The only thing about having younger people is that it brings up again my constant question while reading the books: why are Harry's grandparents all dead? They should only have been in their 40s or 50s when he was left orphaned. No Pop Pop or Meemaw Weasley, either. Not the point of this thread, I know, but perhaps there's a discussion to be had in that world about letting magicians perform your health care.🤔
 
The casting department really didn't realize the wrath of the Snape fangirls coming for them. That's one of the sacred cows they had to get right.

I was never a Potterhead, but nothing about this looks like it'll be in any way worthy of a redo.

Harry's parents died at 21, and Snape should have been in his 30s throughout the films.

Well, a lot of people grow up without grandparents. For Harry it is obvious they are not around, since he is an orphan, but the Elder Weasley’s could just be said to live elsewhere really and their visits weren’t focused on/maybe they didn’t want to travel when it got dangerous etc

It was a more dangerous magical world when Voldemort was around, also, possibly, a lot of grandparents are muggles and not in touch with the magical world. Hermione stops spending the holidays with her regular family way before she erases herself from their minds, after all….


Yeah, I’m still more upset about the Dumbledore casting than the Snape one. The Dumbledore one just feels bad to me, I can’t take it seriously, while the Snape one at least feels creative

I would rather see an English *woman* Dumbledore than an American Dumbledore. If he is playing English... Meh. He can play stuffy. Not sure he can play someone as multidimentional as Dumbledore
They need to cast younger people to play Harry's parents as they're going to be in the first series and then in the last, so need to try and not show them as aging, even though it'll be years in between. That'll be a difficult casting as it's only a few scenes in the whole series, but they need to keep the same people rather than recasting it each time.
 
I could see extensive use of makeup and CGI to try and cope with that.

The reason that Harry has no grandparents is that it was narratively necessary if he was to be a lonely orphan with no one but the deadly Dursleys to torment him.

It is apparent that many wizards and witches seem to live a longer than their muggle counterparts - so JK would have had no reason to not include them if it wasn't important to have Harry "all alone in the world".

Since his maternal grandparents were on record as being extremely proud of their witch daughter; it is likely they would have been delighted to raise him as a wizard. James' wizarding parents also probably would have adored and doted on their son's only child.

I could buy the idea that the grandparents were victims of the first wizarding war, but JK did not give us a reason for their absence. Could have added extra pathos!

The grandparents thing never felt odd to me as by the time I was 10 I only had 1 biological grandparent left.

I forget how lucky i am. I was without grand fathers by the time I was born, but I was around 40 when I lost my second grandmother at 95, and already an adult when my first grandmother died (not sure how old she was, but quite old).

I'm in my 60s and I still have two living aunts 88, 93, and my mum just died in September, 89 (smoked most of her life and didn't exercise). We live a long time on mum's side, and the non smokers on dad's side live pretty long too. I've an 80 year old cousin still in private practice as a physician (he's an eye surgeon).
 
I do wonder how race swapping Snape would play a role in his story sense so much of it is about racism. For the record I typically range from not giving a crap to yay representation when it comes to casting a diverse cast in a modern remake this one could actually have an impact on the story though and I wonder if they will get into it or just never mention it.

I also want to add that this the Marauder’s look awful. In the books their one saving grace was that Snape was a racist but this will make them look racist as well which for all their faults they weren’t.

Harry Potter TV series cast: All the confirmed characters revealed

Three newcomers will be taking on the iconic roles of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Wesley as they make their way into the Wizarding World.

Dominic McLaughlin has been cast as Harry Potter, however this isn't his first acting role as the child actor has previously appeared in the TV series Gifted. He is also set to star in the upcoming film Grow alongside Nick Frost and Joe Wilkinson.

Arabella Stanton also has an extensive acting background with the youngster starring as Matilda on the West End. However she will now be taking on another iconic role as Hermione Granger in the series.

Alastair Stout will play Ron Weasley in the drama, with the actor's only previous acting experience being in an advert for potato producer Albert Bartlett.

I didn't even think of where they came from! Perhaps they will train him in a more middle-English accent.
