Why is Thanksgiving?

When it is actually this:
Following the Revolutionary War, the Continental Congress recognized the need to give thanks for delivering the country from war and into independence.
Congress issued a proclamation on October 11, 1782:
By the United States in Congress assembled.

PROCLAMATION.
IT being the indispensable duty of all Nations, not only to offer up their supplications to ALMIGHTY GOD, the giver of all good, for his gracious assistance in a time of distress, but also in a solemn and public manner to give him praise for his goodness in general, and especially for great and signal interpositions of his providence in their behalf: Therefore the United States in Congress assembled, taking into their consideration the many instances of divine goodness to these States, in the course of the important conflict in which they have been so long engaged; the present happy and promising state of public affairs; and the events of the war, in the course of the year now drawing to a close; particularly the harmony of the public Councils, which is so necessary to the success of the public cause; the perfect union and good understanding which has hitherto subsisted between them and their Allies, notwithstanding the artful and unwearied attempts of the common enemy to divide them; the success of the arms of the United States, and those of their Allies, and the acknowledgment of their independence by another European power, whose friendship and commerce must be of great and lasting advantage to these States:
- Do hereby recommend to the inhabitants of these States in general, to observe, and request the several States to interpose their authority in appointing and commanding the observation of THURSDAY the twenty-eight day of NOVEMBER next, as a day of solemn THANKSGIVING to GOD for all his mercies: and they do further recommend to all ranks, to testify to their gratitude to GOD for his goodness, by a cheerful obedience of his laws, and by promoting, each in his station, and by his influence, the practice of true and undefiled religion, which is the great foundation of public prosperity and national happiness.
Done in Congress, at Philadelphia, the eleveth day of October, in the year of our LORD one thousand seven hundred and eighty-two, and of our Sovereignty and Independence, the seventh.
JOHN HANSON, President.
Charles Thomson, Secretary.

And lets not forget the NA's for whom Thanksgiving was made possible. Considering most Native Americans opposed the United States, fighting against the colonies, even as their native lands were being threatened.

The dog looks stupid, the cat looks cool. Happy Thanksgiving.

Happy needless turkey murder day

does your UT mean you've killed 5 turkeys then?
And let's not forget it's an excuse for a huge dinner in which we eat until we burst. Which apparently is meant to honor the first successful harvest since we failed miserably for like 5 years running and almost died from starvation.

In all honesty Thanksgiving, to me, never seems to have any assoiciations with pilgrims, native americans etc etc but just seems to signify that the Holiday Season is finally here...which is you know, nice.Although I hate yams.

I'm with you on the yam hate!
Eh, I get more upset over Christopher Columbus day (STUPID excuse for a holiday) than Thanksgiving. Although the pilgrims and the Indians sitting down together blah blah kinda makes me yak. They leave out all the good stuff about the transgressions of the US. So I ignore that, and focus on having a good time with my family. It's better to be happy than vindictive in my book. Make it about your family and friends. And pie.

OOO and Indian Tacos for me!
Then pie.

I have the samefeelings really- I make it a family thing more than anything. And never forget the pie! haha ("It's a ritual sacrifice. With pie")

I'm glad you posted this. I actually don't celebrate Thanksgiving...I think its a gluttenous holiday in which glorifies war and white supremacy and celebrates the slaughtering of innocent people. I mean, we stole their land and have them all syphilis. Happy freaking Thanksgiving.

Anyway. No offense to anyone, of course 🙂 Just my opinion.

Then again France still celebrate their Independence Day which is basically remembering they chopped off a load of people's heads but no one's on THEIR back.Haha.

Actually, it's pretty much proven that Syphillis was a disease that Natives passed over to Europeans, although most of the big diseases (smallpox, etc.) did come over here from Europe. Just FYI!
I don't care if Thanksgiving is a load of horse hooey as long as I get almost a week off. Besides, they've already done enough by canceling Columbus Day, which may have been a crappy holiday, but it was a good excuse for a three-day weekend.

Anyway, it doesn't feel like Thanksgiving this year. My mom is having a little spat with my uncle on my dad's side who usually hosts our holiday parties, so we're just gonna go to some nice restaurant. I think I like it better this way, actually...I can't stand my relatives.

Also, am I the only person that doesn't pig out on Thanksgiving? If anything, I eat less than usual. I guess it's because I hate turkey, stuffing, gravy, ham, etc. and usually wind up having salad. I do like pie, though. Yum.

I'm not a big fan of sweet potatoes, actually (GASP!). But breaded potatoes? I've never heard of them, but they sound delicious!

Breaded tomatoes? Ok...that's just wrong!
The historical Thanksgiving is a bunch of who-ee. I know that, and yet I still enjoy the holiday. It's just a good excuse to sit down to a good meal with loved ones. Life is hectic and, often, we don't stop and take a day to hang out and eat some good, home-cooked food with our families. T-day is one big national excuse to do so. Everything stops for a day and we all get the chance to unwind. It's nice. I don't care about all of the bad stuff that went down in years gone by. Now, T-day is good.

Oh please! breaded tomatoes is the goodness of bread, sugar, butter, and tomatoes all rolled into one. I could toss in some jalapenos so they feel more Texasy to ya.

StuckinTraffic agrees: LOL! Actually, they're starting to sound interesting!
Oh you dont know what you are missing.. trust me. A teaspoon of the goodness will deliver you unto your knees in delirium. Enough butter to give a cow clogged arteries and more sugar than in an ants paradise.
