I'm a huge Dr. Horrible fan, so I'm going through Whedon's most famous work: Buffy. I'm in season two right now. So far the show has yet to "wow" me. I'm hoping it will eventually go from "enjoyable" to "BEST THING EVER". I mean, if Dr. Horrible was something Whedon made just to pass time during the writer's strike, surely his main creative project will be ten times as awesome, right?
My favorite character so far is Giles. I was won over by his attempt at asking that other teacher out to a "social gathering".
Also, Dr. Horrible is very, very similar to Little Shop of Horrors, which is my favorite musical of all time. Dr. Horrible and The Book of Mormon are floating around second and third place. Anyway, here's a summary of both Dr. Horrible and Little Shop.

/Seymour/ Billy, a down-on-his-luck /botanist/ villain, gains some degree of success when his /Audrey Two grows/ application to the Evil League Of Evil is put under consideration. However, he is constantly tormented by the fact that the assholish, sadistic /Orin/ Captain Hammer, a /dentist/ superhero, is dating the girl that he /loves/ is obsessed with, /Audrey/ Penny. Everything seems to fall together when it turns out that killing someone is needed to /keep his Audrey Two growing/ get his application accepted. He puts two and two together and realizes that killing /Orin/ Captain Hammer would fix both his problems. However, his attempt to kill /Orin/ Captain Hammer winds up leading to the death of /Audrey/ Penny, /through a long series of events/ almost immediately. Put into a heavily unstable emotional state, he /puts himself into an unwinnable fight with Audrey Two/ becomes a heartless, soulless, villain. The world is now threatened by /Audrey Two/ Dr. Horrible, all thanks to /Seymour/ Billy being consumed by /it/ him.
For those of you who have only seen the 1986 film, a would-be faithful adaption to the play, go check out the original ending on YouTube. Little Shop would have beat Dr. Horrible to the tragicomedy punch by 22 years.
