Variant cover for Issue 8
BUFFYS9+%25238+VARIANT+FC+SOL+copy.jpg

Scott Allie said,

"People are gonna assume this is a prank or a fake cover, but it's not. She really does get her arm torn off by a zompire in the middle of a big battle involving Spike and Dowling. It's not a dream, unlike much of the action in Buffy #5. Why show it on the cover? It gets to be a drag saving all the juiciest stuff for the insides, and we think that it'll still have some surprise impact when it happens."

That picture fears the crap out of every Buffy fan!
Yup, Moscow Watcher just posted about this in the S9 news thread. I'm not sure what to think or say about it other than 😱

I bet someone will get her and her arm to a hospital quick enough for them to surgically reattach it. Factor in her slaying healing powers and with a couple physical therapy sessions her arm will be good as new. Or maybe someone will make her a special robo-arm; which could be awesome. 😛

I was just thinking the same thing. That, or we find out that regeneration is a part of Slayer healing power. No way is Buffy gonna stay the One Armed Slayer.

The robot arm would be a bit Star Wars, hope that doesn't happen

I was thinking that. Either that or something related to magic.
Good thing it's Buffyverse, where dead people come alive and arms are magically reattached 😀

True, although the current no magic situation will probably make it extra dramatic.
Buffy will get her arm back... And if she doesn't?? I'm kinda done with the whole comics thing. How can a Slayer be a good Slayer with 1 arm?

you promise?
But would that work? Doesn't it keep regenerating?

At the minute it does, but all the recent specs for the upcoming issues point to both Buffy and Angel making inroads to bring magic back. My theory is that they will get magic back, separately or between them, and Angel will have to decided whether to bring Giles back or regenerate Buffy's arm. Buffy's need will win out, no question.

It ties the stories together nicely. Maybe Xander will even get his eye regenerated?

Buffy's arm won't be gone permanently, but I think it will be gone long enough for it to have a real affect on her, and her life.

Ahh, ok. That sounds like it could end up being a pretty interesting story.
Personally, I love where this is going. Losing her arm would be a really realistic thing to happen to Buffy, considering how dangerous being the Slayer is, and how she is only human, really. Think about it - how hasn't this happened already? She's died, been shot....but the affect that if only temporarily, losing an arm would have on Buffy would be VERY interesting. I like Kean's theory that Angel would have to choose between bringing Giles back or giving her back her arm...interesting stuff. I guess we'll see what happens! I'd love to see Xander get his eye back, too.

I don't think the magic will be brought back within the next three issues - that would be too quick. Maybe they'll find some tricky way to circumvent the rules, though.

In any case, it happens in April and Buffy is okay on May cover; she holds her stake in her left hand, but her right hand is functional, too.

Andrew making an artifical arm in issue 3 could hardly be a coincidence, methinks.

Where's the May cover? And I agree about Andrew. Actually, are we even sure this is Buffy and not a Buffybot or a decoy?

Here's a thought from completely out of left field. Spike's bug crew has the technology to reattach Buffy's own arm or to clone her a new one or make her a bionic arm like the old Six Million Dollar Man. They could even make her an arm that shoots wooden stakes like Spiderman's web.

You know, it's funny that Allie says "She really does get her arm torn off by a zompire in the middle of a big battle involving Spike and Dowling". She, not Buffy. He never mentions Buffy's name. It would be a very cheap trick if it's a bot or somebody who happens to look like Buffy but I wouldn't put it past the powers that be to do that.

Reattaching the arm in the next issue is far more likely, though. Of course, this makes the whole thing pointless...

It's a cover for Free Comics Day

The solicitation reads: "Buffy has never needed a vacation as badly as she does now, with the world overrun with zompires and other fallout from Season 8. After an old friend suggests a relaxing getaway from all things that go bump in the night, it turns out to be harder than she could ever expect for a Slayer to get a day off!"

So I think it's safe to assume that the cover features real Buffy.
