Just want to say it has been getting better. Things that were done (including more reasons to be wary of psychiatry) even in the 1980s could be horrific in which the hopeful lights burned all the brighter for the darkness. And we celebrate those liberated from Nazi camps, but plenty of gays just traded one jailor for another back then. Brilliant people were once ruined over it.
Even in the 2000s I faced death threats, which included one who wrote down the license plate of my girlfriend's jeep so he or someone in his group could kill us at any time. Even to this day my family (notable exceptions aside) in rural Texas generally practices a "we won't ask, and you better not tell" with me (to be fair, when my aunt tried to break that unspoken agreement, she was shut down by the others, but they'd come down on me if I spoke up).
And even LGBT back then could turn on one another (including those in their own group).
It's not a perfect world by any means (but then I know it will never be), but I'm so glad for how much better things are today that I just breathe a sigh of relief. If I was told it would be like this today as it is back in the early 2000s, I'd have never believed it. Twilight is turning into dawn (at least in this regard) and I feel grateful and happy.
I used to speak with those who came of age in the 70s and they're almost tearful at how much better it has gotten in their lifetime, and it looks like it's a trend that will continue. Hopefully those coming of age today will reflect back on that and feel hopeful that their lives and prospects will be even better off (again, in that one regard) as our rainbow grows ever brighter (and more inclusive) and less hated (overall).
