Joss likes breaking couples apart, in many ways: death, cheating, leaving for the other's own good, losing souls, etc.

Which couple's break up did you think was the hardest one, in your opinion? (hardest to you OR to the characters on the show)

Buffy/Angel.

But I'm not talking about him leaving town. I'm talking about their 'break up' in the sewers. That was so hard to watch.. what she said, what he said..

Although I don't think Oz did anything bad, the look in Willows eyes broke my heart when she saw him with Veruca. Also, when Cordy and Oz saw Xander and Willow.

Xander leaving Anya at the oltar.. when she was sitting in front of D'Hoffryn with her sad, sad eyes.. so heartbreaking 🙁

It was horrible when she said she wants her life to be with him and he said "I don't". I can't imagine how hurtful it was for Buffy to hear that. And he didn't even mean it. It came out really wrong. He meant he doesn't want her to be with him because he wanted her to find love she CAN be with. It's not that he doesn't want them to be together, he just knew what was best for Buffy, and it came out really awful.

I know, he really chose bad words to use :/

Willow / Oz. - Even my brother cried when Oz left Willow. It was *so* sad, because the were such a cute couple.

Xander / Anya - It didn't make any sense that he left her. She obviously loved him very much.. and he loved her. It was so stupid that he just left her at the altar.

Buffy / Spike - "No you don't, but thanks for saying it" - that's where I break down when I watch that episode.

Xanya, definitely. Every break-up was tough but theirs is really the hardest for me.
Anya panicking "Xander is missing? What do you mean Xander is missing?"
The way Anya begs Xander ("Please Xander, it was not true, everything you saw was just a lie")
Xander truely believing it was more than a lie, and 'choosing' to make Anya suffer now instead of making her suffer all her life.
Anya walking alone to the altar, with the music playing and all.
Xander walking under the rain.
And finally, Anya crying, and D'Hoffryn offering her back the vengeance demon power.
The face she makes when she looks at him is so...heartbreaking and full of hurt that I cry just by writting it!

Another one of Joss's "For her own good" (same with Buffy and Angel). I actually have a lot to say about that and I'm sure others too, so I've just decided to open a thread for that topic. It's really interesting.

For the characters, I would say Buffy "breaking up"(let's call it that) with Spike in As You Were. It was of course hard for Spike too, but for Buffy, I think it it was the hardest, since she was so dependent on him.

She hated wanting(loving?) him, and she needed him so badly. She wasn't mentally healthy and that lessened her will power and it seemed so hard for her to end that destructive relationship.

I also think it must have been harder than it looked for Angel to leave Buffy than I first thought. He was alone and felt so incredilby bad for a century, then he found Buffy, and forced himself to let go.

The hardest one for me, must have been when Angel & Buffy broke up, because I was a lot younger when seeing it and not that used to seeing heartbreaks between characters I really cared for.

I mean, this is going to be typical, but Willow and Tara. At the end of Tabula Rasa when she moves out, I cry every time. And Dawn's reaction... We won't get in to that. And Tara's death... That's just tragic.

Of course, I also cried at the end of Willow and Oz. I don't like Willow to be in pain.

I do agree with the Buffy/Angel breakup. She makes a snide remark about them being in sewers in I Will Remember You, doesn't she?

For a second here I was going to tell you my hardest break up, then realized we were talking about the Buffy-verse lol 😛

I could really care less about any of Buffy's breakups...For me it had to be Willow and Oz and Willow and Tara. Mostly, It was Willow and Tara. When they broke up, my jaw dropped down to the floor and I instantly became sad. The breakup was just so hard on Willow 🙁 I always cry at the end of Tabula Rasa!

Also, Xander and Anya. I don't really like Xander, but I love Anya. I thought together, they were really cute, and they were really happy, until Xander messed everything up and left her. Anya's reaction always makes me cry. Also, it's just so messed up being left at the altar to begin with! Poor Anya. And then how they still love each other after wards, it just kills me

gotta go with Angel and Cordelia...

not only was she about to confess her undying (heh) love to him, but then she ascends without being able to tell him... then when she returns, she ends up sleeping with his son...

Hardest breakup in the Buffyverse definitely, deserves it's own episode of Jerry Springer lol

Buffy and Angel in the sewers. I still wince through the whole thing. Even SMG cried for twenty minutes after that scene. They had to close the set and everything.

I also find Willow/OZ hard to watch. "Oz don't you love me?" "My whole life? I've never loved anything else." *SOB*

agree on both.
While Buffy and Angel in the sewers is crippling to this day, I still find Willow and Oz the most heartbreaking. It was just so genuine and the one I could relate to the most. I love Oz to death so his departure was even more painful. With Buffy and Angel it was kind of understandable in terms of circumstance but Willow and Oz it was less so.

But really, any of them with characters I like (😉) they all make me cry.

My first instinct was to say Willow and Oz - that's such a touching scene.

But then I remembered Buffy breaking up with Spike in As You Were and I think I'll have to go with that one... but in a large part that's down to the dailies I've seen of that scene - where the camera is focused on JM's face for the whole time and the look in his eyes is just heartbreaking.

I know that might not technically "count" but it influences my rewatching of that episode, so my vote is going to AYW.

And even though I'm a huge Spuffy fan and I want them to work things out, I think that it was the right thing for her to do at that point in their relationship. So that's a factor for me as well.

Ahhh there were so many sad breakups 🙁

The breakups I found hardest were:

- Buffy and Angel in the sewers. (first tv couple that made me tear up and cry)
- Willow and Oz.
- Xander and Anya.
- Xander and Cordy. (seeing Cordy so heartbroken was so sad)
-Angel and Cordy. (Ok ok they weren't an official couple, but Angel really cared for Cordy and then he has to see her and Connor together 🙁 I felt so bad for Angel )

Bangel, of course. ALL of their goodbyes (which aren't really goodbyes since they never leave each other) were so painful and still are everytime I watch them.

Tara and Willow... when they broke up because of Willow's magic addiction, that was heartbreaking

Buffy/Angel
Oz/Willow
Tara/Willow
Anya/Xander

In that order! It was crushing to see Willow go through another break-up.:/ After what she went through with Oz.

Thinking back there are so many sad breakups.
Oz and Willow off the top of my head. It was sad I adored them and I knew it was coming but it still was sad. The way Willow was and Oz bring on the tears.
