Wop is definitely not a politically correct term. Without papers is the actual meaning but it ranks right up there with the n word applied to black people.

DING, DING, DING, give that person a cigar!! 🚬 Yep, anyone could have been a WOP but there just happened to be more Italians than any other nationality needing paperwork!

Oh believe me, this Italian would rather be called a WOP than a lot of other things I've been called in the past!!😉

It never bothered me. I always regarded it as just another nickname.

Yes - I thought you'd mentioned your ethnicity before (in relation to tomato sauce) and presumed you owned the term. I'm cool with that. 🙂 TBH, I'm not sure it ever had much traction in the UK after the immediate postwar years. We didn't get "mass" Italian immigration until 50s/60s and they weren't "without" papers - they came over to work in our heavy industries. At a national level our beef was with the Irish (ironic given this thread) but that's been going on for longer than the US has been the US. 🙄
