May I be the first to wish all of our Irish members and Irish descendants, plus anyone else who just likes a good excuse to party a good day and a happy time. Don't drink too much green beer.

Urgh, don't talk about green alcohol or guiness... we celebrated St Patrick's Day early at university (night before last), and I drank far too much guiness and vile green punch... just thinking about it makes me want to throw up!
It may not be the happiest St Patty's day in Atlanta, but it'll certainly be the most memorable. A storm came through downtown Atlanta last night and did millions of dollars' damage to the Georgia Dome alone, plus lord only knows how much more to the surrounding area. Windows broken out, power and telephone lines down and poles broken...We got a mess in Atlanta, folks!!!

(And it was just announced that a second storm will be here by this evening!!)
 
Ireland was hit by that storm last week too...half of the campus in college was closed off...totally ruined rag week🙁..not that I would partake in any festivities while at work :blush:

I fear I may be playing the role of Confused American here but...what is rag week? Oddly enough I think I've heard the phrase but no clueage as to what it actually is
well I hope everyone else has a happy St. Patricks day. I would love to know what the REAL meaning behind the holiday is. Because all I view it as is a horribly mean holiday where people pinch you if you arnt wearing green 🙁 and everyone gets uselessy drunk for no good reason. Sorry for my hostility about this particular holiday, some have a problem with Valentines and my anti-holiday is St. Patty's but maybe like I said before if I knew what the real reason for celebrating was I would appreciate it.

St.Patrick's Day is Ireland's national holiday. It's the feast day of St.Patrick who brought Christianity to Ireland and apparently rid the country of snakes (although I think thats a myth)
 
oh well I guess thats worth celebrating then 🙂

but why do we celebrate it here in the U.S? Why has it become a tradition of getting drunk here?

Because of the HUGE Irish disapora and ex-patriots in the US...there are literally more Irish in America than Ireland.
 
Huh. Well, we don't do the pinching thing here, if that's any consolation.

St. Patrick's Day got associated with good, old fashioned hard partying because it's the only day in Lent where it was cool to eat and drink all you wanted.

I only learned today what this day is about, so it's the first time I can at least pretrend to celebrate (only pretend because this day means nothing where I live)
 
Isn't there something about Paddy's day being moved this year because it falls during Easter? Although from what I've seen that only seems to apply in Religious World, 'cos in Secular World they seem to be going for it big style despite what the church says...any Catholics want to enlighten this poor heathen?

I'm Catholic and I haven't heard anything about the Vatican moving the 17th. That doesn't mean they didn't try!
The Church have moved it to the 15th which is yesterday/today depending on where you are right now, I'm fairly sure they did it becuase Easter is next Sunday and it was all too close or something! but all the festivities like the parades are still on the 17th.

To be honest I'm alittle confused about it. I live on St.Patrick's Road, named after said Saint because he converted a Tuatha (tribe) here to Christianity 1600 years ago or so. But anyway there is this huge mass that happens at the well on St.Patrick's Road evey Paddy's Day. So since the church moved St.Patrick's Day to the 15th it should have happened then but its going to be on the 17th as usual, so I'm not sure whats going on.

Rag Week is pretty much Irish college's version of Spring Break only it happens on campus! There are loads of events happening on campus to raise money-bungee jumps, mud wrestling and countless other things. Basically its about having the craic while raising thousands for charity. Also, its a great excuse to get drunk for a week and not go to classes, lecturers pretty much expect it from you! There's gigs every night whether its a band (Republic of Loose played this year) or maybe a comedy gig but generally the whole city kinda caters for us students. Restaurants, pubs and clubs all get into the spirit and have some great parties organised for that week.

But like I said before, since I am on work placement this semester I IN NO WAY TOOK PART IN ANY RAG WEEK FESTIVITIES:whistle:...well maybe a drink or two here and there...:blush:
