...and been picked up for a full 22-episode season, what is the number one thing you would have liked to see happen by the end of the first season? Whether it be a particular issue resolved, a certain storyline begin to unfold...where would you have liked the show to go?

I really wanted to see Inara throw down...like...major throw down...not sure why...I also woulda liked for her and Mal to screw already...

AMEN! If they had actually gotten together...that would have been so rad. Seriously.
Not really related to your query, but, had the show not been canceled I think it could have surpassed Buffy given the same amount of time. You can tell that from the time he made Buffy to Firefly he had learned much more about producing and developing a TV show. So, yeah, I think judging from the first season, and how Joss likes to write, I think it could have been his best yet.

Itf might have even surpassed Star Trek. Love the ship and the flying in daylight shots.
Mm.. I would have wanted to find out more about Shepherd Book, and yeah, Inara and Mal, but I think they were that tragic never to be couple.

I would have loved to learn more about Book, but also River. I'd love to watch her develop, learn about her own abilities, learn how to use them, and eventually get better.

I would have liked to have seen more of Zoe and Wash's relationship, they were great together. And obviously, getting to know more about Book. There was so much more we could have seen and explored, those few episodes weren't enough in terms of what they could have done with a few seasons. Also, if they had been able to make a second season, I think that it would have been some of Joss' best work.

I wonder... did the "Serenity" movie include the plot points that Joss had intended to follow over the rest of the first season if the show had survived? Would Season 1 have ended with the "unlocking" of River and her emergence as... well, a Slayer, basically. Would she have dominated the story from then on?

Book and Inara were the two "mysterious" characters I'd want to find out more about.

if memory serves he planned to focus on her later, I thought he mentioned season three somewhere. It was meant to be gradual process. If anyone remembers or watches the commentaries and finds it, please correct if wrong
^ I think that River's story was one possible track that he could have explored, but he only had about an hour and a half instead of weeks and weeks, so he chose hers to focus on.

Yeah, the Shepherd Book story is what I'm most curious about.
Someone mention that there is an upcoming comic that would cover it though.

Would also want to know more about Zoe in general.

I met the guy who played Jubel Early, who's name escapes me, lol, and he said that, had the show continued, then Early was going to become a major character, but he didn't say whether he'd be a good guy, or a bad guy.

Richard Brooks?
man i wish i could sit down with Joss and ask him where it was going. because we all know he plans things out so well in advance.

i think, like everyone else, my main interest was in Book. he was such an interesting character and i wanted to know more as well.

I think if River's true powers had come to light late it would have been the most gripping TV I have ever seen, it was enthralling enough in the film but if it had taken even longer to reveal...

Oh yeah, I totally want to know what Book's deal was...

Joss said on the special edition Serenity DVD that discovering Miranda would have been the end of Season 2.

He also said (probably jokingly) that the end of Season 1 would be Mal dying. 😛 "The show's not called Mal."

LMAO Joss
I would have wanted to know more of the back-story, particularly the war and everything that came before the show started.

River was a great character. It would have been cool to learn more about her as well.

I definitely would have liked to know more about Shepherd Book, his backstory would have been fascinating, I think. River's schooling up until she was kidnapped would have been interesting I think, too.

And for pete's sake!!! Can Inara and Mal get together already, or what? Sheesh!

If the show didn't get canceled, I would say....

We got a movie.

Which was supposed to be the condensed version of the end of Season 2. So, we have half of Season 1 and the end of Season 2.

I would've really liked to see more of the blue-hand guys, and the gang fighting the alliance more. Plus, exploring River more (but not enough to spoil the movie) would be awesome. I really think Simon/Kaylee should happen not at the end of the movie, but maybe at the end of Season 1. I was thinking maybe the Season 1 finale would be the Alliance has finally found the gang, and is shooting their ship out of the air, and a huge battle ensues. Of course, Mal and the gang eventually get away, but it could be epic. Oh, and BOOK'S SECRET should've been revealed. That's my biggest complaint of the movie, btw.

I would have to say I would want to see more Simon/Kaylee awkwardness leading up to them getting together already. I was dissapointed that we have only seen one on screen kiss and then nothing in the comics so far because they are all before Serenity. I just love that couple to death. Really anything that I could have seen with that cast would have been amazing which is exactly why I am so thankful for the movie. I haven't seen Sean Maher in like anything lately and it makes me sad.

Like almost everyone else, I would love to see some things about Shepherd Book's mysterious revealed, but I disagree with the idea of Mal and Inara finally getting together, or at least not until about the end of Season 6. Considering how Joss handles things like that, Mal would either wake up the next morning a Reaver and try to eat the rest of the crew or Inara would have to stake Jayne.

You made me lol!
Like most of you, I really wanted to learn more about Shepard Book. I thought it was soooo rude (yet also very funny) of Joss to acknowledge that but still to keep the secret during the movie. When Book told Mal that he didn't have to tell him how a preacher knew so much about government operations, I didn't know whether to laugh or throw something at the screen.

I also would have liked to have learned more about Zoe and Wash. In "Heart of Gold," they indicate that they are thinking of starting a family. Wash had doubts, but Zoe implies that she might not wait for his doubts to clear up. I think it would have been neat to see how having a baby on board changed things (especially Zoe). I also think Wash's death (or possibly Zoe's, in that case) would have meant a lot more than it did.
