Most of you who know me know that I'm a huge Mikalah Gordon fan. She's from American Idol and Living With Fran. On October 17th her grandfather passed away. Someone opened a website where fans can leave messages for Mikalah and her family for support. I commented once yesterday with a letter I wrote to them. Then I left another message today with a poem that I got when my uncle died. I just received a message from the owner of the website. Supposedly, "I" was posting messages on the dedication page saying mean stuff like "get over it" "you have no talent" etc etc. It really wasn't me. Why would I do that? I've been a fan of hers for almost a year and a pen pall with them for four months. I almost got a job working on her official site.

I talked with the owner and she said it had to be me because it had the same IP address as me. Then we came to the conclusion that it had to be hackers stealing my IP address. So, what is the best way to protect my computer hackers and people stealing my IP address? This has really made me upset because that's so rude and cruel for someone to steal someone elses identity and post something so negative on a page devoted to someone who died. So help me out people...
 
It's unfortunate that this had to happen to you, being a big fan of her and then later being accused of something like that.
I don't know exactly what to do about people stealing your IP number, but I would recomend putting up a firewall and installing some anti-spyware software.
 
Like doppelgänger said. Installing a firewall and anti-spyware is important. More important is an anti-virus cause hackers can take over your computer through trojans (which are virusses). However, I've heard that you can emulate IP adresses with the use of proxy servers... but I don't really know what that is about, maybe something with more knowledge in that department can help out.

sorry that i can't be at more help then that 🙁 omg i hat ehackers.. so.. ARRRGH!! and who does that??? on a website to show support, loving toughts and well wishs.. i'm glad they belived you though!! ( when you are that devoted to that artist, why on earth would you do that anyways...)
 
If she's going by the IP address alone, she may be making a mistake.

As I understand it, it's possible for 2 different users to have the same IP on occasion. There are different reasons why.

I'm pretty sure it used to happen on AOL a lot. It may still. AOL isn't famous for fixing stuff that's broken.
 
It's not uncommon for people to share IP addresses (especially if you use AOL). People can mask their true IP by using proxy servers. The people running the site should really have some knowledge of IPs and install proxy detectors if they are going to take action based on IPs.
 
oh yeah i've heard that too(about proxy servers and IP adresses.... )

oh and so with you Buffy on the last point! if they are going to take action towards someone based on that they should kno something about it.
