This year, I'm throwing my first New Years party. I want it to be super awesome so I want everyone's advice. What kinda food/drinks, music, decorations, etc should I have. Don't hold back anything. I want to know what works and what doesnt. Plus, some awesome dance songs would be super too.

I'd say all you need is alcohol, stimulants and small amounts of clothing. Oh, and techno...

sod the techno, no party ever went better than those where we played nothing but TRADE. Oh I miss Tony de Vit!
Pizza and caffeine. 🙂 For music maybe for inspiration you could look up party mixes and see what songs are included.

I've pretty much been doing just that. But then I found some site about popular songs of the 90s and had to download every song I listened to before I hit middle school. *sigh*

I did that the other day!!! 90's music karma :)
Good friends, enough people you know and like to hang around, so that the atomsphere is good enough. You should have enough space for everybody and quite a lot of alcohol. Music, well anything you can dance to and sing to comes in quite handy. This can be basically anything then. Ask your friends to bring alcohol and chips and make a list of things, so that you don't have too much of this kind of alcohol, but too little other stuff.

Make Hunch Punch... its ALWAYS a crowd pleaser. My recipe for a large party batch:

1 Handle of Everclear or Golden Grain
7 2-liter bottles of Mountain Dew
3 frozen cans of limeade
2 (or so) bags of gummi bears (adding fruit, like apples is also good)

Mix all together, serve over ice and be careful, its decievingly delicious but deadly

Hope your party's superfun! 🙂

What on earth are golden grain and handle of everclear?
Make sure it's not going to get gatecrashed!

I don't know if it's an Australian thing, but when a party gets out of control - it gets out of control BADLY!

My housemate had a birthday party for her 17th at her dads house and there were about 300 people running around trashing the place, stealing things and starting fights. In the end there was a big brawl with police officers in riot gear and even one of those fancy cop helicopters that have the big search lights. To top it all off someone got stabbed.

So not to be a party pooper but make sure it's not to huge, and make sure people know that while partners are welcome - idiots are not.

Don't be afraid to say no to people if they want to do something stupid in your house (one of my favourite disasters at my old place includes a mud party in my living room... I woke up to footprints on the ceiling). Remember it's your house, and your friends should be acting like guests - not like they own the place.

Make sure there is lots and lots and lots of toilet paper spare in a cupboard somewhere. Nothing ruins a party faster than no toilet paper.

Get plastic glasses. They don't have to be tacky ones that you would see at a kids party - you can get some really nice looking ones if you have a look around. Drunk people = smashed glass. Smashed glass + drunk people = bad accidents.

Also make sure there is plenty of room for people to crash if need be, the last thing you want is a group of people trying to drive home drunk. Places to crash for drunk people don't need to be beds... From what I've seen a cushion will do the trick, along with more bizare places for the drunker elements - bath tubs, rugs, linen cupboards etc.

And the most important thing - be a good host. Don't get to drunk to early because it will make people feel uncomfortable if they're just arriving (to see you!) and you're stumbling around changing the song 30 seconds in because you've got bored of it. If someone looks bored then introduce them to other people. Make sure people always have a drink in their hand (even if it's just water)

Oh - and a side note - think about what smokers are going to do if it's pouring down with rain and you have no shelter outside - it will easily ruin the party.

Wow, so I've talked about a lot here, but basically HAVE FUN! (And make sure you let us all know how it goes)

wow - thanks for all that. but believe me, smokers wouldnt have to worry about rain - try about 3ft of snow
Drinking games.... lots of spirits, liquers, people only drink in december!! Cocktails are good fun - gets people together having a lol.... make mixed cds before hand so you can keep your cd collection private and safe (if you have cds!)...

warn your neighbours and invite em!

How on Earth did I manage to write so much and forget 'warn the neighbours'?
caitaintdead agrees: What on earth are golden grain and handle of everclear?

Golden Grain and Everclear are both alcohol... the highest proof alcohol out there in fact, 190 proof/ 95% alcohol... so obviously you have to be careful with it but its delicious in my recipe :silly:
