Like many Swedish traditions the why is less important that the how. Yep. We don't care much why we celebrate things, as long as you do it right.

To be perfectly honest lots of people just like an excuse to getting really, really drunk. Personally I've never seen the appeal of either forget what happened or becoming sick which many seem to look at as proof that you've had a good time. Each to their own I guess.

The sad thing is that the video is actually quite accurate.
I despise midsummer. It's the worse tradition ever.

But yeah... Happy Midsummer! 🙂

/SK

Ahh so that's what Taake was talking about earlier! I get it now! 😀

lol I vote to bring this tradition to Canada. (oh, that's right, we don't even have a summer, how are we gonna get a midsummer?)

"Human sacrifices are a thing of the past"

Well now, that's a damn shame! 😀

Athena stated that human sacrifices are a thing of the past, are they? The practise of human sacrifice is alive and well, so to speak.
I sent some king prawns to the great countries of the world for the midsummer celebrations but the little buggers escaped, I knew I should have sent them by aircraft. They don't like parachuting and for those of you who don't believe me when was the last time you saw a King Prawn parachuting?

I love midsummer, I'll make garlands for everyone! 😀 I always get stuck making them, except this year - I was too lazy - sorry to disappoint.

Nothing gets your spirits up like some little humiliation by dance by the way! *sings* Små grodorna, små grodorna är lustiga att se... You'll have to dance if you want a garland!

What about a dancing garland?

Best. Garland. Ever!
So are there a lot of frogs there? I never thought of it a being very froggy before.

I just thought you might have had a lot of frogs hence the song and the snakes. Snakes like frogs. Dang. I bought some fresh shrimp at the store the other yesterday and now regretting not getting frogs legs.

What about snakes?

The melody is a french military march and the Swedish text seems to be heavily influenced by the english version, mockingly calling the french frogs. No one seem to know why it's popular in Sweden or how the text came to be. That's our culture for you, brought in from other places and no one really knows why. Hence it's as Swedish as things can be...

In the words of our former prime minister - the only thing that's truly Swedish is barbarism.
