Has anyone else thought of this

OKay, this has always bothered me. So Buffy died at the end of season 5 everyone knows this. She was dead for at least a summer before she was resurrected. Why wasn't there another slayer chosen?!! It makes no sense, she died for a minute and Kendra is called. Some may say that it was because Buffy's death was cancelled because Faith was the newest slayer, but when they thought Dawn was a potential they kept saying if Buffy died then Dawn could be chosen? I am sure that this has been brought up before, but if not, any thoughts?

It has. 🙂 I'll see what I can do about digging up some of the old threads for you. They may be so old that they're locked, in which case it's always good to bring the discussion back up occasionally.

Here's one:

The Gift - Buffy-Boards

Very basic response.

Buffy died in season 1 which meant the line left her.
When she died in season 5 the line was in Faith.

When Willow resurrected Buffy in season 6 however, she restored the Slayer line back in Buffy which meant that if she died then, another Slayer would have been called.

ahh, that makes sense. I really think that it was just a writing problem. But it is still fun to think out.

But why wasn't the line restored when Xander gave Buffy CPR in S1 and brought her back to life?

I know this has been discussed elsewhere, though, so maybe we should leave it there.

How do you know Willow brought the Slayer line back into Buffy? Was it some part of the spell?

well i thought it was a case of buffy died in season one which called kendra and kendra died which called faith. As buffy shouldnt ahve technically came back to life she would ahve still been classed as dead in teh slayer line, therefore making no difference when she died the second time.

I've never heard the theory before that Willow put the slayer line back through Buffy when she resurrected her...interesting...

I never bought into the Slayer line running only through Faith, even though Joss said so. Like I said in some older thread:

Potential + Line Energy = Slayer equals Slayer - Line Energy = Potential

so, if Buffy comes around from CPR still being a Slayer and not just a Potential, the line quite obviously still runs through her, meaning that post-Prophecy girl, if Chosen had not happened, it would forever have been the Chosen Two in every generation, one of the Slayer lines running through Buffy, one trough Kendra (and later Faith). And yes, that means until I am proven otherwise in-canon, I say a new Slayer was called after "The Gift" even if we never saw her on screen. *stubborn face*

Makes me wonder how long the line energy takes to decide to abandon the corpse of a Slayer... It does abandon it at some point (or S7 makes no sense at all), but it does not abandon it immediately at clinical death (PG, Villains), even though the new calling happens right at that point (PG => Kendra). So it seems we're stuck with "more than a few minutes, less than a few months".

i thought there would only have been a new slayer if faith had died? well thats what i understood anyway, cuz buffy died. kendra got called. kendra died and faith got called. even though buffy was bought back and what not but thats what it would have seemed to be anyway, and in season 3 when she tells joyce that you only get a new slayer is when the other dies, so surely that would fit into the whole " faith's death activates new slayer" thing???

Yeh I always thought that Faith has to be dead for another slayer to be called but thats not a problem now eh !

I always accepted it to mean that since Faith was called when Kendra was killed, until Faith died no more slayers would be called. Since, by the universe's standards, Buffy was already dead and people aren't supposed to die more than once, it didn't matter that she died again 'cause Faith was still there.

I got a question and I'm talking way out of turn here and not knowing much (and this is different from anything else how?)...........

I have not saw season 6 & 7 yet, but from some of the chatter and spoilers I've heard, Spike overpowers his chip and can hurt Buffy because she has 'risen' from the dead and not technically human anymore? If that is all that it takes to be concidered 'undead', then why could he not bite her in season 5 when he thinks he gets the chip out?

My guess is that he doesn't know what xander did at the end of season one when he brought her back to life, so its more important concerning chip protical that he thinks she's human than her actual state of being.

So what is it viewed as...being human I guess...when you've been brought back by magic or CPR?

I guess my big questions is why does it matter how many times Buffy dies for the slayer line to flow through her? She died once and lost it? She died again and got it back? Does it work like a switch on/off with reanimation being the finger that flicks it?

Now that you all are very confused in trying to figure out what I am trying to say, because I'm not sure exactly how to ask it.... I vanish like ninja.

Onward for Sheogorath! :bite-cha:

Again, my take on this was that it had to do with something in Willow's spell, not the fact that she actually died and then came back. The first time Buffy died and Xander brought her back, he did so naturally. The second time she was brought back using supernatural forces so that's always how I viewed that and why Spike could hurt her in S6 but not in S5.

hey, thanks for explaining it to me, between you and IM I think i have a better grasp on whats going on with the line now...

The difference between the two coming-back-from-the-dead scenarios is that in PG, Buffy had just been clinically dead for a few minutes, but her body was still intact and viable, just needed to be resuscitated (sp?).
After The Gift, her body had rotted and decomposed. Willow's spell actually created, in effect, a totally new body for Buffy, just using her corpse as raw material. IIRC, the ("rubber-scientific") explanation for Spike being able to hit post-Gift Buffy was that the minuscule molecular differences between a magic-created body and a normal, biologically grown one were sufficient to fool the chip into not registering Buffy as human anymore. (That's gotta be one damn interesting piece of silicon. Its scanning mechanisms can obviously rival Trek's tricorders. :lmao: )

Thanks for explaining that, I think I'm on to something now....look out!
The problem with the theory about the line only running through Faith since Buffy died is that they repeatedly talking about a new slayer being called if buffy were to die in season 7. Overall it was obviously a writing flaw, but again its fun to think about.

Like BasBritt and Insane mystic were suggesting...maybe when Buffy is reborn into her new body with her old soul, the line comes back as well?

She lost the line when she died and by CPR came back...with the resurection spell its alot more than that. It would be easire to except this if it took a more 'Supernatural' television show bend and buffy no longer has her angry puppy neck scar. On the Supernatural television show dean get reanimated as well, but has no scars that he use to or broken bones.

Maybe reanimating buffy in such a way brough not only her super strength and slyer abilities back, but her ability to pass the line along as well. If that was the case, those sayings in season 7 wouldn't be writers oversight.

I'm not saying this is correct, I know very little about season 6 & 7.

My theory about Buffy being reinserted into the Slayer is it is the result of Willow's spell to resurrect her.

Not only did Willow have to resurrect Buffy's body, essentially creating her a new one, but she also had to resurrect The Slayer part of Buffy. So if she had to create a new body, maybe she had to create a new Slayer. Which would have insterted Buffy back into the Slayer line.

But I'm not convinced that the gang would have known this, so Buffy telling the girls that her death would activate one of them was possibly just her trying to scare the girls into doing their best.

I've always thought the reason why another slayer wasnt called
was becuase in season 6 ep "Barganing part 1" Giles says
"We just can't have her messing up
in front of the wrong person -- or
the wrong thing. We need the world
and the underworld -- to believe
Buffy is alive and well."
sooo they are using the buffy bot as kinda a decoy to stop them
thinking Buffy is dead, becuase she wasn't killed naturaly.
