Have there been instances where you just hated your favorite characters?

Like everyone else, a lot of the scenes I hated were the ones such as "Empty Places" or the rape scene in "Seeing Red", but those aren't exactly my favorite character, so it was most of me being disappointed in the character in general. As for my favorite characters:

Tara-nope, can't think of any time where I hated her

Faith-Again, can't really think of a time where she made me mad. The point of her character was that she was the good girl turned evil by bad circumstances. In fact, Faith's storyline made me be mad at the gang a little bit. If they had been more supportive, Faith probably wouldn't have turned to the mayor.

Giles-Him trying to kill Spike made me a bit mad, but I think it was just bad writing to be honest, it did feel very out of character. I was more disappointed when he left Buffy in s6 at the hardest time possible. He could have let her grow up without moving to another continent you know!

Jenny-Again, she never really made me angry, I just wish we would have seen more of her.

Buffy-I pretty much enjoyed every decisions she made, whether they were bad or good, I though they were interesting enough for me not to "hate" one of her decisions

I would do the Angel's character too but it's been too long since I've seen the serie, so my memories are too fuzzy to answer the question.

- I have to agree with this definitely out of character, we've seen that Giles isn't a perfect good guy, for example when he kills Ben but this felt...off just not Giles.

- While it's true I have never hated Buffy It's hard to believe you enjoy everything decision she has made I mean there were definitely times when I couldn't help but think what a b...annoying scoundrel, maybe it never got to hate because she has never been my favourite character, my favourites seem to change every now and then from Xander to Anya, to Spike, to Fred, to Tara, to Giles, to Doyle, definitely love Doyle, hated when he died but was one of my favourite episodes so I guess I can't complain, anyway, round and round different favourites all the time but strangely enough Buffy never became one of my favourites which is why I think it never got to hate because you can't really hate someone you don't have strong feelings for them one way or another.

anyway, better stop before I continue rambling on.

Yeah, I have trouble coming up situations where I hated Faith as well, which is why I didn't post on this thread yet. I'm not entirely sure that I'd put the blame on everyone else, though - with Faith, I feel like there was so much blame going around that you can't really put it on any one character and therefore I find it hard to really blame or hate anyone for how they handled it.

It's not as much as I enjoy every decision she makes, I should have been clearer on my first post haha. It's more that I find her character so interesting, just like you, she was never one of my favorite...until recently. While at times she is a complete a-hole, I find the way her decision making works fascinating. On my most recent rewatch, I found myself enjoying her character much much more then previously, which makes me enjoy her decisions. Maybe I overthink what the writers meant to say with some of her actions, but analysing her character is quite enjoyable, which is why I don't mind that she sometimes was a complete b***h. I guess now I'm more objective as oppose to when I first saw the show. Now when she makes a poor decision, instead of being like f you Buffy, I'm like dam the way she thinks is pretty interesting.

Mischlings, I agree 🙂 you brought up a really good point, the whole situation Faith had to go through, and the way she was brought up complicated things a lot. If it was let's say Xander that would have killed a man and gone rogue it would have been a complete different situation and I would have been really mad at the gang for letting him go this far, but with Faith it is a touchier subject. I guess I was most mad about the role the council took with her. I still think the gang could have done more for her though! But I guess that also comes from me being a Fuffy shipper...and well seeing my ship sink lol

Your right about seeing it in a different way after rewatching it at different points in your life and not just different ages, although that obviously makes a difference...Okay, this is pretty embarrassing but since I was about 10 I guess i can forgive it, when I first watched Buffy I actually had a crush on Dawn and obviously watching it now in my 20s not even the slightest crush..well I guess it would be creepy if I did, anyway gone slightly off topic what i was saying is while age plays a factor the most important element is the different experiences you have had. depending on what your going through or what you have experienced in the past you will relate differently to the various aspects of the different situations shown, for example the first time you watched it you might have hated Oz for leaving Willow so suddenly without even trying to fix things but after rewatching it after you have experienced new things you might believe that Oz was doing the right thing by leaving and so on and so forth constantly changing how you feel about different characters, relationships and situations and this show is definitely rewatchable, infact it has great rewatchability, I feel like I have rambled on a bit but hopefully I made some sense.

Couldn't agree more! Things have changed so much in the 10 years I've been a fan of Buffy that watching the show again, I see it in a whole new light. I found myself being a lot more sensitive to some of the things portrayed in Buffy and understanding things way differently this time around. I find myself liking different characters and disliking some of the characters I had previously liked.

Anyway I'm going way off topic lol We should probably bring this to a new topic if it's worth discussing further 🙂

Connor when he kills the innocent girl for Evil!Cordy. Everything else that Connor does, I can accept and I can understand the reasons why he did what he did - even when he sleeps with Cordelia. But that moment, when he takes the life of an innocent person, when he already knows that Cordelia is bad news. I hated him in that second.

Not condoning it, but I can understand why Connor killed the innocent girl (it was reluctant at least), his whole raison d'etre is to have some sort of family unit which he never had growing up. As far as he was concerned, killing the girl would contribute to the baby's birth and the development of his family with Cordy.

I find it even harder to sympathize with Connor considering Kartheiser openly hates the franchise... In the newer books, Connor becomes much more relatable though
I dont remember if I have commented on this thread before but when Angel dumps Buffy and ultimately leaves in season 3, although I understand his reasons and intentions completely, kinda made me hate him a bit. I suppose though I should hate the writers for giving us a back up character that would develop so much that he would need his own show and we would, at least for a time, lose our favorite couple in the process 🙁

Spike- the rape/attempted rape. I mean come on, William.

Xander- be a man. Don't dump a woman who's wearing her wedding dress. Have guts!

Buffy is 1A. That being said, I despised her supposedly sending Andrew in Angel S5, and Andrew's speech to Angel and Spike about her motivations. So much so that I just kind of fan-canon that they came from Giles, because coming from Buffy they make zero sense.

At least with that one, BS8 explains a lot of it away. Buffy had gone a bit power-mad, and there's a good chance Andrew was just blatantly lying--considering BS8 shows Andrew was entirely blatantly lying to Angel & Spike in TGIQ. The hierarchy early into BS8 showed that Giles & Xander seemed to be the ones mostly commanding the smaller operations like the ones where Andrew appeared in AS5.

Personally, I think that decision made more sense than later on when Angel speaks to Giles directly saying, "Willow's friend Fred is dying from a demonic parasite who will likely takeover Los Angeles after it gestates," and Giles responding "Willow's kind of busy, and we don't trust you guys, so you're on your own. Good luck with that apocalypse, and the death of yours and Willow's pal."

Willow irritated the hell out of me in season 4. Hard to explain it, but the way she (the character) acted was just extremely annoying. Like her "persona" was too over the top or something. Like she tried to add a new element to her personality.

Yes, and this after the big emotional moment in season 5 where Buffy says she needs him back as her watcher, and him so happy about that.

-- bad writing.

Only one i ever was a little bit disappointed with was Cordy for never visiting Wesley or caring about how he was in season 3 of Angel

Hate it's a strong word, I would say more "less happy moments of your favorite character"

Angel: In "Deep Down" when he sends Connor away from his house. I understand that he was angry with him, and he had every reason to be, but the line "I love you, Connor. Now get out of my house" made me very sad. Come on, Angel, Connor was manipulated by Holtz/Justine (and you know it) Out there, moreover, there is W&H that wants to do experiments on comparative anatomy on Connor, and you send him away, knowing that your son has no home, no job and knowing that "The world it's harsh, and cruel.." ? The behavior of Angel invalidate the line "It does not matter where we come from, what we've done or Suffered.." Forgiveness. That's what I would have expected from Angel. To me, the behavior of Angel was OOC.

Buffy: In "Get it done" She had no right to speak in that way of Chloe, and I wondered what had happened to "my Buffy." Well, for me, Buffy died in "The Gift" and her has never returned. Despite all this, I continued to love her, but the line "Chloe was an idiot" it's something that I wouldn't have wanted to hear from her. I understand the message inherent in that scene, it was necessary to discourage suicide, but once again the writers have failed in its execution. Not for a moment there was talk of Chloe pain, and weakness has been labeled as stupidity. Message horrible. Also in "Home" (Ats 4x22) refers to suicide, but the desperation of suicidal aspiring it's well highlighted, and his pain is treated with respect.

Connor: In "Inside Out" For not believing Darla. He would have had to listen his heart, as he had suggested Darla. I understand your pain, but I would have liked, at that time, he had followed his instincts and not the empty promises of "Cordelia." Connor disappointed me there, I thought he was much stronger than that. Needless to say I hated very much Cordelia, but she isn't certainly among my favorite characters.

Wesley: for kidnapping Connor, and for believing more in what he read in books, rather than to his best friend. Angel would never kill Connor, and Wesley had to talk to him anyway, before do what he did. The fact that he also struck Lorne, does not help at all. I'll never forgive Wesley for that.
