Thanksgiving 2007

Here's hoping that all of you here have a great Thanksgiving Day and set aside a moment to reflect on the year's blessings. One of the things I have to be thankful for are my friends here and the time we've spent both arguing and agreeing about the minutiae of our favorite fictional characters and a few other issues. I love you all.

And for those here who happen to not be living in the USA, thankfulness isn't exclusively an American feeling. Feel free to join in, and you're all invited "over the river and through the woods.." to my house to share a little turkey and dressing, even if you're only here in spirit.

The hotline has heard from a gal who couldn't find the turkey she buried in a snowbank, a guy who wanted to know how to carve his bird with a chain saw, and a mechanic who worried about using motor oil as a baste.

Then there was the young mother who failed to notice her children playing near the oven-ready bird. The kids decided the turkey's cavity was a good place to park toy cars. Their mom didn't discover Ol' Tom was doubling as a garage until after the turkey had been roasted.

Another confused cook called the Butterball line after cleaning her turkey because she wanted to know how to get the metal pieces out. "Apparently," said one of the Butterball economists, "she had scrubbed her bird with a steel scouring pad." A West Coast woman who had taken anti-bacterial precautions too far called Butterball to find out how to get the bleach she'd used off her bird.

Butterball turkey experts still talk about the Kentucky woman who called in 1993 to ask how to get her dog out of her turkey. It seems the woman's Chihuahua had dived into the bird's cavity and become trapped there. The woman tried pulling the pooch and shaking the bird, all to no avail. A Butterball economist finally suggested the woman carefully cut the opening in the turkey wider to release the captive canine.

Thanks, OM3, but down here in Georgia, the turkey and dressing tastes so good that the birds fight among themselves just for the honor of being served up. Southern cooking beats even the next best thing by a mile!

Is "dressing" the same as what we in the UK call stuffing WA? For reference, here's a link to Delia Smith's (the queen of Brit TV cooks 🙂) Turkey Stuffing recipe -

Yes, dressing and stuffing are the same thing.....altho, we tend to call it stuffing if it was actually cooked in the bird, and dressing if it wasn't. Mmmm, mmmm, good. WA, you're right, southern cooking beats all else by miles.

What was it that Anya called it? Ritual sacrifice? LOL!

Stuffing isn't the same thing as Dressing. Dressing is made from corn bread with chicken broth and a few spices (sage, mostly), celery and boiled eggs mixed in and baked surrounding the turkey. Some people do think Dressing and Stuffing are the same thing, but Dressing is mostly a Southern dish, and the taste is totally different.
 
Eh, it's the same thing to us. I've had cornbread stuff and cornbread dressing, as well as regular stuffing (made with white bread) and regular dressing. I even have recipes that can be cooked in the bird or out.
 
Well... Happy Thanksgiving to you all. We don't celebrate it over here, obviously. We have to wait at least another month for turkey! Oh well... 🙁

My hubby and I are having over a bunch of LA's twenty-somethings and transplants who can't make it back home for the holiday. We're doing the "urban tribe" thing, I guess. Should be fun. I hope everyone else has fun, too.

I can't decide would it be cool to have Thanksgiving here, or if it would diminish Christmas. I'm a cynical bitch, but I'm a fool for Christmas...

A bit more about the invite to white avenger's bird kill festivities, mainly the 'over the river and through the woods' bit, I must have missed about being tied up for the journey, how did I know about the being tied up bit ?. A hungry bird told me, I could tell the bird was hungry from the way it, ' gobbled ' down it's food.
 
Chyea, this is late but oh well. Just wanted to stop in for the holiday season and say hello! Good to see some of the old faces are still here. I hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving... or... whatever you celebrated this week. I decided to call it "Calm Before The Storm Day," because after all the nice Thanksgiving feasts is when we started to enslave them, steal their land, etc. But... Yeah... See Yall at Christmas!... or a couple days after...
