I can't really speak for Wes on Angel, I don't know a whole lot about it. I have a pretty good handle on Buffy though, so i'll give this a try....but I'm keeping Joss out of it.

In Buffy, she does go modern when needed....see that rocket launcher below? Overall, though, i don't think Buffy is comfortable with modern tech. because it is used by man to kill man. She's at home with stakes and blades because there is a diconnect from humanity with it....it's not the way we kill each other so much, anymore(due to the invention of modern weapons)

All of this post is just hypothetical, and maybe Buff changes her wiew on things in latter seasons, but I think she prefers relics (hehe) as far as violence doing because of the insulation it gives her.

The first time I saw a gun in Buffy, it was used by Darla. So maybe their is a gun equates evil vibe early on. Buffy knows her way around guns though...she seemed to in earshots ending when she popped out that Bullet, she's used that tranq. gun pretty effectively as well....she has a slayers aim, but not necessarily a slayers trigger finger.

She does not even use the 'flying fatality' crossbow that much, all to often with her its fists then mr. pointy, or even available environment. I think in the back of her head shes just very afraid of accidentally killing a good guy, or even gray guy...She sure took a certain act by Faith hard! I think she prefers a great deal of control in her slayage.

Buffy is a weapon so to speak, and i think all that ingrained responsibility has made her perhaps look at equalizers such as guns, as a bad thing. In her perfect world there would be no slayers, vampire or otherwise...I do think she does not like guns because of the danger they could represent and that once that bullet is released, you loose control of it.

As far as a trigger happy Wes...I gotta watch Angel! It does make sense though, for him to choose the most effective and available weapon he could, if thats the case.

I'm sorry this post wasn't more informative or insightfull so much as opinion piece, its just my thoughts on Buffys early to mid character, and it could even be very wrong.

Since Buffy's primary style of Slaying involves close quarter combat, edged weapons actually do make more sense than guns, plus, swords, axes, and knives are quiet, therefore would in theory at least, attract less attention. Of course, the same can't be said for a 5' girl strolling around in cemeteries with a 3' broadsword, but... As Jim Bowie proved more than 150 years ago, one determined, well trained man with a blade can be more than the equal of several men armed with guns.

That's not to say, however, that there aren't times when a good riot shotgun loaded with 00 buckshot or a heavy assault rifle couldn't be effective as well, under the right circumstances. Weapons are nothing more than tools, whether they are hands and feet, modern firearms, or stealth bombers. The trick is to know which ones applies in which circumstances.
