Has anyone been to York?

I've not actually been myself, but by all accounts York is gorgeous and well worth a visit. It's not as overly touristy as other places in the UK. I've been thinking of going up there for some time. If you avoid weekends, you'll definitely find it quieter.

Would you just be going to York, or would you go elsewhere in the UK too?
 
My brother went to university there so I visited quite a lot many years ago.

I'd say its worth a visit, its a very picturesque place to go. It's quite historical and also a bit student-y as places go.
There's a famous museum (about the Vikings that founded the city etc,), you can go on a walk of the original wall to the city and there are quite a few places that are pedestrian-centrist areas; places to shop and so forth.

It's certainly popular for day trips out but its not overly crowded.
 
It's a lovely city, lots of history with a Cathedral and a city wall. It's also great for a night out too with lots of great pubs and places to eat. I'd definitely say it's good for a weekend visit, though a week might be too long.
 
Yes, a good weekend city break for sure. I've taken my daughter up for a day trip to shop around Christmas time for years. The medieval buildings with Christmas lights and traditional festive additions like street vendors selling roasted chestnut braziers or mulled wine just gives the (already beautiful) city such a great atmosphere. And Betty's teashop is sooo quaint, a must for a traditional English afternoon tea. 😀
 
Never been myself, but have a friend who went to Uni there and have heard nothing but good things.
 
I have been there several times, the countryside around York is beautiful, York is one of those places well worth a visit. There is a section of a street that is kept as it was a hundred years ago, it has the original gas lights, original cobblestones and the whole street is frequently in films.
Also is the cathedral, a famous landmark in its own right. Have a look on the internet to plan your visit and get your video camera serviced before you go.
Admittedly I don't know how touristy it is as I was last there 30 years ago.

Well the real trip I'm thinking of is Edinburgh and Stirling. But I'd like to see where my family is from in Tyne & Wear, so I thought I would drive down the coast and hit up Bamburgh and Holy Island on the way. But I was thinking of going a little further to aee Whitby Abbey and then cut over to York for a couple days before heading back up to Edinburgh.

Not sure if it's worth the time in the car, but I'm not sure there will be another trip it will fit into. And then I can see a little of the Dales and the border country on the way back. Also considering hitting Durham on the way down and Barnard Castle on the way back. Early days of planning though.

Whitby is a great place, beautiful coast line. My friends got married there. They have Goth weekends in Whitby, in April and November I think, to celebrate Dracula landing there from Transylvania. (My friends didn't get married at the Goth weekend, though that would have been fun)
 
We've been to York a few times and we're off again in a couple of weeks on a short break with daughter and son-in-law. The National Railway Museum is excellent if you like trains (plus it's free) - I could easily spend all day there. York Minster is a great old church building and there are many lovely pubs and shops in the city centre. The Jorvik Centre (Viking museum mentioned by thetopher above) is currently closed but re-opens next year. BTW if you make it down as far as the South Bank of the River Humber, there's an open invitation to Pointy Towers. Just let me know in advance so we can air the guest wing 😉
