Gunn as a 'formidable opponent'.

Wood may technically be a better fighter because of his years of training and such, but Gunn is clearly the better 'hunter.' Being chock full of knowledge means very little when put against someone who has years of experience on the field.
It's similar to Buffy/Kendra, honestly. Kendra had more training, had read all of the Slayer handbooks, had done everything she was SUPPOSED to do, but in the end....Buffy was still a better fighter than her, despite going through less training, not even KNOWING there was a Slayer handbook, and doing...Well, let's face it...She wasn't exactly the cookie cutter Slayer, now was she? 😛
The point I'm getting at here is that experience and passion will trump book knowledge and off-field training every time.

It's close, but I would say Gunn because he's been successfully fighting vampires for years, and been protecting his friends and family. I always felt that Gunn had more passion, he would never give up or be afraid to fight no matter the odds

Gunn all the way for all the reasons people have said. I think Wood has something resembling a childhood with a parent, Nicki's watcher, going to school, and having friends. In between all that he was taught how to fight but Gunn didn't have any kind of stability. Gunn learned to fight to survive so he had to be good in order to live.

Gunn. He's been on his own longer and he's always been a leader. He was "raised" to be a hunter, where Wood was raised to protect himself.
Plus, I could never see Wood as a better anything, for I hate the guy... He tried to kill Spike!! (yeah, it's childish... I don't care! 😛)

Did you purposely pick the only main black guys in the shows.....? It just seemed a little odd to me. Cause they're far from the only fully human fighters to pick. The only thing in common they have with eachother and not someone else is that theyre black.
Let's not be rude to the thread starter of this topic, Gunn and Wood do have things in common besides their skin color...
1.Both of them were not born into a life that was meant for slaying/the darkness of the night (as opposed to a Slayer or a Watcher e.g. And they didn't have supernatural powers to help them in the sense that witches do.)
2. Neither was officially trained or taught as a demon hunter
3. Both of them had a personal grudge against vampires after having lost a loved one
4. Both seemed to lack proper parental figures and thusly seemed as if they had more or less raised themselves with vengeance on vampires as the thing that seemed to drive them on
5. Both of them chose to battle vampires even if they technically didn't have to. They found out about it and they chose to become demon hunters for the sake of self-preservation as well as revenge
The things that they didn't have in common was the Wood was more book-smart and that Gunn ran with a gang rather than solo. So in my book they had more in common than they didn't...

I was originally going to post that both fighters seemed equally matched but a lot of good points have been made as to why Gunn was better.
I think Wood's main problem was that he was too focused on revenge, he couldnt get past the fact that a vampire killed his mother and that seemed to hinder him more. He gloated too much and lost focus rather than getting the job done. Gunn, even though he lost his sister, never seemed to dwell on that. Sometimes that did annoy me because he'd spent his life looking after his sister only to loose her to vamps, but I suppose theres only enough room for one brooding character on Angel 🙂
On a side note I think these two characters are very good to compare, regardless of skin color. I think comparing Gunn to Xander, for example, wouldnt have been much of a comparision because dispite Xander's years in the field he never did learn any real fighting techniques and in fact Buffy wanted him out of the final battle in season 7.

Sorry if my previous statement came out as rude. It wasn't meant to be it was just my impression on the thread. I didn't see the connection between the two characters it felt a little random. I didn't say they didnt have other things in common, I just said that was the only thing I saw they had in common that they didnt have in common with other characters on the shows.
Excuse me, no need to be rude. I'm not on a high horse I was simply saying the thread raised that question to me. Taake pointed out their similarities without being rude. I'm sure you could have too. And I wasn't the only one who thought that and you told the other person to grow up. If you have something to say about our opinions why dont you post a reply instead of just leaving short little rude remarks.
