I just watched this movie the other day. It was $5.99 in Best Buy and I decided it was worth the buy considering I always return my movies late at Blockbuster anyway.

I thought it was decent. I liked Sarah's character. It reminded me a bit of Katherine from Cruel Intentions, but that could just be her blatant use of the "F" word. I thought the dialogue was pretty realistic and the effects used to show the use of LSD weirded me out, but overall pretty decent.

**1/2

I saw this a while back and still not sure what I thought of it. Its certainly a good choice for Sarah to go for roles completely different from Buffy but there was just something I didn't like about it.

I saw Ebert (oops, sorry Cordy 😉 ) and Roper review that movie. They weren't raving the movie, but they were a little surpised at the depths "Buffy star" Sarah Michelle Gellar was capable of plumbing as an actress. They liked her.

It's always interesting when one of the Buffy actresses gets a role with some real meat on it. They just chew up the scenery with it. Have you ever seen Eliza in City by the Sea with Robert DeNiro. Like I said - chews it up.

I really liked Eliza in that. A very distinct, "real" performance. Forceful, but not hammy. You always wonder how a person's going to do when in a scene with DeNiro. Out DeNiroing DeNiro is not a wise move.

Eliza's one actress who I don't object to getting typecast. Just so damn good at the tough girl with the softie inside.

I adore Harvard Man, I ran out and bought it before seeing it because I collect Sarah movies anyways..and it was only 14.99. Heck can't go wrong!

I thought Sarah did a great job...it was a nice and dark but not too dark movie, the ending really freaked me out. I'd say a must-own if you can get it cheap for any Sarah fan....Rebecca Gayheart is in it too and she's pretty cool in the LSD trips (her eyes! LOL Freaked me out!)

$5.99 @ Best Buy...gotta love that! I bought that and BTVS Movie for $12 total :)
I really liked Harvard Man, it was an interesting role for Sarah to play. I also noticed the similarities between Sarah's characters in this movie and Cruel Intentions. Besides the frequent swearing, both characters were rich girls who manipulated people to get what they want, and liked sex. 😉

It's really a very interesting movie, I liked Sarah in it and I enjoyed watching the movie mostly because of the weirdness, but just like Faith said there's just something about it that I didn't like too..

I don't really like the movie... it seems like a jumbled up mess. I do like Sarah and her acting in it. It was even going past her role as Katherine on Cruel Intentions. She did drop the f*bomb quite frequently in that movie. It is always interesting to see a different side of favorite actors/actresses. She's shown us that twice... in Harvard Man and Cruel Intentions.

Its a great movie. i bought it before watching it cause SMG is my favorite actress, so i must own all her movies! 🙂

her character did remind me of Catherine from Cruel Intentions also.

I got this movie used at BB also, I also collect everything with SMG in it that I can find. I think this movie had more potential. I think a better leading man would have definitely been a step in the right direction.

I think 'Harvard Man' is the best film Sarah has made to date, although it is not necessarily my favourite. I do have to say I'm a big fan of writer/director James Toback and this film holds added interest for me because it's one of his most overtly autobiographical works.

The actual plot is outrageously far-fetched, but it doesn't purport to be anything else and is filmed with all the usual Toback trademarks: eccentric editing, split-screen multi-scenes, uneven pacing, sketchy characterisation, weird story structuring and bizarre dialogue centred around philosophical discourse.

It's what happens after the plot has been established that is really surreal, as the film begins to concentrate on Alan's acid trip (the lead character based on Toback). Everything is strange and fragmented, intended to heighten and emphasise Alan's descent into drug-induced temporary insanity.

Toback has deliberately cast the film with several actors who are seemingly unsuited to their roles, provides them with idiosyncratic personality traits and places them in entirely implausible scenarios. For instance, Joey Lauren Adams is not the first person you might think of to play a philosophy lecturer at Harvard University and Sarah Michelle Gellar doesn't immediately come to mind as perfect casting for the daughter of a Mafia boss. To emphasise this even more, Toback cast Gianni Russo, who appeared in the first two "˜Godfather' films, as her father. Eric Stoltz and Rebecca Gayheart are the most unlikely FBI agents this side of David Duchovny's character in "˜Twin Peaks' and the jittery Adrian Grenier doesn't exactly have an obvious physique for a star basketball player, even at college level.

Many film critics were hostile towards the film and pointed to the casting as evidence that Toback is a hopeless and wilful incompetent. Others applauded him for the bravery of his casting, observing that it worked to the advantage of the film because it confounds the expectations of the audience and is suited to the surreal and improbable scenario into which the characters had been placed. For myself, I think it was a stroke of genius and all the actors rise to the occasion.

I think "˜Harvard Man' is genuinely a quite brilliant film, although I fully appreciate that it would not be to all tastes. I've watched it on half-a-dozen occasions and I continue to come away impressed every time.

Wish I'd said that. :)
I bought this movie months ago but I only saw like half an hour of it then I turned it off. I have to see it though. It's the only one of my DVDs I haven't seen.

I didn't think it was a particularly good movie, but it was interesting to see Sarah in a different role, and she did her part very good!
