Hardest break up

Willow and Tara. I understand why Tara left and that it would be better for the both of them but it was so sad all the same. When she was packing up at the end of "Tablua Rasa" is sad enough they have to through in Goodbye to You as well, to make it sadder. The whole sequence is so sad and so touching.

"I'm sorry, William" just tugs at my heartstrings.

Oh! Almost forgot. Giles and Jenny didn't really break up in "Passion" but they were broken apart. The look on Giles' face... *sniffle*

Anya and Xander take #1 for me. It was their wedding! It's so heartbreaking. That's when I started really disliking Xander.

Tara and Willow take second place. What made it even more horrible is that they had *just* made up.

Then I got Buffy and Spike in 'As you were'. Her words 'I'm using you and it's killing me' were so sad to hear. I felt so horrible watching this, both for Buffy and Spike.

The moment I've read the thread title I thought of Willow and Oz in 'Wild At Heart'. That IS without a doubt the saddest breakup on both shows, and I'm not a big Woz shipper even. Obviously AH makes it that much more emotional with her awesome acting, but the whole scene with Oz leaving at the end was heartbreaking. That's probably one of the few scenes where I was close to crying. 🙁

In fact, the whole ep I feel really bad for Willow and Oz.

There was others sad breakups, but nothing like that.

For me: Xander and Anya.

For the Characters (and second for me): Buffy and Angel. You could just tell how painful it was for both of them. That still resonates with me all these years later.

Xander and Anya is the one I hate the most because it was the one I really thought would work so when they broke up, I felt like they broke up the relationship that was supposed to just work. It wasn't about all the drama the other relationships were built on. It was just supposed to work and then it didn't. I felt like they just took out the backbone to the show's relationships and there was nothing left to say that maybe sometimes relationships really do work and relationships aren't just about the drama, but about two people who just want to be together and so they are.

Buffy and Angel resonates because they were each other's soulmates (or at the very least they thought they were and had a very deep connection), and you could see in every episode towards the end of season 3 that the break up was killing them. I go back and forth on what I think of their relationship and if it could ever have worked, but the way it ended really left two people who thought they could never love anyone ever again the way they loved each other and it was heartbreaking. I don't think there was another relationship on this show where the two characters thought they had found their soul mates in the way these two did.

This list could go on for a long time. There were a lot of painful breakups and they are wonderfully created so that you really feel for the characters, but these are my top two. Willow and Oz is easily the third relationship I would include to end this list if I went on. That represented two people who grew up and grew apart despite never stopping loving each other. It was the end of their youth for them.

Story wise: Buffy and Angel's break-up was really sad.
Me Personally: I feel that Willow and Tara's break-up was the hardest, I mean at least Buffy got Angel back(well alive anyway.), while Willow lost Tara permanently.

Okay, this is actually really hard for me because almost every single one of the breakups was hard. Except for Buffy and Riley's. I think the episode after their breakup being Triangle, they kind of had to make it a funnier one and I think they might have realized that nobody cared that much.

But anyway. Even Buffy and Angel was hard for me because when I watch I put myself in Buffy's shoes...I am Buffy. But I find that Spike/Buffy in As You Were is really tough. The look on his face, he's totally in love with her and you can just see the pain. He knows he would prefer a healthier relationship with her, one where she loved him as much as he loved her but he's taking what he can get and she's taking that away from him. It's so heartbreaking to watch. I do count this as a breakup although many don't.

Giles and Jenny was really hard. They had just come to terms with each other again and Giles got his heart ripped out by what had happened. It was a death created by Angelus and so it was bound to be totally heartbreaking but the way in which it was done was horrific. And poor, poor, poor Giles. It has to be one of the saddest breakups in the history of the show.

Those are the two I feel the need to mention but Willow/Tara, Willow/Oz, Anya/Xander etc also rate very highly on my list.

The most heartbreaking was Willow and Oz because the two of them still clearly love each other. They still want to be together and thats what makes it hard.

Ugh! I can't even watch Buffy and Angel's sewer scene. It makes me nauseous.

When Anya walks down the aisle alone, I feel my own heart breaking.

Willow and Oz BOTH times. When Oz left the first time I wanted to cry. When Willow picked Tara I WANTED TO CRY AGAIN. I understood Oz's reasons for why he left because his wolf side was beginning to get out of control and it was making him do stupid things but he should've stayed in contact with Willow.

But when he came back and Willow was so confused (and I believe it was because she couldn't choose who she loved/liked more (I don't think Willow loved Tara till she said it that night and up until then only liked Tara a lot) and not because she didn't know how to let Oz down) and she let him know she met someone else and she wanted to see how that went, it broke my heart. For awhile Willow wanted nothing more and it felt like she still wanted nothing more even though her and Tara were growing closer (based upon Tara's reaction to Oz's arrival) and he came back and she moved on. But the last scene where she told him she'd always be waiting to me said she still loves him and will continue to do so that way and that one day it will be THAT time again.

I gotta agree with WakingNightmare and BananaBuffy about Jenny and Giles, followed by Willow and Tara. Both of these weren't exactly break-ups, but losing your relationship because your significant other dies seems like it would be the most heart wrenching. Giles and Jenny for sure since they showed promise of a reconciliation but never really got the chance to be together. Their relationship always seemed to be interrupted by their past mistakes and the night they finally get the chance to move forward and finally be together, she is killed. So hard to watch. And with Willow and Tara, at least they got to have their night/day back together. But for Willow to watch Tara get shot and killed, man, it gets me every time.

As for regular ol' break ups, I would have to say the saddest was Willow and Oz when he first left town. They truly did love each other, but Oz knew he couldn't be with her without hurting her. He was sacrificing his own happiness to keep her safe because he loved her.
