Hang Out Thread

Hey everyone! I haven't been here in awhile, but summer break has started, so I'm back. My kids & I went to Tulsa Comic Expo last month- our first ever convention and we had so much fun. We met Doug Jones (from the Gentlemen) and he was so nice.

About the sleeping thing- I have slept in late the past couple of days (10 am), and I really need to force myself to get up early during summer break because I get migraines from sleeping too much (or not enough)

Great pic!
Hello Vision Girl, I remember you from when I was last here, I have recently come back myself 🙂

To add something on the TV theme, last Autumn/Winter I did a rewatch of the whole Quantum Leap Series, first time I have watched it all through, that program was to my childhood what Buffy was to my adolescence.

I considered doing a you tube video with clips from it to the scientist by coldplay, but could never figure out how to do it properly, or get hold of the best editing software 🙁 In my mind that song fits perfectly with quantum leap so thats a bit of a shame 🙄

Are you on www.diystompboxes.com? Freestompboxes.org is another site.

Thanks! I'm not much of a DIY-er so I'll probably just get something like this, should be fine for nighttime noodling with headphones. I have amps for everything else.

What are your goals from exercise?

Well, I just want to stay fit and healthy. Better times, longer distances, it all matters, sure, but at the end of the day it's mostly about health. Also, fun.

For me it is running, hopefully up to marathon distance some day, though I will settle for shorter distances if I have more success there.

I'm not interested in any competitive stuff, but a marathon on an indoor rower? Yeah, that would be something. I'd love to be able to do that one day, I'm nowhere near ready but it is sort of a dream of mine. Maybe next year?

That would be a great achievement, fun also is one of the main motives for me, its a great feeling pushing my body to the limit
Hello everyone! Just joining the party. I've been at work a lot lately, so I haven't had much time to myself. But to add to the exercise trend, I started playing basketball again! brinkster130, I'm a bit jealous of you! There isn't really any basketball leagues around here for adults, let alone woman's leagues. I've just been playing with friends, I'm very very rusty, so it's probably a good think I'm not playing on any team 😛

I've also been thinking of getting netflix lately, mainly because I want to watch the new season of Orange is the New Black. I'm thinking of trying out the free month, but I know I'll waste way too much of my time watching TV is I get it. And this summer my resolution is to read at least one book per month. I love reading but with school and work and all of that I don't give myself any time to do that. Now I've made it a goal to allocate an hour of my day to read 😛

Nowhere, I'm a bit like you, I don't always like watching series because then I need to commit and with my schedule, it doesn't always work! That's why I started fallowing series that have smaller seasons, I find 13 episodes easier to fallow than the average 24. I suggest American Horror Story since it's a self contained story for each season. So you can always watch one season without the need to watch the others.

This summer for me is all about saving money for a trip to either Ireland or Wales/Cornwall (next summer). I can't decide which. I'm especially into ancient historical/mythological sites. Dude, the hill of Tara (among many other things the ancient seat of the unbroken line of high kings of Ireland) or the legendary Tintagel Castle, among many other interesting things the reputed home of none other than Arthur! (I LOVE Arthurian legends, I've read every version of his cycle I could get my cyber hands on, including related literature, proto-versions of the tales, the vulgate versions, anything I could find). If I can save enough I'll try to do both maybe. The long-term goal is to see everything of ancient historical interest in every country in Europe (and there is much to see) and after that, maybe other parts of the world too.

It's nice to hear so many of you lead active lifestyles! I do that too. Lift a few days a week and run three days a week. I'm content with where I'm at, I work out to maintain things as they are. I'm big into martial activities. I'm learning archery; I have an inexpensive bow that serves its purpose but eventually I want to get an authentic recreation of a long bow or something from some favorite historical period of mine. I used to also do a lot of fencing but I stopped a few years back.

The only other interesting thing I do every summer is climb our mountains. I usually get a few in each summer. We call the tallest ones "14ers", which means a mountain that is above 14,000 feet tall. Colorado has 53 of them (and literally thousands of peaks between 11,000 and 14,000). I've done quite a few "14ers", but I want to do them all eventually. Some friends and I want to do mount massive in a few weeks, after more of the snow melts away. And I usually do a couple of trails/hikes for purely aesthetic/scenic reasons (the most beautiful hikes I've done were at slightly lower elevations than 14,000+. "Dragon's Back" in Wetterhorn Park was particularly beautiful. I'm sorry to go on and on, but Colorado is so amazing for hiking, backpacking, etc. Colorado isn't wonderful for everything, but at this it excels.

Inverness in Scotland is beautiful and filled with historic sights. You could throw a stone in any direction and hit something historic. Loved it there.

Oh yeah, a couple of solid weeks there might not suffice. The Scottish Highlands are so beautiful too.

I love love love Tintagel....been there many times 😀 I'd also recommend St. Michaels Mountand the church hidden away in St. Just... Beautiful places steeped in history.

Hey guys!

On Netflix I'd have to say that I love it cause it's user friendly. It doesn't always have the selection I desire so I'll try other services but I always keep Netflix because it's so smooth.

Oh exercise... for someone who used to work with it I sure don't get a lot of it anymore 😉 I walk my dogs but that's about it (I work full-time and study half-time my time has been somewhat limited...) I am however doing a fun-run this weekend, a COLOR ME RAD run, and I think that'll be super fun 😀

This summer is about moving for me, I've gotten a new apartment so right now I cannot stop thinking about the new furniture I wanna get... I even surf IKEA and other stores at work... I'm addicted XD So many choices... such a small cash flow 😉

Ooo, fun thread and a great idea, Kean!!

Just read through everything and don't remember much. 😛 I had Netflix before streaming, so I have no opinion on it. We have Amazon Prime, so we use Amazon Instant Video a lot. I have been using it for my first watch of How I Met Your Mother! I don't watch a lot of TV otherwise.

I have been trying to "get fit" since last summer. I got really into Beach Body programs and have gone through Hip Hop Abs and Insanity, and just started T25. I also run on my elliptical machine on occasion, plus a friend of mine and I are doing a couple of 5k races this year (I am not in any way competitive and I run slower than IE on dial-up, but they will be fun!) so we've been meeting at 5:30 AM to run together.

Do you find the Beach Body programs work for you? I'm always jumping in and out of them. Time is always what gets me.

We have Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu.

Netflix is great for streaming, never lags for me at all.

Amazon prime can lag a little from time to time, but not too often. I like it specifically so I can rent new stuff without leaving my house. 🙂

Exercise! I got a manual treadmill, again so I can avoid leaving my house, haha! But I have gotten sick two times in the past month so I end up just hanging out with a box of tissues and self pity, staring longingly at the treadmill, thinking "Wouldn't it be awesome if I could just WISH myself into shape?"

I am looking forward to using it, though.

Wow, those look cool! I had never heard about St. Michaels Mount, thanks! (I guess there is a similar fortified island type of thing in Normandy right?) And the St. Just church looks so beautiful! It looks like something from a Pre-Raphaelite painting (like Waterhouse or someone). Thanks for the suggestions!

No probs hun :)
I wanna hang out! (And then everyone said, "That's great...who's Kairos again?")

Today was a typical boring day at work, but I had big plans for coming home, working on my original fiction, doing yoga while listening to Welcome to Nightvale, and making chicken curry. So far, I haven't done any of those things, but I did beta a fanfic. And put on yoga pants. And any minute now I'll get up and defrost the chicken.

On Saturday I leave for a business trip to Abu Dhabi. I'm not nervous yet, but I hope the food isn't as good as it was on the last trip because putting on yoga pants can only get me so far.

I'm glad it's biking weather again, though. Still unsure if the minutes a bike shaves off my commute are worth it against the annoyance of changing my shirt when I get there and needing to carry a bike lock. Wondering if the local bike mechanic can get me set up with one of those rear-wheel basket holders.

Last night I (finally) ordered my wedding invitations. Also opened an early gift from the fiance's friend. It's a salt and pepper shaker set in the shape of a kitten and a ball of yarn! It IS as cute as it sounds! And my parents are getting us Calphalon pots and pans!

So, not much to complain about here. I'm going to get up and defrost the chicken now.

I know the Kairos! 😀

I didn't realise Abu Dhabi was happening so soon. How long is this trip? Also, that salt and pepper set sounds adorable (and perfect you!)

Anthony Cordova, I have this thing for all things about the Arthurian legends as well, and in case you weren't aware so does Amber Benson.
I spent a few weeks near Tintagel a lot of years ago. There are some rum old places and great place names nearby. I tried to go to St. Nectan's Glen once but I wasn't welcome. A beautiful place by all accounts though.

Just about a week, including travel time. I kind of expect to spend most of it in the hotel, so this time I'm not really doing much research beyond "How to not offend locals". Hopefully I'll have some kind of impression to bring back with me...

Oh, oh, oh, and people are talking about Tintagel! I've been to Tintagel! Let me see if I have a picture!

Hi everyone. I'm waiting to hear if I've got an interview for either of the 2 library jobs I've applied for. One is a Young Adults Librarian role & the other is an Information Services role. I'm currently an Acquisitions & Cataloging Librarian and it's very, very boring. I'd never done Acquisitions or Cataloging before when I went for my current job. I had been a Subject Librarian for Architecture at a University. I thought I'd give it a go and it sucks. So hopefully I get one of those other library roles - or at least an interview!

good luck with that!
The biggest employer of library science grads in the world is Google. There are research organizations that require a master's or Doctorate in library science to help unscramble searches and keyword generation. Lots of possibilities there.

wow, interesting. had no idea!
I've been toying with the idea of doing an MLIS. Aimee, would you recommend it? Do you enjoy being a librarian? My worry is that I would be bored. I currently work in the Arts (I have been running an Architecture festival but have moved from overseeing general operations to running its Education and Film program for this year) but there's no job security and not much scope for growing into more senior roles. I like the idea of the library as a space for creating arts and cultural engagement but I'm not sure if it's a given with library jobs.
Ethan Reigns, I wasn't aware of that. It's good to know.

I find public library work pretty boring. The 2 main reasons are that there's only enough money in the budget to do the bare minimum and the majority of public librarians seem to have been in their jobs for decades and are pretty resistant to change. Wouldn't worry about not having anything to do though, as public libraries are notoriously understaffed.

School library's don't have much money either but it's very busy and there's much more opportunity to get creative. They usually don't pay over term breaks either.

I've found University libraries to be the best. They've usually got the money & staff to get things done. They're open to new ideas & forward focused. They're multicultural & your customers (students & academics) really need your help (as opposed to wanting the latest vampire erotica). There are lots of opportunities for career progression in a university library too. When I worked in one I got promoted twice in 3 years.

There are special libraries too (law offices, hospitals etc)

The only one a MLIS is really necessary for is University or possibly special. But the MLIS is usually done while working in a library (libraries usually help fund your study)

Hope that helps!
