That is right folks, 18 years ago today the first episode of Buffy aired.

I can't believe it was so long ago! I have made so many amazing friends that I call family through this show. I even know people that met on forums and are now married.

So many great memories from episodes and discussions.

Please share your favourite memories that the show has given you.

This show gave me my best friend, the one person I wouldn't be able to live and function without.

This show also brought me this place, and even though we've had our ups and downs, it's still my home on the net, the one place I check first when I'm online. Even though I don't post as much, I'm still a huge lurker, lol.

It also gave me that one up there *points to Faith* and I love her a lot and she's been a great friend to me over the last 10 years. She was the first person who took the time to speak to me when I came to this website, the first one to help me and I probably wouldn't still be here today without her.

I'm trying to hold back the tears.. that was so touching.

The show didn't give me that much, not in comparison to this forum. If not for this forum I would not really even be inclined to watch or discuss the show. Though I will say True Blood did give me a new appreciation for Buffy. Because good god, that was horrible.

I was with True Blood up until around the time Tara was turned. It all went down hill from there. And the finale was absolutely dreadful. It was almost as bad as the HIMYM finale.

The True Blood books were so much better, though, again, from what I hear, the final book was a bit of a dud, though I haven't actually read it yet...mostly because of everyone's reactions to who Sookie ends up with, lol.

I think it was that season when I lost interest.. First few were good but it just felt... Repetitive
Oh man, Buffy is only like 5 years younger them me, that's crazy to think about (actually, the movie is the same age as me). Let's just say that it'd be an understatement to say that this show has brought me a lot. I've always been one to like fantasy better than real life, I love fiction, love reading books, love TV shows, and Buffy was my very first TV addiction. I met a lot of great friends through Buffy, and most importantly, Buffy influenced who I am as a person now. Oh, and it made me realize just how gay I was, thanks Willow!

How so?

Other than this of course!

Let's see, I was about 10yo when I started watching Buffy, at around 12-13 is when I started dealing with depression and anxiety. Buffy is one of the thing that always made me feel better. Coping mechanism I guess, fiction helps me deal with the real world. I just think that Buffy overall has a pretty strong message, might not always be a happy show, but I think it reflects life pretty well. Overall I think it just helped me being confident in who I am as a person. The show just helped me figure out who I was back when I was a growing awkward teenager who didn't know how to deal with emotions.

Ok. Sorry. I mistook what you meant. I thought you meant like I was so enamored with Giles I became a librarian.

I think Buffy holds a unique place in my heart because:

1) I've never seen a show before or since that in which I've loved so many of the characters. Most shows I like 2 maybe 3 of the cast and put up with the rest because they just tend to bore me. Not with Buffy/Angel- I like almost all the characters and love their interactions.

2) I like the structure, the narrative arcs of the seasons, the character growth that most of the seasons exhibit, the Big Bads- bad guys that have shades/dimensions to them. If another show has any of these elelments I like them all the more.

3) I love kick-ass heroines. They were much rarer before Buffy, at least on television, and I think Buffy, Willow, Faith, Cordy and co were trailblazers in this regard. Punching/zapping/stabbing people and looking cool doing it.

4) I love the humour, the wit, the symbolism and the metaphor. It's basically a very clever show on a lot of levels.

5) The shows are about growing up, dealing with life, finding meaning and purpose in a harsh, unforgiving world that seems to lack a comforting religious/moral framework. If you're strong, if you rely on your friends/family, if you recognise and try and conquer your flaws then you'll have a life worth living even if, in the end, you don't make it.

6) As a Brit I appreciate that Joss is an anglophile and that many of the characters I like are fellow countrymen. Sure there a few cliche's thrown in there but the writers always go beyond the obvious to flesh out the characters. Giles, Wesley, Rayne, even Spike have lots of great moments.

I love these boards with so many different, nice, lovely people on them.
I like the comics because they seem to be keeping the 'verse alive where other fiction has fallen by the way side.
I love a lot of the fan fic that's written about these characters- some of it is good and heartfelt and really imaginative and some of it is lazy, derivitive and unintentionally hilarious. Still love to read it though.

Na, but my mom did. Personally I tried witchcraft, but failed miserably, I'm not aloud near candles since that one incident...

Wow, 18... it really doesn't feel like it's been so long...

I wonder how kids today feel watching exchanges like this;
Cordelia: James Spader?
Buffy Summers: He
needs to call me.

Do they think - "Who's James Spader?" - or - "Eeeew, James Spader! Why Buffy why?"
;P

Seriously though, this show is probably the most long-lasting TV fascination of mine. I've never talked this much about any show, not even Twin Peaks, and I certainly don't feel as strongly about other shows (like actually getting a bit miffed when Penny on The Big Bang Theory calls it "cute". Ridiculous but that was my knee-jerk reaction).

My fondest memories of Buffy is being a teenager, taping the episodes on VHS and watching them over and over again. I had a crappy home situation then and Buffy (especially the episode "Ted") gave me a sense of strenght and courage that still strikes a chord with me today. I'll always love Buffy, show and character, for giving me such a ray of light in my life at that time.

This means that I spent more than 2/3 of my life watching that show 😱 It's been in my life pretty much longer than any pets or friends!!!!

This is amazing and sad at the same time. To me, no show has kept its charm and quality as well as Buffy! The topics brought up are still relevant, the plot is still moving, the jokes are still funny! Yet, I hate nostalgia. I really do. I get so sad thinking about the fact that these guys are getting older, drifting apart, and there'll most likely never be another Buffy show. I can't point to one specific thing that this show has given me, it's too blurry. Buffy has just been an experience that has affected me as a person, and the fact that I get to experience this show is something I'm truly thankful for.

Buffy might be getting older, but Buffy will never die.

It celebrated it's 18th birthday over a month ago and it didn't hit me until this week…
