Hate and Ignorance on Youtube.com

If you can't say certain things...then you can't really express your feelings exactly how you want.

If you can't say certain things...then you can't really express your feelings exactly how you want.

are you having trouble expressing your feelings right now?

Hopefully my point isn't lost on all. Expressing your feelings isn't the problem...racism and abuse are. Under the current youtube system, once a comment is voted minus enough, it is blocked out.... this is the exact same thing I am talking about only with less control.

If people cant be decent, or show even an ounce of respect, then I couldnt give a damn about them expressing their feelings, their feelings are worthless to me and 90% of the other youtube users. Its only good business in the end.

You may not be able to express your feelings how you want but you can still express your feelings. Respecting other people really isnt that hard.

Edit:

Which is pretty much what Silum said - only he said it better. 🙂

if its as simple as removing all swearing/racism etc than thats fine. But i can guarantee that it wont stop there. Stuff will get removed or edited or deleted when sometimes they are just saying their feelings and probably arent even in the wrong.

Its a fair enough idea but it just can't work on a site like youtube.

Not being able to say certain words even if they are hateful doesn't allow you to give the feeling and emotion behind your opinion.
I mean seriously guys, it's YOUTUBE!! who really cares...the comments are moved down the list in like a day anyways and you can't
see them unless you like go through like pages of them. 😵

Well, I'm more concerned about the racist/sexist/entirely inappropriate comments than ones with strong language. That should allow you enough room to make a point about a video with passion. And if you have to post racist comments over a four minute clip of The Cosby Show, then I don't really care about your feelings or emotions.

Oh, trust me. I have plenty of bigger things to worry about. We're just on this subject right now.

Exactly!!! Its YOUTUBE! Why then, are you arguing for equality and freedom of speech for a site like YOUTUBE!!??

Im not arguing for equality or freedom of speech im just saying it's only a site just who cares if people say stupid crap...
Hahaha! I'm one of the hatas a lot of the times. I'm glad there's no "mods", people can actually right how they feel.

Whereas on a moderated board we have to wrong our feelings? There are several ways to express opinions and feelings without stomping on other people.

H
Harm
its just if you say how you feel on this board people start to not like you including mods, trust me.
Harm agrees: Im not arguing for equality or freedom of speech im just saying it's only a site just who cares if people say stupid crap...

Because 10 year old kids view the site. Your right I suppose, your not arguing for equality, but you are arguing for freedom of speech at the same time as saying its 'only youtube'... cant have it both ways.

Harm agrees: its just if you say how you feel on this board people start to not like you including mods, trust me.

Its the playground effect.... you are perfectly allowed to have freedom to say whatever you like...but your gonna get your ass kicked if you say the wrong thing.... the same as you would get in real life, in any country. The internet fills this void where people can be as despicable as they want to each other, and when you have a site like youtube that is precisely what you get. It isn't freedom of speech you are witnessing on youtube (look here for that, this is a relatively well managed board that provides just that), on youtube you're witnessing childish thoughts, and morons without repercussions. I feel very sorry for you if, as you say, you make up that group.

If you really think that having 14 year olds bicker over which race deserves to be killed on mass, how hitler was a genious, or n***ers deserved to burned at the stake is 'freedom of speech', well then you have no idea where the roots of such a phrase lie.

Youtube needs moderation.

Harm
10 year old kids shouldn't be on the internet alone. not everything has to be all moderated and taken control of. youtube is smart...they dont want to loose members.
Why would moderators not allow people to express their feelings? You can write feelings without being racist, sexist, etc. People who just spout their feelings without tact are looked at as ignorant and they will just be ignored.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

There seems to be some sort of YouTube culture where the point is to go around all the vids you don't like just to be nasty. Call me crazy but if I'm not into a given band or television show then I'm not really gonna be wanting to go around looking at YouTube vids that feature them just so I can be bitchy. I've actually got a life.

Harm, I noticed you as soon as I entered these boards. And believe me, if I thought that comments like those you wrote a lot of around then could be rectified by answering in an equally violent manner I would have flamed you, roasted you and served you to my dorm mates as canapees. The thing is: I don't. In my experience, there are interesting stories behind why most people think what they think, and do what they do. Listening to those stories is far more rewarding than to point blank condemn their actions and world views.

My husband said to me the second or third time we met, late at night (or early morning) when we were both drunk students at party: "Sometimes it's better to be kind than to be right." There is a time for everything. A time to be bitchy, a time to be kind. There's never a time for being disrespectful, though.

Here endeth the lesson.

Great advice!
I often stay away from the comments of youtube.

It was a comment saying that the chick in the video in question should get gang(or ass) raped that scared me away.

'cept for when the curiousity lures me in. And then I', scared away again.

But I don't think it's possible to have mods on there, too many comments. To moderate the comments, they would need hundreds of mods, and then who would mod the mods so they don't misuse their power?

I'm too Canadian to respond to most threads on YouTube.

I think there is a joke in here, but I'm to Swedish to see it. 😉

Silum agrees: rep (+/-) comments and a heirarcy of mods would keep mods in check. If you dont understand how it works, go visit a 'mega forum' for a day. Youtube's comments PALE in comparison to the number of posts these get.

Really? There's sites with bigger activity than youtube?

That's scary.

Hoorah. I'm too Norwegian, so that makes two of us.
Youtube obviously get massive internet hits, but as a 'forum' if you consider it one, it isn't so big. The amount of comments on youtube is tiny in comparison to user hits for example. Sure, if you compare it to a small board I can understand people thinking its too big a task to moderate, but thats not how moderation works. A site could mathematically be infinite if the proper systems are in place for moderation. This site for example, were it to grow expoentially, well then the various tiers (and indeed number of tiers) of mods would grow to fasilitate its growth.

The biggest forum on the internet has more than 18 million members, and over 1 billion, 500 million posts. Far exceeding youtubes comments.

I think you're left digging yourself out of a hole in which you want to continue to make 'retarded comments on youtube' yet you innately realise they dont have their place in the same way we all do. A 10 year old kid who looks with their parents at... lets say for your sake a Meriah Kerry clip is confronted with "F&%K BLACK PEOPLE!" in big writting directly below the video. I dont think for one second you have thought this through.

Also, you do realise they are losing people because of this very issue? And the steps that need to be taken to combat it would actually make sense business wise? Still you havn't really answered any of the objections I have raised beyond the first sentence of my posts. I dont expect you to, since I think the average person making these comments on youtube isn't rational enough to describe why they do so.

Meriah Kerry? REALLY?
I get what you are saying. Racism makes me sick. I have to deal with it on a daily basis because I live in a mostly-white area, and my little cousin being biracial. I just think that it's only youtube, who cares what people say!

P.S. I like your Carah Mushell Gellur banner.

Mariah Carey....ok, a misspelling? Interestingly your post with reference to my banner gives me PERFECT understanding into how you treat others on youtube when you are not held back. In fact I now understand why you want to say what ever you damn well please on a site like youtube... maturity is a wonderful thing.

As for its 'only youtube'... its the most visited video internet site on the planet!? why ' it's only youtube'? Never have I been more confused with such an argument...seriously. Do you want to argue that youtube is irrelevent? Surely not? Otherwise you wouldn't be arguing so fervently that we should be 'free to speak our mind'. You are terribly inconsistent and it comes off as a silly discussion. Youtube is 'ONLY YOUTUBE' yet your so fervent against any moderation of its comment system! I just think you want to speak your mind with whatever filth you want...and I am posing that we are better than that.

Whereas now, you get ..? Fill me in, please. Because from my point of view, it seems to me that you're not getting a lot out of your current way of acting, either. At least I get the satisfaction of learning to sort out what my arguments are worth, what's just my gut feeling and when I've been flat out wrong. That, to me, is worth rather a lot. Growth is good.

So either way I get nothing...so why be nice when you can be mean!
Lol, typing this little problem into Google does yield some pretty funny responses!

Reading YouTube comments is like reading the text messages between a 13-year-old girl and a klansman.

Nowhere is it more evident the average citizen cannot handle the responsibility of an open forum.

YouTube's core offering is great. It enables anybody to post and share videos ranging from humorous to inspiring. You can literally spend a lifetime sifting through entertaining videos.
With roughly 80 million videos and 3 billion video views, YouTube currently eats up more bandwidth than the entire internet in 2000.

With the masses comes idiocy, and intellects such as myself are subjected to the immaterial ramblings of teenyboppers and the offensive condemnations of racists.

The typical comment thread for a YouTube video starts innocently enough. Say we're checking out something as harmless as a sneezing panda (20 million people have).

The comments start like this"¦
surferchick12: LMAO! the mom is like WTF!!!!!!!!111
xXxPokemonxXx: awww look at the baby panda ROFL 😉 hahaha LOL
TonyBDaMan: 8===D

It then turns political"¦
GreenGi2l02: whats so funny about animals in captivity??
Dave-O: Stupid liberals always trying to free lame animals. Eat pandas.

Then a couple off-topic notes"¦
dancefreak66: The Peruvian government cuts down 1,300 acres of forest every day. Click here to stop them.
lovematenow: You have a secret crush! Paste this message into 8 other comment sections to learn who loves you!

And then it turns ugly"¦
the_answer3: 9/11 was great day ever. Americans burn with Bush's actions. Your imperialism will be your end.
Eagleface: shut up you brit. you all have small pen1s and you know it!
ShaFeLeR00: Hang minorities.

YouTube tried fixing this by adding a voting system similar to Digg's, but this only put a band aid on the problem. Google, who now owns YouTube, does a decent job filtering spam on its other platforms but not with YouTube.
You know its bad when programmers have to create scripts to hide the comments. We're dealing with a larger issue of global idiocy and censoring some comments is only a start.
Only a masochist gets pleasure out of reading these things. But in a way, it's like watching two morbidly obese women wrestle in a pool of baby oil"”a horrendous sight, yet you just can't look away."

Me...and millions of other humans.

I think you just get offended waaaaaaay to easily. I don't believe for a second that you accidentally misspelled that.

But it IS only youtube. Everyone on this site seems to forget that this is only the INTERNET. Youtube in perspective is irrelevant. It's just online! Its not real! It's not even real life....It's just numbers and letters, so why does it really matter what people think or write? Like really, people will be racist and rude either way. Not everything has to be all moderated and watched over.

Plus, if its really that big of an issue to you then why don't you like write a letter TO youtube or something and not complain on some random website that they will never see. Complaining isn't very mature, now is it?!
