Halloween Season Thread: Movie Scenes That Made Ya Jump A Mile.

Halloween fast approaches tommorrow, and that means scary movie marathons for some.
Even though you may be a jaded scary-flick viewer, is there any particular scene or scenes that made ya jump a mile outta your shoes when you first saw it?


Me, I've been watching scary flicks since I was age 5, so nothing phases me much about them. But once in a while something does catch me by surprise, like a certain scene from my very first viewing of 1986's Aliens, where the character of Burke (Paul Reiser) brings his face too close to the container with the seemingly-dead facehugger inside.
When that facehugger lunged at Burke's face, it startled the hell outta me...as well as the rest of the audience (imagine a collective sound of asses leaving their seats and coming back down with an echo-ey thump).

Ok folks, let's have 'em.

I'm not a blood and guts horror fan, more psychological terror kinda guy. But let's see...I think when Nicholson buried that axe in Scatman Crothers' chest (The Shining) that was just...ouch. Startling, lol

One thing they gotta ban from suspense/horror films: cats. No cats jumping out of closets, onto shoulders, etc.

That scene in Jaws where the mutilated face floated into view is the first one I think of, when I think of scenes that made me jump. The later one with the shark jumping at the scientists head got me too.

For all round spooky feel the first one I think of is Exorcist.

The scene in Aliens where the unit first enters the compound had me edge of the seat freaked.

There's a reason the classics are classic.

I can't think of one off the top of my head... but generally when there's some dead body floating in the water and it suddenly opens its eyes I freak! And even if it doesn't open its eyes I'm like expecting it and my heart pounds a million beats per min. Then there's the bathrooms... whenever someone walks into a bathroom in a movie I get scared. They're death traps! And if they have a cabinet above the sink with a mirror on it... and they open it for a second... I always expect someone to be reflecting in the mirror when they close it again! I don't think scary movies scare me as such... I think it's my sheer paranoia. Go figure!

Although, Frenchy and I watched Psycho the other night with some friends and it was so funny. I really expected it to be scary but what's with the scary music when all they're doing is driving their car? I know it's supposed to have something to do with suspense and all but come on!

There are loads of things that have made me jump but oddly enough I can only remember one right now.

In The Grudge 2 (awful film) there was a bit with a flash of ghosts or something in the guidance councilors office. I just about died 😛

Here's one that made me jump and squeal in the cinema (then sink in my seat praying that noone had noticed)... Silent Hill!!! Which part? Pretty much all of it... told ya... I'm a total scaredy cat.

Silent Hill wasnt scary (apart from the nurses)

The only one that ever made me squeal in the cinema was Freddy vs Jason when the guys head falls off 😛

I think Silent Hill freaked me out mostly because I'm more into psycho-thrillers than gore. In Silent Hill, you never exactly knew what was going to happen next. AND the woman didn't have any kind of weapon for most of the movie, so I kept being CERTAIN she was going to die in the next few minutes. I don't watch many movies with my pistol in my lap, but I did that one.

The nurses were AWESOME. And that little girl playing such a freaky part was just amazing. Especially when you watch the special features and see her acting like a little girl in a lot of really freaky makeup. It's eerie.

I'm a jumpy person so pretty much anything orchestrated to get that little jump value will get me.

I haven't seen anything scary for awhile though....I can't watch scary movies on my own, even the bad ones just freak me out. One of these days, I will get through all of Wolf Creek...but someone's gotta hold my hand... 😛

The scene that made me jump would have to be the first time Pennywise The Clown opened his mouth to reveal spikey looking teeth in the movie "It" by Stephen King.

Actually, that whole movie freaked me out.

However, I am older and watched it the other night on TV (in order to overcome my fear), and i was not scared at all. It was cool to see Seth Green when he was younger (btw, pennywise found seths fear to be werewolves, hahaha) and John Ritter was in it too (he did not play a psychopathic robot).

Oh, speaking of Stephen King...The Langoliers movie freaked me out. Not so much the actual story of it...it was the guy ripping the paper. Constantly! Rip, rip, rip.....I shudder at the sound of too much paper ripping.

The Descent scared the pants off of me, I love horror films even though everytime I see one I swear I am never watching one again.

But the most scariest character ever has to be the Wheelies from Return to OZ! They still freak me out just thinking about them!

Jaws - before I even got into the theatre. Some yahoo decided to yell "shark" in the lobby and I threw my popcorn all over. It didn't help that my mother and grandmother jumped even higher than me.

Scene in an actual movie - Alien, little bugger jumping out of Kane's tummy; The Thing - pretty much everything after the crazy Swedes; Serenity - spear + Walsh = me jumping up in the theatre yelling, "he did not just kill Walsh!" Shocked the hell out of me...

I'm terrified of clowns and it may be because of that movie. I don't think I could be as brave as you and watch it to overcome my fear. Clowns, dolls and pretty much anything like that scary the crap outta me. Can't help it. I think "It" had other metaphors that I tend to have an adverse reaction to but that's another story.

What a delightful thread. It's easy to scare me. Some of these scenes are: The drawer suddenly opening in The Exorcist. Well everyone in the cinema also screamed and then there was embarrassed laughter from everyone who screamed. Then there's that dead lady who just popped out of the bathtub in What Lies Beneath with Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer. I was watching this on dvd alone in the living room and I screamed , ran to the bedroom and woke my husband and asked him to turn off the TV. I wasn't about to go back to the living room. Oh my beloved was annoyed.

I don't even know why I love Stephen King so much. He just scares me. "It" also scared me all the way and so did Salem's Lot because I read Salem's Lot and even the book had me scared.

And Aliens of course, I think because I saw Alien and was expecting to be rudely surprised I was so tense from the beginning to the end. And I still I watch potentially scary films. Why do I do this to myself?

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning
Never been so scared in my life! (😉). I watched it with no prior knowlege of the other movies, and I literally forced my friend to walk me home that night... and I live next door! Wasn't so much as scene as much as the whole movie I'm afraid!

Dead Silence
A newer movie that my special someone and I unknowingly rented halloween night, not a bad movie but for someone who is creeped out by evil puppets (such as myself) I couldn't even finish watching it! The scene where the puppet lady (can't remember her name) is dead and you see her AS a puppet-- oh dearr! That'll scar a person for life!

Nightmare on Elm Street
Had to give this one an honourable mention at least, it's really good for an older movie, the very last scene and the first muder are both really well done. And jumpy-oh my!

Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Okay, I know it's Disney but COME ON! That witch/queen lady, she has to be the creepiest character known to man kind. When the Queen first transforms and you see her in her new witchy-form I actually screamed and ran and hid as a kid. To this day I still won't watch the movie. :blush:
